About the Author

Steve Cox was born in Oakland, California in 1949. He grew up and received his education in Fort Smith, Arkansas and served in the Arkansas Air National Guard from 1967 to 1973. He is a founding member and officer of the Southwest American Historical Artifact Research Association (SAHARA), a private research organization in operation since 1974. Steve founded and operated Napo Basin Mining Company, a placer gold mining operation in the Amazon Jungle of Ecuador, from 1979 to 1984. Steve and his wife Ginger were married in Quito, Ecuador in 1981 and spent their honeymoon on the Rio Napo in the Amazon Jungle. He has discovered and recorded many historic sites lost to time. Among these are two sites now on the National Historic Register, a 1830s frontier fort lost for over 70 years, and two Civil War battlefields, one of which is now a public battlefield park. Other discoveries include lost military camps, Civil War skirmishes, and archeological sites too numerous to mention. Steve has worked with universities, museums, national parks and research organizations for over 50 years, and has extensive experience in mapping, art and illustration, and artifact identification and restoration. He has owned several residential and commercial design businesses since 1967, and now operates Steve Cox Designs, Inc. I've been avidly collecting and reading "fusing" (kilnformed glass) books for about 20 years, and this may be the best single book on studio practice I've seen yet. As it says, it's not a beginner's book (Griffith's earlier book, Beginner's Guide to Kilnformed Glass, does that),. Rather, it's the book you'll want once you have a few successful kilnformed pieces under your belt and have begun to wonder if there's more to kilnforming than sushi dishes and bowls.It's divided into three sections (and Lark should really add some "look inside" samples to Amazon so you can see what I'm talking about). The first covers setting up and using a glass studio. The second deals with more advanced ways to decorate glass for firing (casting, 3D printing, airbrushing, sandblasting, box making, etc.). Spoiler alert: If you're into making jewelry, she's got some advanced tips for creating dichroic slabs and precious metal clay findings that you'll love.The third section, though, is where this book really shines. Griffith has experimented with applying other media techniques to glass practice, and they're pretty exciting. She shows you how to make your own glass pastels and glass clay (which can be fired in the kiln the way you can fire ceramics), create marbling effects with glass enamels, make your own roll-ups, and more.The information is presented in an exploratory, "I wanted to see what would happen if I..." fashion, which gets my own creative juices going. Griffith takes pains to explain exactly how she got to a certain point, which makes it very easy to use her explorations as a starting point for my own. She includes firing schedules for both glass and PMC, with a quite-proper "your mileage may vary" warning.About the only real criticism I'd have is minor: On a couple of projects Griffith takes you through the very well-illustrated steps but doesn't show the finished piece. There's so much else going on here, though, that I don't really miss it.

This is definitely not for someone who just bought their first kiln. It is so nice to find an interesting book that doesn't cater to those who have hardly handled a glass cutter. I have been working in glass quite a while and love to find books that don't give me projects but push me toward techniques I haven't thought about before and give practical advice on things I have tried that maybe did not go as I had planned.The Gallery pages are gorgeous and inspiring. I do wish there was more of a buyer's guide for tools and materials mentioned that are outside of the glass realm. A great book for true glass geeks, you know who you are.

I love this book. A lot of useful information and new ideas to try out. I only have a couple of gripes. A good portion of the book does still cover some basic stuff, like tools and materials, but certainly not as much as a beginners book on the general process such as temperature curves etc. This is a good thing, leave that stuff to other books. The rest of the content I would rank as excellent. I learned some very useful concepts and have some great ideas from reading this. I would highly recommend this book to others who want some more advanced techniques that simple tack fusing and slumping.

Even after 27 years of practicing "warm glass", having learned originally from Boyce Lundstrom at Camp Colton, I am learning a lot from this book. Thank you Brenda Griffith! Hey fellow kiln workers, it never hurts to see what clever, creative things are possible that you haven't thought of yet. This book is wonderful!!!

This book is the best book I have read about working with kiln-formed glass and I have read most of them. I can't remember the last time any book caused me to repeatedly say, "Wow, hey...I need to try that!" I have bookmarks with notes on them all over this book. Brenda did a fantastic job of presenting the ideas and appropriate pictures to show you what she is talking about. Very well done.

