The story did develop into a very good way to open up the subject of divorce for children. I personally felt it was too young for the children I had hoped to gift it too. Their ages are nine and eleven. I also thought there was too much magic and hocus pocus to the story (looking into bath bubbles who acted as crystal balls to reveal the future, etc.) I thought it could have been more enjoyable, realistic and resulted in more honesty making the sincere connection over a deeplife change without that "magic reading the future aspect", however it did succeed in at last getting to an opening for a heart to heart talk between the parent (or caregiver) and child. The book has nice illustrations and an excellent final page of questions the child may have.
I'm neither a professional psychologist nor a specialist in divorce; but, having been divorced myself with two young children, I can say that I dearly wish this book had been published five years ago when we needed it. There is simply no other book like it available; and, with its beautiful picture and kind, welcoming story, all young children will open up to reading it with their parents. And, once they start reading, the issues and topics it evokes will allow children and parents to discuss the things that are upsetting to children during divorce.
The background story was not based on reality (bunnies traveling sliding on rainbows and other random magical things happening) which was disorienting and confusing at times, however I thought the way the topic of divorce was addressed was good. Overall I felt the story was not what I was hoping for.
Story is tooo long and wordy.. tried reading it to my children after our divorce conversation it was a disaster.. it won’t hold the attention of kids under 8
This is a very emotional and challenging topic and the author has successfully managed to deal with it using compassion, her stellar clinical psychological skills, and especially her heart. This beautifully illustrated picture book is narrated through the eyes of Zoey Bunny, an adorable little furry character, whose emotions are on a rollercoaster ride at the very thought of her parents getting a divorce. She sifts through questions like: Is it my fault? Why do I feel so sad angry and broken? Why are Mama and Daddy doing this? What will happen to me? and Is divorce forever?... just to name a few. Both her parents are there to answer these tough questions for their beloved daughter in terms that she can understand soothing her confused, worried mind and heart and easing that ever present sick feeling in her tummy. The book is a wonderful resource for any adult who is involved with a child going through such a traumatic experience in her life. The author has included a very helpful guide for the grown-ups as the book is introduced, and 20 questions at the back of the book for both adult and child to discuss together. This book is is highly recommended and would be a perfect resource for any therapist, parent, teacher, and all others working to aid children through this very difficult period in their lives.
With buzzwords such as divorce, separation, confused, and sad printed in all caps, Family Changes is an essential guide for divorcing and separating parents to discuss such issues with their children. The book utilizes a story format to explain divorce from the perspective of a young bunny. The feelings of the young bunny, the child of divorced parents, are very well explained in terms that can be understood by children.Family Changes also enables parents to understand how their children are affected by adult issues such as divorce and separation. The book opens with an introduction from the author explaining to parents how to use the story with their children. Family Changes also features a list of important questions often asked by children who are experiencing the divorce of their parents.Family Changes conveys to children that parents are sometimes happier apart and can in turn be better moms and dads to them without being married. Through the use of story, Family Changes takes a child-friendly approach toward talking about a tough topic.
I had the pleasure of reading Family Changes: Explaining Divorce To Children and was quite impressed. Azmaira Maker has covered the challenge of writing a book for children coping with divorce with sensitivity, awareness and a meaningful message that helps parents discuss this tough topic. As Founder of the Child-Centered Divorce Network I receive new books on divorce for children frequently. Too many fail short due to the complexity of the issues. This is a beautiful and refreshingly simple, yet compassionate book with the bonus of suggested questions for parents and professionals to discuss with the children. I can recommend this book enthusiastically!Rosalind Sedacca, CDCFounder, Child-Centered Divorce Network[...]
Many children experience divorce and hide away their emotions. Azmaira Maker’s Family Changes invites them to examine and question how they feel, through the story of a little rabbit whose parents are divorcing. The meanings of separation and divorce, the child’s feeling that it must be her fault, and the longing to make things right again are all given special prominence. But this is a fairytale of magic balls and feathers too, with pleasing bunny characters as well as a serious message. A fairytale with no fairytale ending perhaps, though Zoey learns that she can ask her questions, and there just might be answers that don’t make her stomach hurt.An introductory page for parents and a list of sample questions at the back complete the package, making the book a good tool for families experiencing divorce, as well as an enjoyable, innocent read.Disclosure I was given a copy and I offer my honest review.
