The book contains some interesting information, but quite some writing seems to have the purpose to fill the pages. Lengthy description what apparel, hair, beard, etc. the researcher has, isn't relevant stuff. I would have considered interviews with women a more interesting subject.

Lots of questions but few answers. This is not the Authors fault of course, the subject matter is not well funded and attracts few takers. The book is well written and I believe that most lay people will find it easy enough to follow. I know that I learned a lot and would love to learn more.

As a single man, the insight into the sexuality of women in this book is a little startling. But, better to know the truth than live in an imaginary world. The scientific evidence to back up what is being put forth is convincing. A great read... riveting...

More attention to modern psychoanalytic theory rather than just rellying on antique Freud would have strengthened the book.

In 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland Hitler's Luftwaffe had a strength of nearly 8,500 fighters and bombers. The US Army air corps had barely 1/5th that number. Patton's Second Armored brigade had only 325 tanks while the Germans had more than 2,000. There were only 334,000 men in the total US armed forces. The US army ranked 18th largest in the world with about 190,000 men just ahead of Holland and behind Hungary and Romania. Time Magazine said "the US Army looked like a few nice boys with BB guns." There was no Military Industrial Complex, the USA was not a superpower and about 3/4's of the population supported isolationism and the preservation of peace at all cost.From July 1940 to VJ day in August 1945 the United States produced a staggering $183 billion in arms. America's shipyards launched 141 aircraft carriers, eight battleships, 807 cruisers, destroyers and destroyer escorts, 203 submarines and almost 52 million tons of merchant shipping. US factories turned out 88,410 tanks, 257,000 artillery pieces and 640,000 Jeeps. The United States produced 324,750 aircraft averaging 170 per day since 1942. Nearly 10 million American men and women would serve their country in uniform.The United States, by the end of the war, had the best equipped fighting force on the planet. Moreover, through the lend lease program the United States had supplied many of the arms needs of Britain, the Soviet Union and other allied forces.How did this remarkable transformation take place? FDR was wise enough to recognize that the power of American business, more often than not led by those who opposed him politically, needed to be harnessed in order to win the war. Freedom's Forge shows how FDR reached out to Bill Knudsen, a Danish American and the President of General Motors, to spearhead the wartime production effort. Knudsen served as the head of the Office of Production Management and brought an experienced manufacturers' vision to the problem of producing war material.Herman documents many of the American production achievements that led to victory in World War II. In Freedom's Forge we learn about the unsung and nearly forgotten production heroes such as Bill Knudsen, Henry Kaiser and others that put the USA on a path to a rapid build-up of industrial production.It was the free market that enabled America to gear up for war so effectively. Herman writes, "Production, however, remained an entirely voluntary process. The War Production Board could and did order companies not to produce things: new cars, for instance, and refrigerators and other heavy durable goods, It never told anyone what to make. That was left to the imagination of American business. This was how Bill Knudsen had designed things from the start, and it remained the pivot point of the entire wartime system. Everything made for the war effort was made by those who saw some advantage for themselves in doing so, and therefore they brought all their skills and tools and knowledge to bear on the task--both to help the country and to make some money...Nor was it entirely a coincidence that no other wartime economy depended more on free enterprise incentives than America's, and that none produced more of everything in quality and quantity, both in military and civilian goods."American business showed remarkable flexibility during the war. The famous carmaker Henry Ford, who was an ardent isolationist before Pearl Harbor and despised FDR's New Deal, built the massive Willow Run production facility to crank out B-24 aircraft. Henry Kaiser, who had specialized in road construction projects before the war, became a massive ship and aircraft builder. Kaiser led the "Six Companies" that produced thousands of Liberty Ships that ferried men and equipment to the war zones. Kaiser had one Liberty ship built in an astonishing 4 days, fifteen hours and twenty-six minutes. Winston Churchill declared, "The foundation of all our hopes and schemes was the immense shipbuilding program of the United States."Not all US casualties in World War II served in the military; many were from the world of work and business. Morrison Knudsen (another "Six Companies" member) had employees serving alongside US Marines in the defense of Wake Island in December 1941. A Japanese amphibious force was dispatched to capture the island in late 1941. Many of these MK engineers fought, were killed or wounded, and were captured and spent years in Japanese POW camps. Thousands of civilian merchant mariners aboard Liberty ships lost their lives particularly as a result of Nazi U-boats in the North Atlantic. On December 30th, 1942 Boeing's best civilian test pilot, Eddie Allen, was killed with the rest of his crew while test-flying a B-29 which crashed near Boeing field in Seattle. Boeing later sorted out the issues with the B-29 and the "Superfortress" bomber; these planes ignited Japanese cities with incendiary bombs (developed by Kaiser) and delivered the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Arthur Herman's fine book is not without a few flaws. Herman writes that Hap Arnold "was the only senior military or civilian leader to oppose dropping the atomic bomb." Yet in Eisenhower's own book Mandate for Change, he recalls a Potsdam conference encounter with Henry Stimson, the head of the War Department, where he "voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives." However, during the last two years of the war, the US overtook them in a big way and made war equipment faster than all the Axis powers combined. We were also able to supply our Allies with much of what they needed; especially England and Russia.Many history books have characterized these men (such as William Knudsen and Henry Kaiser, among others) as robber barons. The American system of mass production, emphasizing accuracy of production parts so that they were interchangeable with ANY of the units instead of just one, was far superior, and ultimately resulted in production numbers that were astounding.I really enjoyed this book, and now see a lot of big industrial projects differently, as those are discussed in the book as well. There were heroes in those days, and not all of them wore uniforms.

