First let me say that overall this book is well-geared for children and adults alike. The content is excellent. HOWEVER there are HUGE printing errors that are massively confusing for one who actually reads the book and the moves closely.In the board depictions about taking the king the black king on the board is consistently illustrated as a white king in the move instructions. Particularly for young players still trying to figure out the notation system, this is highly confusing. I had to go through the book with a black pen and meticulously color-in the white king references that should have been black king references in the move instructions so that my grandsons wouldn't have whiplash from trying to figure out the book. This book has been in print since 2004. I am utterly shocked this has not been fully edited in the 2017 printing since this is the 12th reprinting of the book. Possibly this is a new error only in the 2017 re-print, but since I ordered this in December of 2017, it certainly seems someone would have noticed this and corrected it before...unless adults buy this book for kids to read and then wonder why the kids seem confused or turned off.The author or publisher definitely needs to address this problem. If the rest of the book wasn't really good or if I was not willing to go through and take about an hour to color in the move depictions, the best place for this book is the trash bin. The last thing I want to do for my grandchildren is to get them confused about chess if they take the time to read this book carefully. Very counter-productive.That said, with better key editing, this could be a very good book for kids.

I just received this book and have spent about an hour looking through it. I'd been intending to give it to my niece and two nephews (11, 9, & 5 yrs old) but after being initially charmed by the illustrations and impressed by its comprehensiveness, I'm now having second thoughts. As has been noted in some of the other reviews, there's a real disparity between the book's packaging and its reading level. The illustrations, typeface, and page size certainly look like those of a children's primer, but the text actually reads like a CliffsNotes guide to the game, with liberal use of "i.e." and chess jargon that is often under-explained, or as in the case of "control" and "develop", never defined at all. The problem is most acute in the final 20 pages, a rushed, confusing, and (I imagine) intimidating introduction to openings and strategy. Pedagogically, what really differentiates much of this book from more adult-oriented tutorials is its terseness. Topics that would typically rate four or five pages in a book like "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess" are condensed to one, with most of the explanation appearing as captions to arrow-filled diagrams.I suspect that publishers of children's books feel a need to keep their page counts down. Perhaps they think that expecting a nine-year-old to read more than a hundred pages about a topic like chess is just too much to ask. They might be right -- I don't know -- but the answer in that case is to market something that covers less of the game and in a more gentle fashion.

Better for older children with some experience playing chess.. I needed something for my 6 yr. old granddaughter who expressed an interest in learning the game and for a grandparent to help but who knows nothing about the game. I ordered a few books while waiting for my book order from Amazon and found the library had what I was looking for. The Kids Book of Chess by Harvey Kidder was perfect for us. It is my granddaughter's favorite because it is written like a storybook. That and Chess for Children by Nottingham, Wade, and Lawrence were most helpful to me and provided a way to start playing the game in installments so it's not so overwhelming. I wish I had checked out the library offerings first before buying on line.

This book is awesome. My husband bought it to teach our grandson some chess strategies. My husband read it before passing it to our grandson. They have both enjoyed reading it and BOTH have learned strategies and techniques! The book is well written and entertaining. My grandson has loved it!!

I bought this to teach a kindergartner how to play. As I worked through it, I found it easier and more effective to just teach him straight ahead.In other words, I walked him through the name and function of each piece. I explained the board and piece layout. I explained castling and en passant. He got it.The exercises are good, but I used the book for ideas and for a sense of curriculum. This book is well written for children. My seven year old grandsons are using it to help learn the game of chess. Someday they will be great!

I bought this to use with my 5 year old grand kid. It has some excellent illustrations, exercises, and games I can play with him. It is a very good tool I can use to help him, and myself better learn chess. Not a story book.

My 7 1/2 grandson is starting to learn how to play chess. He said he fines the book easy and helpful. I fine the book easy to understand.

This is an easy to read yet comprehensive history of Margaret Sanger and the birth control movement in the U.S. One of the many things I learned was that in the early part of the 20th century millions of American women died as the result of complications and infections from self-induced abortions. I learned Margaret Sanger was a courageous woman who fought ingrained ignorance her whole life and devoted it to helping woman have control over their own bodies. She is considered one of the great American women of the 20th Century and called by some "the great emancipator" for women.

