I have been an artist all my life, and always worked at the scale of smaller, portable art: drawing, a painting, a small sculpture. However, I was always intrigued with the installation art I have seen at museums, even if I did not always understand it...it "felt" intriguing...-wow.. art you could actually walk into and interact with- and wanted to know more...ultimately I wanted to try my hand at it someday. So I bought a couple different books on site-specific and installation art to learn more on how they were done, how artists conceptualized them and came up with their ideas...this was one of those books. I am still making some connections for myself after reading this book. It deserves a review by someone who works with such art; but as an interested reader, I can say there is meat here for both the novice and the specialist.

I have just opened the FOURTH copy of this book and still Amazon has not gotten it right. They are shipping this heavy paperback book in a paper padded envelope and they are getting destroyed. I told customer service each time that they needed to send it in a box, but no such luck. Not only has this wasted time and money - mine and Amazon's - I STILL don't have a usable copy of the book, and it is not very green of amazon to waste so much paper. Why? To save a few cents on shipping? Come on Amazon.com - you can do better than this.

Realizing the gap in the field, Suderberg invited a number of distinguished art writers to parse this new medium and produced its first critical compendium of note and usefulness.For artists and faculty exploring work outside of painting and sculpture, SPACE, SITE, INTERVENTION: SITUATING INSTALLATION ART, is required reading. It raises the most pertinent issues that one must address to produce meaningful, important site pieces.

This book is filled with writers who are first and foremost trying to prove their own intelligence rather than discuss the topic at hand; installation artists. Este es uno de los libros mas importantes de la literatura cristiana. Una obra que simboliza lo que es la vida del cristiano, todas las dificultades que se encuentran en el camino y como Dios nos va guiando y poniendo a la gente adecuada en el camino.

Un libro que todo cristiano deberia leer, pues esta lleno de alegorias y enseñanzas. Creo que al leerlo se comprenden las vivencias de todo cristiano y los obstaculos que debe superar.

Al final aclaran que es una versión condensada, aunque personalmente igual lo recomiendo tocará conseguir la versión completa en un futuro.

Muy resumido, pero con la esencia del original. El camino a la salvación lleno de desafíos, pero por la gracia divina el cristiano lo sigue hasta la patria Celestial. Gracias por publicarlo.

Having spent more than forty years in the study and treatment of male and female sexual expression or lack thereof,I found this book to a thorough representation of what is happening in the fields of research of the last twenty years.The writing is indeed a labor of love and well worth reading by any person fascinated by the question of understanding female sexual desire,I am reminded of the words of a female colleague and coworker who said that male sexuality could be explained in words written on the back of a postage stamp but for women one would need all the pages of the Encyclopedia Brittanica. This book that can serve as reference book for those in the field of teaching and treating sexual relationships,

The book contains some interesting information, but quite some writing seems to have the purpose to fill the pages. Lengthy description what apparel, hair, beard, etc. the researcher has, isn't relevant stuff. I would have considered interviews with women a more interesting subject.

Lots of questions but few answers. This is not the Authors fault of course, the subject matter is not well funded and attracts few takers. The book is well written and I believe that most lay people will find it easy enough to follow. I know that I learned a lot and would love to learn more.

As a single man, the insight into the sexuality of women in this book is a little startling. But, better to know the truth than live in an imaginary world. The scientific evidence to back up what is being put forth is convincing. A great read... riveting...

This is a balanced and current view of research on female sexuality. Readable and well written, it makes the case for understanding female sexuality as biologically as well as socially driven It almost but not quite reaches the psychoanalytic insight that sxuality is fueled by aggression as well as tenderness for women as well as for men. More attention to modern psychoanalytic theory rather than just rellying on antique Freud would have strengthened the book.

Very good, science based and well written. I already expected that kind of conclusions, so I was not shocked, but I was delighted by the serious, documented argumentation of thr author.