Thought provoking concept with poor execution. At every possible turn Duncan attempts to impress the reader with his vocabulary, overly dramatic expression of the simple and grandiose intellect. Entire paragraphs and pages are filled with endless metaphors and similes, each attempting to out dramatize it's predecessor. Any sparks of enjoyment that could be achieved by the reader are quickly extinguished by Duncan's inability to just tell the tale without interjecting overindulgent attempts to impress the reader with his intellect. Multiple times I found myself bored and disinterested with the direction and interactions of the story. This is my first Glen Duncan work and although I am willing to investigate another work, I would not recommend this book.

The language. I have to begin with the language of this book, the captivating voice of the narrator, the unique cadence of the prose. I would find it worthwhile for that alone. What further amazed me is the fact that, up until the very last sentence, I didn't know how it would end. You can't put the last several pages down (and the rest of them are pretty difficult to set aside). There's a glimpse of a world that makes a very different sort of sense from the old mythologies we know and love, a world that flows logically from their tales when one accounts for the lens of history, but a world that manages to use those tales to turn what we usually know on its head. This is my favorite type of story, and the author does it impeccably.

At first, the book seemed to hold promise that things would get better, but instead it only worsened.Maybe the author was trying to show that after millennia of pain and suffering, Lucifer has a horrible attention span (although clearly intelligent). His style of writing makes you feel like you are experiencing all the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes with him. I've bought other Frommer's books, but this is the first that has disappointed me. We used it for our recent trip to Bermuda- lovely island by the way- but found the information in the book lacking. We ate at two highly recommended spots and were hugely disappointed in them both (I don't think it's fair to name them as it's possible, we just hit an off night). We also tried two other spots, The Point and Port O Call, both of which we loved (we especially enjoyed The Point- impeccable service and delicious food!). But when you're on vacation and have a limited amount of time you don't want to like half your meals - you want to love them all! I feel like we could have basically guessed and / or asked around and wound up with a better success rate.Also, Bermuda has so many amazing things to do that are free, it's a shame this isn't highlighted in the book. We took the most lovely walking tour of the City of Hamilton and another amazing tour of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) that we both free and top highlights of our trip. And we really enjoyed walking parts of the railway trail (as did others staying at our resort), so I feel the book could have expanded more on that as well. I actually think visiting Bermuda is a lot like visiting DC. There's a ton of stuff to do regardless of your budget. You can take a free tour or get a $300 massage, and either way you'll have a blast. It's unfortunate that the book does not highlight these amazing free experiences. Deciding to go to Bermuda can be inexpensive- but you wouldn't know it from reading this book.One more thing! I was so so so disappointed that the book recommended renting mopeds on the island when the average tourist fatality rate is 46 people per year (and that's just fatalities, not injuries). Every single local we spoke to said it was simply crazy for tourists to get on those bikes given the roads (crazy narrow and curvy) and the fact that the drive on the opposite side (left). We left the mopeds to the silly tourists and relied on the amazing bus, ferry, and occasional cab. If you're still leaning towards a moped, chat with your taxi driver about this on the way to your hotel.

As always, you can't go wrong with a Frommer's guide. Anytime my wife and I go on a cruise or vacation, we buy a Frommer's guide and thoroughly research it. They have proven invaluable in identifying hotels, restaurants, and attractions. We tend to avoid the more touristy aspect of vacation destinations, and the Frommer's guides can accommodate people who like touristy things and those who don't. The maps are also quite handy. As to this specific guide, this will be my third cruise to Bermuda, and I hadn't purchased a guide the last two times. The book provides good information regarding what to do at the time of year we'll be traveling. As an aside, I've never seen a guide book that basically said "if you are gay, there are better places to go". From what I understand, Bermuda is quite intolerant of homosexuals, I've just never seen a guide book state it so bluntly. Better to find something like that out from an inexpensive guidebook than after you've paid to travel.

I favor the Frommer guides and this one was extremely helpful in helping us plan our week in Bermuda last summer. We used it for everything. I would definitely recommend it but here's an important tip. First check the publication date in the front. If the guide is more than one year old, it may not be up-to-date and sometimes Frommer doesn't update its guide. We travelled to Bermuda in 2013. We never travel without a guidebook. If the publication date is appropriate, the Frommer guide should work for you.

