My first impression of this book was that it was disorganized and difficult to follow. However, I soon realized that Teal was presenting the information in the most complete way possible, and she includes ALL methods of astrological prediction. She also includes detailed examples of real-life chart analyses she has done, including those of a survivor of Hamburger Hill, Lady Diana, and JonBenet Ramsey. In my own studies, I'm finding this book very useful for looking retrospectively at events, and finding what the indicators were. It may be a while, if ever, before I attempt to use these methods in a predictive way, but as a means of seeing life events within a person's Chart, Teal's work is my favorite thus far.

Golden nuggets of information buried in a muddled, overly detailed presentation. Not for beginners. If you are a professional astrologer or have a few years of study behind you, you'll be able to pull out a couple of very useful techniques you may not have seen elsewhere--the use of anilunar returns, for example, which is the return of the moon to its own place in the solar return chart. I found it to be an extremely accurate predictive device, and very simple. There is also the wonderful technique of progressing the Saturn return chart, which is a blessing when dealing with older clients still struggling with Saturn's lessons. And she does a very thorough job of taking us step by step through the process of using return charts as predictive devices--not only solar and lunar returns, but the important(and under-used)returns of Mercury, Venus, and Mars. Her advice on how to prioritize progressions is a useful reminder for everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals, and she makes an important point many astrologers forget--that the return charts reflect what is happening in the progressed chart in the same way that the progressed chart can only be an unveiling of the potential in the natal chart. My problem with the book is that it's very difficult to use as a reference work. If you had difficulty interpreting a return, you'd be hard pressed to find an answer here--no index to help you find what you need. And there are much better books on interpreting progressions and transits. I wish that the publisher had coaxed a smaller, more useful book out of this author. Is it worth buying? Yes, if you're serious about your astrology; particularly if you've been swimming in the more esoteric astrological waters lately, and need to get your feet on the ground of practical predictive techniques.

I practice astrology professionally and Celeste Teal is my favorite author. :-P especially one that is living. I have book right here by my side actually. This book goes deeper into the solar, lunar and planetary returns, through Saturn. She also has progression and transit section.The only draw back on the book was the price. I bought it maybe 5 years ago now, but I paid plenty @ $80. Not sure what the price is now but hopefully its better. In any case, it's that good, and apparently popular and sought after. I was still happy with my purchase. I've purchased hundreds, its gotta be over a thousand astrology books...its rare that I really like one, and rare that I'm not somewhat disappointed with a shipped purchase.

I bought this for my mom, she loved it. Shes very intrested in astrology and has read quite a few books and has self taught. She was looking for something a little more in depth on this subject and is happy with her gift. Note: she says she loves the charts!

I have read this book many times, and each time I discover new facets to prediction. While I am still examining if and how prediction has worked with my own chart, and if the microcosm does indeed reflect the macrocosm, Identifying Planetary Triggers uses a methodology that makes sense and is very well written. With it, I successfully identified one spectacular day in advance, though days with less aspects are harder. My advance knowledge didn't change anything, but was of interest in deciding for myself if astrology has validity. It is still a process I am examining, and this book is an excellent guide.

Not for the beginner, and the organization structure is not for everybody, but the heart of this book is worth any reading time devoted to it. I particularly like the way she approaches planet returns. She discusses Solar, Saturn, Jupiter and even personal planet returns. Her honoring of one of our astrological ancestors, Hubert Smith, by including some of his transit intrepretations, is refreshing in this current humanistic astrology era. For me, this one of those astrology library basics.

this book contains quite a lot of very useful information,,both technical information as well as good reference information.pleased with the author's writing style,,but it seems to be a bit confusing at times..as she seems to be thinking very quickly and throw in things (although very useful) in little hidden places,,so is necessary to reread over and over again. great book to have as a reference too i think.

The women share their tragedies, disappointments, and secrets as they care for the dovecotes, always aware of the loss of Jerusalem, of Roman brutality and of the catastrophe that awaits them all.The characters become difficult to distinguish between, the novel drones with repetitive description, spells, magic, and prayers to Ashtoreth that Jews (Israelites), left behind centuries before.Whether or not two women and five children escaped death at Masada by surrender is unclear however, known is that when the Romans entered the palace on Masada, all were dead, as the 960 Jews preferred death to slavery under the Romans.

One of the best books I've read. Saw a documentary on Masada many years ago and found it intriguing how a settlement of people lived and died on top of that mountain. Willing to commit suicide rather than be taken into a life of slavery. This novel gave insight to how real lives may have been lived and the many trials they went through over the years. Though the book centers on several main characters it still gives you a sense of what some lived with or through. And how women carried the burden of being women, feeling one way but having to act in another.The book is long, but once I got into it, it was hard to put down. It also came out that many of these women had intertwining lives that they didn't realize. Though I knew the story of Masada, I still was interested in how the author would tell the story and bring it to an end. Was not disappointed.....though towards the end I actually became very sad at so many having to come to such a fate.