**Some possible spoilers** These are necessary because there is no way to review this book without mentioning some of the events in the story.The closer I got to the end of this book, the more I wondered how this story would be resolved in the few pages that were left. The trouble is, it never was. There is absolutely no way to know how this story ended. My imagination doesn't tell me how this all worked out.It was a good story, as far as the story-telling went. I actually liked the story's progression and wanted to know how it would all turn out.However, as others have said, the parents seemed to lack curiosity about what was wrong with their daughter. Why do they never ask for a concrete diagnosis? Why do they not take her to every doctor in the country until they find someone sufficiently well-equipped to correctly diagnose her? Would the emotional issues with Kate ever be resolved or cured? She seemed to be stuck in a world of resentment and sullenness, with no hope of ever coming out the other end as a healthy functional young woman. We never find out what her diagnosis is. We never find out why she made the accusations she made against her father.There wasn't one single moment in this book when I trusted Kate to be around Josh, nor was there one single moment when Kate appeared as a sympathetic character. I disliked her throughout the book, even though her parents seemed to think the sun rose and set on her.We never find out how Josh progressed through his injury. Did he regain his age-appropriate functions? Was it ever determined that he would always be a step behind every other child in his age group?I'm not aware that the author is a psychologist, so perhaps it's impossible for her to flesh out these characters, emotionally and/or mentally. This does not serve her readers fairly, and that is unfortunate.

Alert: Some spoilers. I quickly devoured this book -- literally could not put it down. Family History is a story of a family that quickly turns from the ideal family to most people's worst nightmares. Ned, the father is an artist and school teacher; Rachel, a mother and art restorer; Kate the popular teen. Until she returns from camp, sullen and changed. Rachel is finally pregnant with a long awaited son, and when Kate drops him in a seeming accident and then accuses Ned of sexual abuse the family falls apart. Much of the start of the novel lays the foundation for this shocking incident, almost unbelievable in its horror. The accusations tear the family apart, and Kate spirals. She is sent to a therapeutic boarding school.But what happened? Was the accident truly an accident? Is Ned innocent? And how will this play out.While the novel was well-written to the point of being very painful to read, the ending was not satisfying, and did not provide the hoped for answers (instead it suggests that these answers will be forthcoming and that Kate is on the road to that). I suppose Shapiro wants us to draw our own conclusions, but I'm unsure if that is fair. It kind of let me down not to know. The ending was a little too pat: the accident was an accident. Ned very probably was innocent. Then why did Kate do what she did? Is there a connection to camp?I have read and enjoyed other books by this author, and enjoyed this one too, so I am inferring that Kate probably was a victim. At camp. And that much of what she did was based on that. But how awful and shocking.

Last week, author and memoirist Dani Shapiro wrote a thoughtful essay on her blog, On Doing What We Can. She was struggling with her task at hand, as a writer. Who might care about what she writes and why should she write, when there are so many crucial issues at stake in the world. She went on to talk about how she felt similar feelings before when her infant son was sick and during the 9/11 attack. Horrific times make us all question our importance in the world and whether what we do and whether our contributions are significant enough. I was so struck by her words and her essay and subsequently read an essay that she wrote years ago, about an accident that her babysitter had with her son, which she also wrote a novel about. The novel is FAMILY HISTORY that she wrote 10 years ago. I thought I had read all her books, several of which are memoirs and all of which have moved me in many ways, to the point that I can say that she is truly one of my favorite writers. And, I eagerly await her new memoir coming out this spring, HOURGLASS: TIME, MEMORY, MARRIAGE.FAMILY HISTORY introduces a young couple just starting their lives together. They move from the hustle bustle of Manhattan to a small town to raise their child, thinking they are going to provide a bucolic lifestyle for themselves and their little family. They have their own family/friend issues, a judgmental widowed mother-in-law, parents who reside in the small town and seem to know everything and control everything, picture perfect best friends whom they can never seem to live up to and envy seems to creep up on them even though they adore them. Their beautiful young daughter is a star student and athlete and then one day everything changes. Add a later in life baby to the mix, a dreadful accident and all hell seems to break lose. Once a happy family, can they remain one.Beautifully written, with characters nailed to a T, this book reads like watching a movie. It is so visual, so real, at times, I wanted to jump into the book and tell them what to do or warn them of what might be ahead. The characters wrestle with feelings that have not been resolved, struggle with issues that they don’t comprehend, however they are intelligent and have the best intentions, perhaps they are just not sure how to get there.

Magic Awakens is an unfolding story. At first you think "What does this have to do with magic". Then it unfolds and like a flower in early morning one petal at a time it gives a peak at the bueaty inside. As you continue reading it captures you and won't let go until you get through to the end. You then exhale and realize you have been reading all night again.This book is exciting, warm, and the authoress draws you in dying to know what is next. It's always a suprize! This is well worth the cost and you will mark the author so you can get her next book as soon as it comes out.