Sanger has been maligned and vilified in the shadow of Catholicism, politics and male fear of women's abilities and contributions . Chesler seeks to right the scales of truth, documentation and justice. A worthy, scholarly read. Time lines are revisited to encompass world changes and complexities. Pay attention as dates change across the chapters that follow action and ideology.

Very thorough and well documented. At times it gets a bit bogged down with details, but it's a very good account of a most interesting woman who made a huge contribution to reproductive health.

Margaret Sanger (1879-1966) was born to an impoverished Roman Catholic family in Corning New York. Her family was large and she grew up A rebel against the strictures of late Victorian society. She never received a college degree, married a Jewish man named Bill Sanger by whom she had three children and moved to New York. Margaret became a left intellectual and became involved in birth control and family planning matters.She opened a birth control clinic in New York City and was jailed several times for these activities. Sanger also became an advocate of eugenics and believe n the superiority of the white race. Her life was unorthodox and she was sexually liberated. She had many lovers including such luminaries as Havelock Ellis, HG Wells and several others. Her marriage to an older man enabled her to enjoy wealth and the freedom of travel she enjoyed. She advocated the use of the diaphragm and condoms as well as other devices to prevent pregnancy. Sanger was an atheist who was a pretty Irish woman with red hair. She was a control artist who was tough and single sighted in her determination to make birth control a reality on the American scene. She is the undoubted champion of birth control advocates in American history. Chesler has written a good definitive biography of Margaret Sanger. The book also gives us a good overview of social views held by the American public in the first part of the twentieth century. Whether you like or admire the work of Sangster it is important to learn more about this important woman.

Meticulously researched and footnoted, this somewhat ponderous tome (about 670 pages including the notes and index) does not make for a quick beach read. It's fascinating to learn how very many of the rights modern women take for granted come from the work of this brave and dedicated woman, who began the movement and started the clinics that eventually morphed into Planned Parenthood, both in the USA and internationally.People - even doctors - didn't even TALK about the phrase (ssssh) BIRTH CONTROL a hundred years ago. Sanger changed that, brought an awareness of the need to offer women reproductive choices other than abstinence, too many babies, or illegal and risky abortions.Sanger's reputation has been much besmirched in the last few decades by those who hate that women are making their own choices as to when - or whether to become mothers. As Chesler presents her, Sanger was far from perfect; she made enemies as well as friends and supporters. She was loath to give up the glory/credit for work that others joined in as well. (Sanger may have been one of the earliest pioneers of name branding.)Redheaded, witty and attractive, she did not believe in monogamy (at least for herself) and engaged in countless affairs, including one with writer H.G. Wells, somehow managing it that none of her men became jealous of her other lovers or husbands; they were all happy, or at least content, having a tiny bit of her time and attention. Whether you believe this disgustingly immoral or not, it's still an amazing feat for anyone to pull off. She was not a good mother, neglecting her children for the cause of B.C.But she was not a supporter of Nazism, race eugenics, or racism - those are all LIES propagated by those with an axe to grind. She wasn't even really in favor of abortion, though she grudgingly agreed that in some cases there was a medical necessity.This book will inform you of all you ever wanted to learn about Margaret Sanger (and more), and if you have a question or wonder how or why the author interpreted something, it's all deeply footnoted. The ending feels a bit rushed; perhaps because the author was conscious of it already being a very long book, or perhaps because Sanger made less news and had fewer letters and interviews in her declining years following several heart attacks. Worth the read, for anyone interested in women's history.

It's a long biography, thoroughly researched. For that I'm grateful. I know I can rely on the information here. But, it does get to be a bit tedious of a read. Fortunately, the drive, dedication and determination of Ms. Sanger comes through all the minutia. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, but seldom indifferent, we pretty much find out who this woman was. Certainly she was a product of her times, as are we all, but also a champion of a most basic human right, to be free to control our own reproductive lives. I'm so glad to know Margaret Sanger and to have developed a deeper understanding of how precious reproductive freedom is.

