I really enjoyed this book. I felt like I was there and I really didn't want my stay to end. I would set the book down and reflect. I found myself going to YouTube to tour the city so I even felt more like I was there. When reading about the music I listened to it and meditated in the sun of my backyard. Enjoyed the book so much got a copy of Honey and Dust, another book by Piers. And I find myself taking a slow trip along with him, not wanting it to end to soon. If you love to travel vicariously, this is a great read for you.

As fascinating, colorful and moving as India itself. I loved the author's respectful tone; he does not demean what he doesn't understand, but tries to, and succeeds, in illuminating it for those of us who have never been to this country of staggering contrasts.

I was surprised to love this book so much! The prose is eloquent, thoughtful, but not in a self-indulgent way. I've never been to Varanasi but feel that this was an awesome way to understand the city before I get there myself.

Piers Moore Ede is very happy with his chance to live in Varanasi for a year. He fell in love with India on earlier visits and he's excited to live there. For a year he explores the city. He meets with business owners, observes local customs and discovers many things about Varanasi and India. He makes new friends and almost every day he learns something interesting. Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. Piers Moore Ede tries to find out what makes this city and its inhabitants so special.Kaleidoscope City is a very well written report of Piers Moore Ede's year in Varanasi. He's met so many interesting people and writes about their encounters. Not all of these meetings are with men and women who have something happy and positive to tell. Even though the lives of some of these people are hard and sometimes miserable they aren't afraid, because they know that death will mean they're ready for something better.I loved the chapter about the Ganga. The river is so important and it's suffering, because it's polluted. Some people are very worried about that, but so far their battles haven't had much result. Piers Moore Ede talks about it with both the highly educated who are working from an office and those who use the river itself and whatever it has to offer as their main source of income. That's something I like about this book. It's mainly observational and because of the conversations the author has with a great variety of people the reader gets to see many different points of view. Another chapter I loved was the one about the weavers of India's beautiful intricate fabrics. Modern times are making it difficult for some of the weavers to keep earning money, but for others it's a golden opportunity.Kaleidoscope City is a perfect read for those who like travel stories and who want to know more about India. Because the author stayed there for a year he had the time to get to know Varanasi quite well. I think the report is beautiful and honest and it's certainly interesting. I learned a lot from it and think it's a fascinating read.

Enraptured by the teeming spectacle of life in India, but most especially by the city of Veranasi located on the banks of the worshipped Ganga river, the author records his impressions and images from his year’s immersion in its culture. Overwhelmed by the sights, smells, sounds, colors, actions and diversity of the multitudes of residents, Piers Moore Ede tackles different aspects of the pulsating region which is home to Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. Interviewing residents, he delves into their histories, the place of the caste system, the holy role of the Ganges, the rites of cremation, sex and the city, technology versus ancient crafts, and the daunting problems of uncontrolled bureaucracy and corruption. Exchanges between locals and professionals disclose the problems inherent in the sewage accumulation of the Ganges with the lack of any corrective infrastructure. The pervasiveness of rodents among the sweets and the enticing aromas of street food. The slow erosion of native crafts with the loss of possible earnings for the artisans by the invasive imitative technology. Captured here are the eclectic characteristics, personalities, rituals, and practices of an ancient city that worships both death and life and its manifold flaws along with the magic that sustains it.