And by 'origin', I mean that two ways: The first book of a series so it has to detail the people and places, plus it tells us the story of Clara's magic awakening--and does it quite interestingly in a bathtub, but not with the best of results. (Or: don't mix your elements until you understand them.)There are already a lot of great reviews for this book telling a lot about the story. I just want to say that it moves at a good pace and kept me reading longer than I intended each night. Nicely done, Lucia Ashta.Another Big Plus for me was: I did not notice and spelling or grammar issues within this book--Fantastic!She does have a request in the beginning of Book 2 to email her if you find any. I find that the sign of an author who really wants her works to shine. (I read Book 2 right after finishing Book 1)The story also has a 'proper' ending IMO. The major points are wrapped up, but it leaves the reader to start the next step in Clara's journey in understanding her magic. (Note: Book 2 starts exactly where Book 1 leaves off.)

I am a "spiritual junkie" but every so often I want to take a break from my learning and just enjoy a great read... but still keep the "spiritual" side alive. That is what this book is... spiritual in a different sense then I am used to but intriguing enough that April 26th won't come soon enough.. which is when the sequel will be released and I've already preordered it so that I can follow Clara as she experiences the wonders of this magic. Lucia's writing style is amazing! I love the way she weaves the story... from her character build ups to the era in which they lived.. you feel as though you are sitting alongside them and watching the story unfold. Love love love it!!!

This was a fun book. The plot was interesting and not predictable, the heroine was strong and supporting by a good cast of supporting characters. The world created by Lucia Ashta was original and in some ways very innovative. Neither "high fantasy" nor "urban fantasy" but a story that lovers of both will enjoy. It's a great start to a series and I'm looking forward to more.

Man talk about breaking it down to build it back up! Lucia totally rocked this baby right here. I mean she always shines, but in this one its as bright as the sun. I never saw what was coming until it was to late. The characters are unique and diverse with different traits and personalities it literally takes your breath. The scenes are descriptive and graphic that it really comes alive. With all the twists and turns the excitement and adrenaline are running high. Lucia is absolutely brilliant with an imagination and insight she covers the smallest details so you can actually picture it in your mind's eye. Lucia did.an absolute remarkable job bringing this read together beautifully. Fantastic job Lucia, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

I enjoyed this book on so many levels!First of all, I really appreciated the very intelligent and skillful way in which magic was woven into the central story-line, which essentially is about a vulnerable and yet innately powerful heroine, Clara, "coming of age" and gently losing her innocence in the process. From a heroine having no magic (or even knowledge of magic) it slowly builds until, by the end of the book.. well.. I will leave it there for you to discover what happens.Secondly - and I really really love this - is the consistent respect that Clara shows to everyone. This includes her parents, her maid, her sister, the horses that carry her, and even nature itself. What a positive message and certainly one that in itself sets this work apart from others of its genre.Throughout the book, Lucia also beings out various strong contrasting elements such as that of the rich nobles versus poor peasants, evil versus good, old versus young and innocence versus worldly, and others, all of which serve to add flavour and colour.This is actually only the second book by Lucia that I have read and I have to say I really like the way she writes.Definitely recommended!

Clara is a 16-year-old whose cold parents are trying to marry her off to improve their family standing. She has four sisters, but only the youngest has any feeling for her. She meets her prospective husband and thinks she might be able to live with him, but he makes some remarks about his next-oldest brother. Then this arranged marriage falls through, and Clara is told she will marry that brother Winston. She knows that would be disaster and she fell ill of a fever. Nobody could get rid of the fever, so her father hired a "magician" to cure her. The magician took her away to the family lake house to treat her, and that's where it all starts. It comes to a head when Winston and his friends attack, hurt the magician and try to rape Clara. Clara discovers she has magic and saves them. You could find this plot in many other books; what you can't find there is how it feels. Clara's thoughts and emotions come through loud and clear in this book.

Magic Awakens, The Witching World 1, is an awesome book. It is a coming of age book where Clara is learning to use her awakening magic. She must contend with autocratic and power hungry parents and her arranged marriage to a brutal betrothed. Lucia has created an exceptional story line and realistic and wonderful characters. This story grabs you at page one and keeps you turning pages to the end. As you finish, you realize that you are excited to continue this series. I highly recommend this story - you will not be disappointed.