There is a video game titled injustice. I have not played it. A few friends of mine said they read the first few issues of the comic adaption of it and that it was great. I decided to pick it up, despite my misgivings about reading a story based on a video game.It is good (volume 1 is very good). The story is worth 3.5 stars and the art is about 1.5 stars.Volume 1 begins with the Joker killing Lois Lane and blowing up Metropolis. Superman freaks out, kills the Joker and decides to change the world. Those last two lines happen in the very beginning, so this is not a spoiler. Eventually, Batman decides to move against Superman because a world dictator, no matter how benevolent, is still a world dictator. This story combines elements of Kingdom Come and the 1985 series Squadron Supreme.DC tends to work best when it's heroes fight each other (one only needs to look at the Dark Knight Returns, the upcoming Superman vs. Batman movie, the historic Superman vs Flash races or whenever someone goes bad (like Hal Jordan in the late 90's)).Volume 2 is not as good as the previous volume, but it helps move the story along. The story gets sidetracked a little with appearances by Darkseid and Lobo, but their involvement makes sense (they want to investigate the new world order on Earth). Luther has joined up with Superman, as has Damian Wayne. Both feel a bit awkward, though Luthor's support of Superman is harder to fathom and not explained well (the author could have done a much better job here...though I suspect Luthor still has a large part to play in this story). Except for another lame appearance by Harley Quinn, the rest of the DC villains have not shown up. Perhaps they are recoiling in fear because of the murder of the Joker and the defection of Luthor, but it does seem strange that they haven't made an appearance (or than Superman's attempted murder of them at Arkham in book 1).Near the end of book 2, Superman has an epic battle with Captain Atom. It's the highlight of this book.

Tom Taylor remains at the top of his game with the second volume of Injustice 2's comic series. With Superman defeated and imprisoned (and as we know from the game not due to get out until Brainiac shows up), Taylor delves into DC history for new super threats for Batman's team to face off against. Following after the first volume, the current threat is Ra's Al Ghul who has kidnapped the Suicide Squad and even allied himself with heroes like Vixen and Animal Man who have special bonds to nature. Opening with the funeral of Ted Kord and the marriage of Black Canary and Green Arrow (again?), things sour quickly when Ra's forces kidnap Conner Queen and the children of Black Lightning during the wedding. Batman and his team aim to get their loved ones back (including the newly revived Alfred) and to cut the head off Ra's operation. As this is Injustice, however, things don't go as the heroes expect. The book includes great character moments from multiple faces (including a great reintroduction to Ted Grant's Wildcat) but the absolute stars of the book have to be Plastic Man and his son. The sequence of Batman picking out Plas' son among all of his furniture is one of the best and reminds you that Taylor has a great handle on these characters.