In 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland Hitler's Luftwaffe had a strength of nearly 8,500 fighters and bombers. The US Army air corps had barely 1/5th that number. Patton's Second Armored brigade had only 325 tanks while the Germans had more than 2,000. There were only 334,000 men in the total US armed forces. The US army ranked 18th largest in the world with about 190,000 men just ahead of Holland and behind Hungary and Romania. Time Magazine said "the US Army looked like a few nice boys with BB guns." There was no Military Industrial Complex, the USA was not a superpower and about 3/4's of the population supported isolationism and the preservation of peace at all cost.From July 1940 to VJ day in August 1945 the United States produced a staggering $183 billion in arms. America's shipyards launched 141 aircraft carriers, eight battleships, 807 cruisers, destroyers and destroyer escorts, 203 submarines and almost 52 million tons of merchant shipping. US factories turned out 88,410 tanks, 257,000 artillery pieces and 640,000 Jeeps. The United States produced 324,750 aircraft averaging 170 per day since 1942. Nearly 10 million American men and women would serve their country in uniform.The United States, by the end of the war, had the best equipped fighting force on the planet. Moreover, through the lend lease program the United States had supplied many of the arms needs of Britain, the Soviet Union and other allied forces.How did this remarkable transformation take place? FDR was wise enough to recognize that the power of American business, more often than not led by those who opposed him politically, needed to be harnessed in order to win the war. Freedom's Forge shows how FDR reached out to Bill Knudsen, a Danish American and the President of General Motors, to spearhead the wartime production effort. The famous carmaker Henry Ford, who was an ardent isolationist before Pearl Harbor and despised FDR's New Deal, built the massive Willow Run production facility to crank out B-24 aircraft. Henry Kaiser, who had specialized in road construction projects before the war, became a massive ship and aircraft builder. Kaiser led the "Six Companies" that produced thousands of Liberty Ships that ferried men and equipment to the war zones. Kaiser had one Liberty ship built in an astonishing 4 days, fifteen hours and twenty-six minutes. Winston Churchill declared, "The foundation of all our hopes and schemes was the immense shipbuilding program of the United States."Not all US casualties in World War II served in the military; many were from the world of work and business. Morrison Knudsen (another "Six Companies" member) had employees serving alongside US Marines in the defense of Wake Island in December 1941. A Japanese amphibious force was dispatched to capture the island in late 1941. Many of these MK engineers fought, were killed or wounded, and were captured and spent years in Japanese POW camps. Thousands of civilian merchant mariners aboard Liberty ships lost their lives particularly as a result of Nazi U-boats in the North Atlantic. On December 30th, 1942 Boeing's best civilian test pilot, Eddie Allen, was killed with the rest of his crew while test-flying a B-29 which crashed near Boeing field in Seattle. Boeing later sorted out the issues with the B-29 and the "Superfortress" bomber; these planes ignited Japanese cities with incendiary bombs (developed by Kaiser) and delivered the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Arthur Herman's fine book is not without a few flaws. Herman writes that Hap Arnold "was the only senior military or civilian leader to oppose dropping the atomic bomb." Yet in Eisenhower's own book Mandate for Change, he recalls a Potsdam conference encounter with Henry Stimson, the head of the War Department, where he "voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives." Herman’s book is interesting and there is room forBoth books on your shelf. Knudsen is a hero all history people should know so I do recommend this book.In an era where labor needed help from the government and FDR provided help and hope, I wish HermanFocused exclusively on the great accomplishments of labor and manage,ent together.

Freedom's Forge portrays the businessmen and industrialists who organized and managed the production of war materials for the US involvement in WW ll as unsung heros. Without their organizing and production genius, defeating the Axis powers would have been much more difficult if not impossible.The war started with the Axis powers well-armed and with substantials resource production capabilities. However, during the last two years of the war, the US overtook them in a big way and made war equipment faster than all the Axis powers combined. We were also able to supply our Allies with much of what they needed; especially England and Russia.Many history books have characterized these men (such as William Knudsen and Henry Kaiser, among others) as robber barons. They did profit handsomely, but they did earn it and the reader is left with the sense they did what they had to because of a "calling"; they were driven and not just by profit.What made these industrial giants' leadership interesting is that most of them were Republicans who were appointed by Progressive Democrats under the Roosevelt administration; you will have to read the book to see how all this turned out.Freedom's Forge will provide the reader with a different perspective of what was going on behind the scenes of the WW ll effort; it is a good read.Rich

This is about the captains of industry who devised the most incredible production lines for war materiel ever known, as well as superior manufacturing systems. Henry Ford is revealed as a noncooperative magnate when contacted regarding the manufacture of certain parts, sternly isolationist and totally out of touch. It's okay, Packard stepped up and made those parts.The incredible difficulty in cranking out tanks when the plans weren't all that great, nor were the results when the plans were followed, led to substitutions and improvements that ultimately devised the Sherman tank, one of the machines that was crucial in the winning of the war. The plans for the firearms designed by J.M. Browning involved the use of old manufacturing jigs that had been stored for years and were scarcely worth taking out of their crates. Another company stepped forward and took on that project, successfully creating firearms in mass quantities.Manufacturing in Great Britain was severely limited by the availability of raw materials, and by their system of making one machine at a time, customizing it to perfection, and sending it out the door. The American system of mass production, emphasizing accuracy of production parts so that they were interchangeable with ANY of the units instead of just one, was far superior, and ultimately resulted in production numbers that were astounding.I really enjoyed this book, and now see a lot of big industrial projects differently, as those are discussed in the book as well. There were heroes in those days, and not all of them wore uniforms.