"Dovekeepers" is the first book I've read of Alice Hoffmans'. In fact, one evening my wife looked at the book while I was reading in bed and said: "You're reading Alice Hoffman? I've read Alice Hoffman. But you don't read Alice Hoffman!"And so I DID read Alice Hoffman and I liked Alice Hoffman. This is a very good book. It's real deep and very weighty."Dovekeepers" orbits around the real life events of the early 70s A.D. in ancient Judea. Rome was large and in charge and in the midst of shattering a Judean rebellion (seen commemorated in the famous Arch of Titus in the Roman Forum only a few hundred yards from the Colosseum in Italy). Several hundred Jews fled Jerusalem to the desert near the Dead Sea and moved into the former mountain fortress of King Herod at Masada. While the proud Jewish rebels held off a Roman legion for several years, Rome ultimately prevailed and all but two women and five children killed themselves rather than allow themselves to be overrun.Hoffman's novel follows the lives of four women who all find themselves on Masada. Each woman has a dedicated 100-150 pages that weave in and out of each other's stories with the collective whole building a comprehensive picture of their mutual plight. The stories connect the women together in ways that are obvious and follow the primary arc of the novel, but also in ways that are surprising and poignantly fulfilling. The connections build and develop on many levels: physically, emotionally, and symbolically.The book is full of characters who are broken and hurt; affected by some deep trauma catalyzed by the Roman attacks on Jerusalem; driving each, by their own will or otherwise, to the fortress in the desert. One of Hoffman's women is Yael, a deeply fractured and self actualizing individual who sums up the disparate journeys that brought the women to Masada: "We came like doves across the desert. In a time when there was nothing but death, we were grateful for anything, and most grateful of all when we awoke to another day."You'll feel the weight of each character's pain and sorrow increase as the novel progresses. There are few happy endings. Hoffman's themes cover the gamut from fate and destiny, to religion and love, and the depths of devotion.Faith is a thread that runs throughout Hoffman's carefully woven tapestry. It's not just a religious entity, but something that binds individuals, family units, as well as the entire rebel community. In Revka, Hoffman ponders the rebel Jews: "If we lost our faith, we would become like the clouds that swell across the western sky when the wind pushes them into the desert promising rain but empty inside." It's through Revka also that Hoffman finally (about half-way through he book) provides a heart-wrenchingly warm and genuinely surprising treat at the end of her particular novella. For the first time the furrow on my brow melted into a smile on my face (note: it didn't last very long).Hoffman's Judean world is one of religion and tradition, of myth and magic: a world where everything in it has significance...symbolic or real. Some vignettes read almost as something out of a fantasy novel, but there's no melodrama to their weight.In looking for a good way to summarize the books' tone, I found a couple of strong quotes. This first comes from Shirah, `The Witch of Moab': "Being human means losing everything we love best in the world. But would you ask to be anything else?" This second is from Revka: "...our waking life is formed by our sorrow. " In each character is anchored a heavy weight.In this misogynistic society, few men come across in a truly positive light. Though Hoffman writes very sparingly, in her few words, she's able to expresses a multiplicity of ideas and thoughts. Characters are never solely what they seem to be and there is very little that is purely black or white. Hoffman's world is filled with shades of gray.This book is going to resonate strongly for a lot of readers. It may be a bit polarizing because of its very serious nature. But as a first time reader of Hoffman, and a male, I feel fuller for having read this novel. I highly recommend it.

Ever since I went back to work, a morning meeting is out of the question. Finally, I thought to call the local library and guess what! They have an evening book club!The Dovekeepers was the book selection for the month. I've never read Alice Hoffman before and with close to 600 pages, I feared I may not make it to the end. Boy, was I wrong. The Dovekeepers tells the story of nine hundred Jews living on Masada in the desert, under siege by the Romans. We see life in the mountain fortress through the eyes of four women all assigned to work in the dovecote. Each arrives at Masada from a different path. Each has a story, and a secret which eventually binds them all together. Their fight for survival often conflicts with a deep faith that governs their way of life.Alice Hoffman has given us a poignant, beautiful and gripping novel. It has been meticulously researched and written. I learned so much about a piece of history that I knew little about and it touched me deeply. The language used to tell these women's stories is magical. How they are woven together is perfection. The Dovekeepers is not to be missed.I received a warm welcome as the newcomer in a well established book club. The discussion was lively and made me think about events in the story in a different light, one that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I read a wonderful book, one that I never would have chosen myself. And I made some new friends who share my love of books.Whether you belong to a book club or not, please put The Dovekeepers on your list of must reads. A whole new world may be opened up that you never expected. I know it did for me in more ways than one.