I generally have a hard time getting into comics. I like it as an art form and I think it's a cool medium for spinning fictional tales, but it is also a really confusing and unapproachable form of entertainment, even with all of the re-branding DC has recently done in order to make their stories more inviting to new readers. So when I decided to try the first volume of the INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US comic series and found it delightfully well done and remarkably accessible, I of course had to continue on by picking up the Kindle version of the second half of Year One. INJUSTICE is kind of formatted like a television show in that it works in seasons (they refer to them as years). There is no mention of this being Year One until the very back cover in this volume, but that is probably because the addition of subsequent seasons/years was contingent on the first's success. At this point there are two more volumes out for Year Two and I believe there are issues released within Year Three. This might sound a tad confusing, but it's really not, especially if you buy by the volume and not by singular issues.Effectively, the final issue of VOL. 1 was kind of like the explosive mid-season finale of a TV drama. It collected issues 1-6 of the Year One sequence. VOL. 2 includes issues 7-12, plus the INJUSTICE ANNUAL issue which essentially functions as a thirteenth issue and a very intense wrap up to the Year One Story arch.NOTE: While I won't delve into any major spoilers for VOL.2, I will be discussing things that happened within the previous volume, so please do not read on if you wish to avoid spoilers for the first six issues of the comic series.CHARACTERSThis was one of my favorite aspects of the first six issues and it continues to be absolutely amazingthis time around. The main cast is back with Batman, Superman, Green Arrow Wonder Woman, Flash, and the rest of the Justice League taking the lead in most situations. Other characters like Catwoman and Harley Quinn are other welcome returners and then there are all the new faces as well as more focus given to characters that resided in the story's background.At the end of issue 6, there were a number of characters that are teased as becoming part of Team Batman. Among them are Black Canary, Black Lightning, Atom, Huntress, and Batwoman. Some of these are used better than others in these seven issues. Batwoman, Huntress, and Black Lightning can be seen in most of the issues, but they are very fringe, background sort of characters. With such an enormous cast, it is completely understandable that some characters do not get as much attention as others and it was really just pretty rewarding to see these characters show up in this volume, even if only in a couple of bad-ass action shots. Other characters, Like Alfred and Robin get some really compelling sequences that were easily some of the highlights for me in this series. I can't even tell you about Alfred's part in the annual issue because it is just too good! If you're an Alfred fan like I am, then you have to read this and find out what I'm talking about because he is simply amazing here.Other new characters were a bit of a pleasant surprise. Martian Manhunter and Lobo are two characters that appeared in the game as DLC fighters. While you could purchase and play as them, they didn't actually have any role within the game's story so it was very cool to see them play a part in the comic. Martian Manhunter in particular, was a really welcome presence for some reasons that I can't really express without spoiling things. Lobo is more of a one-hit-wonder type of character. He shows up in an issue pretty much dedicated to him, which was neat since he fancies himself as the "Main Man." It's in this same issue that Harley Quinn comes out of the woodwork after only making minor cameos in some of the other issues. Having her back and battier than ever was a really welcome aspect of the Lobo issue and seeing her team up with Black Canary and Green Arrow was beyond priceless. Then there is the introduction of Lex Luthor and the return of Mr. and Mrs. Kent. All three of these characters contribute a great deal to the story's plot and were used in some really interesting ways that I wish I could go into.While it was nice to see so many of the more minor personalities get their time in the light, the main focus on Superman's decent into madness and Batman's cold, calculating efforts to stop him are not at all lost in the shuffle. The heart-wrenching conflict only grows fiercer as both sides fight for what they think is right. By the end of this volume, that conflict comes to its ultimate head in a way that I found utterly stunning.WORLD/SETTINGIn my previous review, I expressed hopes that the setting for the narrative would become a bit more interesting. I am happy to report that my anticipation was fulfilled in every way that I could hope for. The world is now largely under Superman's control and while he does not yet rule with absolute authority at the beginning of the volume, he certainly becomes the almighty dictator by the end. What marks the setting of this collection is the conflict between the two hero camps. There's Batman and his followers who believe that humanity has a right to rule themselves and then there are Superman's underlings who think what they are doing is the correct course of action. Then there are those who have picked a side, but are not necessarily sold on which one is correct. Flash, Shazam, and even some of Batman's followers all question the correctness of their leaders actions which really helps convey the fact that the world is now a battleground despite Superman's best efforts to forcibly instill peace. It's still a rather traditional comic-booky setting with lost of sprawling cityscapes and plenty of secret lairs, but the distopic mood of it all is what makes it feel so unique and memorable. By the final panels of this volume, there is reason to believe that these classic locals will seem even less familiar during Year Two.PLOT/TONESince the very first issue of this series, the narrative has been steeped in blood. We witnessed the death of Lois, the murder of the Joker, and the catastrophic disaster that killed nearly every living soul in Metropolis. The story has been pretty heavy ever since, but the issues that followed in the first volume were a bit less fatal than the premier. That's not so much the case here. Many of the characters I knew would die because of the game's campaign mode were killed off within the first volume. That left only one outstanding. I won't say who it is, but that person does get axed from the story in a really brutal way that felt genuinely heart-breaking. I also know who survives these events and makes it into the game, but there are a lot of characters in this comic that don't show up in the game's story, nor are they ever mentioned. This left me with a lot of question marks in terms of what would happen to these other characters. Are they being saved for an appearance in the game's inevitable sequel or are they going to be removed from the equation? There really isn't any effective way of guessing who stays and who goes, but what I can say is that each death felt really epic and impactfull this time around. Whereas moments like Nightwing's demise felt all to rushed in VOL. 1, the killings here got the treatment that they deserved.What's somehow even more brutal than all the death is the mere back and forth between the two sides. Both Superman AND Batman do some pretty shocking things in order to get their way. These men are getting desperate and they make some very interesting leadership choices that don't break from their character, but did leave me in bit of shock. Batman can be inexplicably cold to those both on his side and those who are not, while Superman's flaming temper only gets worse and somehow more child-like as the story goes on. This is the conflict that the first six comics alluded to and it's one that I don't think I'll forget anytime soon.CONCLUSIONI really couldn't have asked for anything more from this volume. I've openly admitted that I am no comics expert, but for me, VOL. 2 contained everything I ever wanted from a comic series. I gave the previous volume a 4/5 because I did have some issues with the pacing of certain parts as well as the overuse of tiny comic panels that looked a little ugly. This volume is entirely devoid of either of those issues and just seems to nail things at every turn.I can't really give this series enough praise. For me, it has become a sort of benchmark by which I will judge any other comic or graphic novel that I read. It's emotionally raw and utterly tragic in some spots. The action shots are breathtaking and the artwork in general is just astounding. This is easily the most beautiful piece of graphic fiction that I have ever read and it is one that moved me throughout all seven issues, often in ways that surprised me. If you haven't gotten into this series yet, then you definitely should, especially if you're like me and have tried in vain to get into the world of comics. You may not be completely sold after reading through the first volume (I wasn't 100% myself), but after reading through this one, there is very little doubt that I will be reading every issue that this series comes out with.