"WOW! This is some Tour de Force! In its scope and detailed content this looks like the book I never wrote. I absolutely applaud the concept of the book and the effort put into it. Golf science needed a book like this." Alastair Cochran(Co-author of The Search for the Perfect Swing, co-founder of the World Scientific Congress of Golf, influential science consultant for the golf equipment industry)"In a field so prolific with myths borne from the trappings of commercial marketing, author Peter Dewhurst has thoroughly blown the smoke and mirrors of misinformation away to explain the indisputable facts of how golf clubs do what they do. This fascinating book on the field of golf club and golf ball technical performance will be an invaluable resource for everyone involved in the game; and particularly for the inquisitive player wishing to understand the fundamentals of effective play." Tom Wishon, writer, designer, owner of Tom Wishon Golf Technology"No sport involves as much interesting physics as the game of golf and nowhere is this better described than in The Science of the Perfect Swing. Gaining a better understanding of the fundamentals of the game, from Dewhurst's easy to follow style will provide golfers with insights that will improve their performance and add to their overall appreciation of the sport." Raymond Penner, Professor of Physics, Vancouver Island University(developer of the physics for the AimPoint putting trajectory simulation on the Golf Channel)"The Science of the Perfect Swing is an impressive and compelling description of the complete golf shot in the tradition of The Search for the Perfect Swing. This book will benefit any golfer interested in a deeper understanding of the underlying science of the club, swing, and golf shot. Highly recommended." Steven Nesbit, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Lafayette College(expert on the biomechanics of the golf swing)I thoroughly enjoyed reading Peter Dewhurst's The Science of the Perfect Swing. It has both basic engineering science and more technical aspects that will attract both general and advanced readers. Rod Cross, Professor of Physics, University of Sydney(author of the successful books Technical Tennis and the Physics of Baseball and Softball)

From the Author

The principles of golf are those found in the general theory of impact, the science of flight, and the mechanics of motion including the bouncing and rolling of balls. These are the most fascinating of the physical sciences. The book should be considered as a dual-path journey. On the one hand the basic sciences are shown to explain even the finest details of the game. At the same time the different aspects of the game from the swing to the conditions for capture in the hole, provide wonderful examples for explaining scientific principles at work. If young golfers, in particular, become interested in the physical sciences through reading this book that would be a wonderful bonus. Almost everything about the game of golf provides examples of perfection, when measured in terms of the underlying scientific principles. The intention of the book is to describe this fundamental nature of the game in the simplest terms possible without sacrificing rigorous checks on the accuracy of the work. The reader with even distant memories of high school science, and maybe not even good memories, can follow the general descriptions of the golf science, and in so doing reach a much deeper and richer appreciation of the game.

Detailed look into the science behind the golf swing. Contains numerous diagrams and charts. If you are looking for the standard golf tips publication this is not it. If you're looking for a detailed understanding of the dynamics that drive the golf swing this is a real treat. Shows numerous comparisons between professional and amateur swings. While it does contain abundant detailed scientific analysis author summarizes key points for the average person to understand. Very unique publication.

The book is not intended to give any advice on the game, but understanding the physics behind can give you some insights to improve your game. In that sense the author could go through the most common faults and explain the physics behind the ball flight, like over the top, thin shots and the like.

There is no perfect swing but it helps to understand swing.

Good to read heavy on math! few books cover the subject so effectively and with such a level of details!

Excellent book on the physics and research that underlie the "attempts to put an elusive ball into an obscure hole with implements ill-adapted to the purpose."

This is a very physics oriented book. Have to read through a lot of physics to get to the practical information.

Worth purchasing for avid golfers, but I would invest in The Anatomy of Greatness by Brandel Chamblee first.

So I once went on a golf forum and asked if anyone knew whether if the club was accerating when it hit the ball it imparted more velocity then if the acceleration had peaked. The answer was, "I just hit 'em, find 'em, and hit 'em again.". i.e. physics questions not wanted here. But physics is what determines whether the ball goes straight and far. Period. Well, if you like physics, or even if you just don't mind it too much, this book will help your game. Now much of it is very very cerebral and only interesting from an intellectual point of view. You can skip those parts. But lots of it is directly convertible into how you swing. One item in particular increased distance and accuracy for me quite a lot. I won't publish that here because the author deserves to be paid for his insights.