Bought this book for my Daddy to use with the Dash Diet program he was put on by his physician. I was juicing and eating a Paleo diet myself, but when I saw his, I realized that it was much more balanced and easier to follow for the men in my life. It is recommended for people with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc... I find the recipes are hearty for men to adapt to much easier than any other that I have ever seen.

Very disappointed because there are no portion recommendations or caloric counts. This book is not worth any amount of money. I do not recommend it al all.

How can a cookbook whose selling point is healthy low sodium, low fat, low calorie recipes not include any nutrition information for each recipe? I'm on a low salt diet. I'm expected to believe that lemon chicken recipe is low enough in sodium to fit into my diet because she doesn't provide that information. Could be 200 mg per serving or 600. Useless for me or anyone actually keeping track of numbers.

Restricted to a low salt diet I had no idea where to start. This wonderful diet book has been a life saver. It taught me that food could taste good even when it was low salt. I have recommended that any of my friends, on a low salt or not, get their own copy and stop borrowing mine! It has become very popular among my health conscious friends. I am so grateful that I found it - or - as I believe, it found me.

Okay I cook a lot. Most of these recipes are tried and true. I like that there's no extra salt added. BUT, a lot of the recipes seem a bit sweet for me. I don't mind spicy or tangy, I just can't handle sweet food. That's just me though. So with some tweaking I could work them.

As someone who says she "doesn't cook," I was delighted to have these practical, easy, basic recipes that I could imagine preparing for myself and partner who has recently been diagnosed with heart problems. It also allowed me to make a list of spices and sauces that I should have on hand, as I experiment with ideas from this book. I can't wait to get started.

It was an ok read. I'm a single mom with a full time job I needed quick kid friendly meals that worked with the dash diet that I'm on for my blood pressure.

This is a great follow up book for Marissa's previous book on DASH. I especially enjoyed all the healthy recipes the author shares. A great go-to recipe book for anyone following the DASH lifestyle, and or, looking to live a healthier life!

Oracle Coherence 3.5 provides an excellent introduction to the features of Coherence, including some advanced features such as backing map listeners. More importantly, the features are always put into context. The book explains what problems the features solve and how they fit into real world use cases. The motivations for using features make it far easier to know when to apply them. Chapter 8: Implementing the Persistence Layer is especially good at explaining step by step how to use Coherence to solve particular problems.I like that the book always shows code examples. For a developer, a snippet of code is worth a thousand words of explanation. The book also provides some utility code that will be useful in many applications plus a link to more free utilities.The tone of the book is very approachable. You feel like Aleks Seovic sat down to explain Coherence to you; it's not like reading a textbook.I wouldn't even try to use Coherence for C++ without first reading "Chapter 11: Accessing Coherence from C++".My only quibbles are that some of the code formatting seems a bit odd and there are some minor wording errors.Overall, this is an excellent book that is always pragmatic. It will help developers solve real problems in the real world using Coherence.

1. somehow I had tough time finding details on how it integrates with Weblogic server2. There should be a 2nd version of this book with latest features that are available. it just barely touched the new details of 3.5 .Would be nice if the 2nd edition of this is available

Oracle Coherence 3.5 is a great book to learn Oracle Coherence. What are missing, as someone else already mentioned, are JPA, Hibernate, and transaction. I will give 5 stars if it has three chapters to cover these three topics how they work with Coherence.

Most all examples are from a provided cluster based set of 3 applications running and communicating all together on different platforms: Java, C#, and C++. The book has one of the best defined persistent/domain layer description, so better than what you get in Java Persistence with Hibernate.So the book is not just listing APIs but how to use them together with an explicit attempt to provide quality code.The author seems experimented on finding workaround for design/APIs issue of Coherence, so he provided many packaged extra classes to help simplify usages.What is missing in the book is coverage about transaction based application, like J2EE application using JTA/Hibernate, and how locking and rollback fit with lifecycle of cache modifications.In other words, there is no discussion how Coherence integrates and helps when it is used as the second level cache for Hibernate.It's a must read for all Coherence users. It's a useful read for anybody involved with local cache or in cluster.

I might be a little biased, since I work on Coherence at Oracle, and I helped to proof-read the book. Nonetheless, there's no doubt that this book has been extremely helpful for new customers picking up Oracle Coherence and needing to dive into the technical details quickly. More importantly, this book isn't just about the product -- it's about how to design and build complex distributed systems. In other words, this book is a great way to learn _how_ to build the types of systems (like banking systems, exchanges, real-time risk analytics, telco infrastructure, eCommerce web sites, etc.) that use Coherence, even if you aren't currently using Coherence.Great book -- thanks Aleks!

The layout of the book is very well organized starting from basics and building on as one progresses through the book. I love studying it.