I collected graphic novels since I was five and owned nearly every original comic there was from the beginning. Then in 1985 two graphic novel series came out which I decided couldn't be topped. I usually favored Marvel but when The Dark Knight and The Watchmen came out, I read, collected and stopped buying until "Injustice: Gods Among Us" was released.I sold my collection several years ago and am pleased they are now available in digital format. I'm sure there has been plenty of great novels released in the past thirty years which I look forward to catching up on.

I'm fairly critical of the things I spend my money on. This book was everything I wanted and more. I read it in three days. There is so much valuable information in this book. I have a little more direction in my life because of it, and I strongly recommend this book to anybody that suspects that they may be an Empath. There is not enough information regarding this subject, but this book does a great job of explaining what it is, and ways of dealing with it. I wish I could give it more than five stars.

I am only two chapters into this book but felt compelled to write the review because there is such pertinent information in this book that will absolutely help you on your journey to understanding yourself and your purpose in this life. I am a Geomantic Flora claircognizant emotional hybrid empath, I needed to know how to protect my energy because I kept taking things home with me. we never realize how contagious people's energies are and how subceptable we are to it as empaths and we need boundaries and ways of knowing how to protect ours and differentiate our energy from others. This book has all the answers you will need.

This book is incredible. I have never known about most of these techniques and they helped me get past so much pain and emotional garbage. I feel better than I have in years and I can not thank the author enough for writing this. I can not recommend this book enough.

This book definitely opened my eyes up and educated me in regards to how to protect my energy. I absolutely loved reading this book and have shared the book with friends. It’s easy to understand as well. Thank you for taking time to write such a wonderful book to help all empaths!

Many books are limited in perspective and tools. This book is good for those still questioning if they're an empath as well as those along all stages of the journey. Wish I had this when I was starting out, yet I found some new things to explore.

Excellent book! I have read it and purchased it for several others. I just discovered I was an Empath Aug 2017... We are like sponges that absorb everyone's energy...self-care is #1. This book gives all the ins and outs. This book will not disappoint <3

I was introduced to a friend of a friend and within minutes of talking she said you are an empath. I had no idea what this was and she told me to order this book. After reading it things made sense as to why I act and feel the way I do and why people are drawn to me. Eye opener

I’ve read a few empath books and I was surprised this one was better than I was expecting! The authors have a great blog and that’s how I heard about the book. However, they aren’t professionals so I didn’t expect a 5 Star but something lead me to purchase it and I’m glad I did. Very well organized and provides practical steps to help an empath lead a happier life and minimize situations that are draining. The authors are empaths themselves, so they get it!