Lucifer options his life story-from his starring role with Adam and Eve to his struggles with an autocratic God-to a film producer and torments Declan's lover, Viola, with the promise of a juicy part in the upcoming movie. But for all his jauntiness, Lucifer must unexpectedly wrestle with Gunn's conscience, including Gunn's memories of Penelope, his alternately loathed and longed-for ex. When Lucifer makes the disastrous decision to see Penelope and forgive her for dumping him, he confronts the goodness of mercy, a battle that leaves him sick with nausea and cognitive disorientation. Lucifer tosses wisecracks around as if they were hand grenades. On the wickedness of a rival of Gunn's, he quips, "There's no murder in him, and only a very predictable dribble of lust. Duncan's last novel, Hope (1998), was about pornography addiction. Since then, he's apparently found God, or rather, the Devil. His latest novel features the Prince of Darkness incarnate in the body of down-and-out writer Declan Gunn (anagram, anyone?), just about to slit his wrists. The apocalypse looms, and God has offered fallen angel Lucifer a second chance at redemption by enticing him with a month of earthly embodiment--an offer he can't refuse, given his taste for cocaine, sexual mischief, and other evil earthly pleasures. In between acts of debauchery, however, Lucifer/Gunn resurrects his literary career and revels childlike in the Earth's simple offerings: tastes, smells, sunsets, London. He muses theological, contemplating free will and the Fall and thinks about--just maybe--getting back on God's good side. Seduced by our diabolical narrator's wicked humor and Duncan's clever conceit, the novel's Christian redemption moral may catch some readers off guard (wasn't this book supposed to be about evil pleasures?), but they likely won't want to put it down. Thought provoking concept with poor execution. At every possible turn Duncan attempts to impress the reader with his vocabulary, overly dramatic expression of the simple and grandiose intellect. Entire paragraphs and pages are filled with endless metaphors and similes, each attempting to out dramatize it's predecessor. Any sparks of enjoyment that could be achieved by the reader are quickly extinguished by Duncan's inability to just tell the tale without interjecting overindulgent attempts to impress the reader with his intellect. Multiple times I found myself bored and disinterested with the direction and interactions of the story. This is my first Glen Duncan work and although I am willing to investigate another work, I would not recommend this book.

The language. I have to begin with the language of this book, the captivating voice of the narrator, the unique cadence of the prose. I would find it worthwhile for that alone. What further amazed me is the fact that, up until the very last sentence, I didn't know how it would end. You can't put the last several pages down (and the rest of them are pretty difficult to set aside). There's a glimpse of a world that makes a very different sort of sense from the old mythologies we know and love, a world that flows logically from their tales when one accounts for the lens of history, but a world that manages to use those tales to turn what we usually know on its head. This is my favorite type of story, and the author does it impeccably.

i usually read the negative reviews first, a system i find sort of works for more objective considerations, like in the case of tools and mechanical parts.after reading this book i decided to look at the amazon reviews, negative first. WOW! this approach does not work for subjective concerns.smarter people than i have trashed this book on a number of counts, some of which i can relate to, others outside of my scope of experience. i have not read neil gaiman (whose name i have probably misspelled), nor am i familiar with the other works referred to as likely templates or outright scripts for this story.yeah, the anagrammatic matter of lucifer's earthly name immediately struck me as silly, but i got over that pretty quickly.obviously i am no anchorage of literary criticism, but from the standpoint of the "average viewer", i can comfortably say this thing is a fine entertainment.SPOILER in lucifer's voice: "... ice cream is so good tasting, and so bad for you, that i cannot believe i had nothing to do with its invention..."seriously, if you are above it, move along. if you are an irreverent occasional reader like me, you might just find this book fanf***ingtastic.

Attempted suicide.My Thoughts: I'm still trying to make sense of this piece. The book isn't much about anything but the journey, Lucifer's experiences spending time in a mortal form and how he spends that time, his thoughts on various things, and his determination to write a book that will once and for all set things straight and tell the story from his point of view. As such, it tends to be rambling, wandering from topic to topic (often self-consciously so), and somewhat disjointed. It will not be for everyone, that is for sure, but I found I rather enjoyed it. Lucifer has a sort of wry voice that I found appealing (when he wasn't thinking appalling things), and his descriptions of the things around him made me see things in a new light. I mean, just imagine that you've spent all this time immaterial and suddenly you're in the material world, feeling, smelling, hearing, seeing... it would be overwhelming. I think the author did a good job of portraying that idea. The one problem I had with this is that everything is left up in the air. What happens with Lucifer? I know I”d like to know. That wasn't enough to detract from the story, though; it just left me with burning questions that I wanted answered. If this sounds like the sort of thing that would appeal to you, be sure to check this book out.Disclosure: I purchased this e-book for myself. Beset by distractions, miscalculations and all the natural shocks that flesh is heir to, the Father of Lies slowly begins to learn what it's like being us.

I really wanted to give this novel the benefit of the doubt (especially since I paid for it), so I struggled reading it until I was halfway through and then I gave up.It's too boring--There's way too much rambling, metaphors, and unnecessary use of rarely seen vocabulary.It wasn't enjoyable having to figure out what he was talking about half the time. At first, the book seemed to hold promise that things would get better, but instead it only worsened.Maybe the author was trying to show that after millennia of pain and suffering, Lucifer has a horrible attention span (although clearly intelligent). I suppose you'd to have to be consistent with a character once you head in that direction, but it just wasn't entertaining for me at all.