Racundra's First Cruise (Arthur Ransome Societies)

About the Author

Arthur Ransome, world famous for the hit series Swallows & Amazons, had, as a young man in 1913, gone to Russia as a foreign correspondent and journalist. He fell in love with Evgenia, Trotsky’s secretary, whom he later married. Together they owned two small yachts before commissioning the building of Racundra in 1922 at Rigia in Latvia. Its third cruise was their honeymoon.Brian Hammett was given a copy of Swallows and Amazons for his tenth birthday, and was immediately captivated by both the story and the author. The first boat he had was a closed canoe and he called it Swallow. He went on to join the Arthur Ransome Society and became an Arthur Ransome expert, discovering the unpublished Racundra’s Third Cruise in Leeds University library. He has cruised the Baltic himself, following Ransome’s cruises in the area.

A classic of the sail cruising genre. I purchased this Kindle edition to supplement the hard cover copy I own which lacks the original edition's photographs. The Kindle reproductions of the photos are not very high quality, so four out of five stars seems fit.Ransome's tone is droll and won't be to everyone's taste so read a few pages of the Kindle preview and you should be able to tell if it suits.

I have never been so frustrated by an Amazon purchase. This edition is essentially a photocopy of an earlier edition, but with truncated margins on every page -- consistently cutting off or cutting out text. It is therefore unreadable. Should not be for sale.

Authentic review of a man's passion: a walkabout with his sailboat Racundra. Loaded with lots of interesting facts about sailing technic, yachts and the Baltic Sea and Esthonia: a region totally unkwown for me.

Interesting descriptions of Baltic countries and their inhabitants in the 1920's. Lots to interest sailors also, however, the description of voyages is heavy on place names and requires constant reference to two poorly sized and printed maps. Perhaps Ransome relied to heavily on his logs.

I have a Penguin edition of 1956 without all the additional material of this new edition. But the basic story is the same. This is a charming narrative of a cruise in a well-built little sailboat, in waters of the Baltic countries, to places the author clearly knows and loves.Arthur Ransome later wrote a series of children's books focused on sailing. He would certainly have agreed with Kenneth Grahame's "Ratty" that ""There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." One might qualify that, noting that in Ransome's books, the sailing is rather more directed and purposeful - but he always communicates the sheer joy of being on the water in a craft that responds to the elements, at your direction (He was not a fan of engines of any kind - a sometimes necessary evil. Sailing was the thing.)"Racundra's First Cruise" was published in 1923. He had commissioned the building of Racundra, a thirty-foot ketch built for seaworthiness and comfort inside. With the "Ancient Mariner" - an old veteran of the days of sail in clipper ships - and "Cook" - probably the companion who was to become his second wife, but only identified by her unending task - he takes us through many sometimes tricky passages along the Baltic coast, visiting old cobblestoned towns and remote peasant villages. It is delightful to sink back into a time when the sea was still full of trading vessels under sail, though of course large and small steamers also abounded. Mentions of "during the war" refer of course to the Great War. Relics of older conflicts abound - Russian, Swedish, Latvian, Finnish, Estonian - and Ransome provides many interesting footnotes to their stories. My favorite encounter is that with the enigmatic man who lives alone, building a ship, in the forest. The ship is at first seen as "a golden hull in the shadows among those tall trees" then we see that "the upper planking was new, certainly, ruddy gold where the sun caught it, but lower down her hull was weathered"...."The keel, laid on great stones, was joined to them by moss. There was lichen upon it, and on the foot of the stern-post was a large, bright cluster of scarlet toadstools."Enjoy.

I wonder why Hollywood has not yet discovered this book: it has all the ingredients for a box-office hit - sailing in the Baltics, scenic sea- and landscapes, a romantic love affair of a British writer and the private secretary of Leon Trotsky. And the background - the Russian revolution, Estonia's struggle for independence. Rare photos illustrate the book. A must for the romantic sailor!

The story of RACUNDRA is worth reading especially for those attempting to sail or those who have sailed through the Moon Passage in Estonia. The historic descriptions of what is now Saarema, Virtsu, etc. makes wonderful reading!

Great little book - takes you back to a different, simpler, world. You don't have to be a sailor to enjoy this.