Bermuda is such an easy place to get around, we probably didn't need a guidebook at all. That said, this is a decent one, although we could have used more information on the beaches. We took a cab to a recommended beach, only to find there was nothing there but beach - no restaurants, no bathrooms, no nothing. That was ok - but if the book had told us which ones had services, that would have been nice, since we planned to spend the entire day there with our kids. We went to a restaurant that was recommended, and it was good, but as we didn't go to another one, we have nothing to compare it to. But, we felt comfortable that we didn't miss anything in our short time in Bermuda since we had read through the guide first.

Frommer's Guide to Bermuda was very helpful in planning our trip. It enabled us to understand the geography and to pick out where we would like to stay. It was highly useful in its coverage of restaurants and spots to visit. The warnings were valuable, and while many never occurred, at least we were prepared. The Customs people on entry could not have been any nicer and there was no problem at all in bringing prescription medications into the country. The cab ride from the airport was high, but at least we knew what to expect. Given the price of gas there, it is understandable. And it was helpful to have obtained some Bermudan dollars before we went, although US dollars seem to be accepted most everywhere. All in all, we are very glad that we purchased Frommer's Guide.

Frommers Bermuda is a good basic book that gives info on prominent hotels, prominent restaurants and any sightseeing spots. But, it does not help much for those on a budget. Bermuda is an island for the very wealthy. Even those renting housekeeping units must buy groceries that are well beyond what we pay in the States. The guide should warn people about that. It would be better if the book had made some suggestions as to how to eat fairly simply ( ex: buy pre-made foods in grocery stores-hot buffets), or foods you might bring with you to cut expenses. It also should make a point of telling people that car rentals are not allowed(may have done this) and scooter rental is now dangerous because of much increased traffic.One must take a cab ( big expense) or learn the bus system which is a very good way to get around. Such hints as these would be helpful. If money is no object than these suggestions aren't important. But, a complete tourist guide should help all travelers know what awaits them.

I am using this book in my eighth grade social studies class, although I think I will not assign the chapters on alien intelligence or art. [Not because they are not interesting, but because it is too far a stretch for them to work into the class questions.] I think this version of the book will be challenging and accessible for my 13-14 year-old students, and I am hopeful it will supplement healthy class discussions. I can follow up after I have used it a few months....I am not sure most kids would pick up this book on their own [and arguably those who would might be able to handle the adult version], but I am so thankful to have salient thought and good non-fiction writing available to all my middle school students.A good book for the tween/teen who is ready to think deeply about big issues, while not ready for adult social science verbosity quite yet.

Jared Diamond is a renaissance man. His knowledge of medicine, paleontology, ornithology, and conservation make his point of view fascinating.His ideas, theories and conclusions about human evolution are eyeopeners.We are simply a evolved and special chimpanzee with innate natural tendencies such as killing others of our own species. On the other hand, that specialness also allows us to create communicate with complex language and create radios.Kudos Diamond!

A must read for young and old. We are the potentially our own destroyers or the saviour our planet. Thank you Mr Diamond

Very interesting and very well written as always with Jared Diamond. Well structured and reader-friendly. You never get confused with him as he is always so clear and takes very good and funny examples to help understanding. Beside, he knows what he is talking about, an expert in his field. I would call him a great disciple of Darwin's theory of evolution.

An insightful, and thought provoking look at the subject of the title. Every politician and world leader should be made to read this book.

Tilapia and Spinach Roll-ups with Shallot and White Wine SauceServes 4; 3 ounces fish per servingMild-flavored tilapia, which blends so nicely with other foods, is complemented here with baby spinach leaves and a topping of crushed walnuts.Ingredients4 tilapia fillets (about 4 ounces each)1/4 teaspoon salt Pepper to taste5 ounces fresh baby spinach leaves1/2 cup shredded or grated Parmesan cheese1 cup dry white wine (regular or nonalcoholic), plus more as needed1/2 cup fat-free, low-sodium chicken broth or low-sodium vegetable broth, plus more as needed1 medium shallot, minced2 tablespoons walnuts, crushedTo Prepare Preheat the oven to 375°F.Rinse the tilapia and pat dry with paper towels. Place the fish on a flat surface. Sprinkle the fish with the salt and pepper. Place the spinach on the fish. Sprinkle with the Parmesan. Starting at a short end, roll each fillet jelly-roll style. Secure each roll-up with a wooden toothpick. My main objective in purchasing this book was to get me on tract with my cholesterol as well as drop about 10-15 pounds. The first thing I learned was that my portions were way out of line - I had no idea! I like the fact that it offers variations to follow in your diet plan as well as different calorie counts (1200; 1600; 2000) depending on your size & gender. This is no quick fix, but a lesson in how to change your eating habits. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that for me it used way too much refined sugar & flour products. Very few breakfast selections fall into the savory category, most were sweet. For someone who is used to eggs & bacon for breakfast, dried cherry fruit bread, fruit smoothies, & cereal just don't cut it!I did lose weight - 4 lbs. in one month, but have not been able to keep it off. So, I am starting over. I will still use this book as it has the portion control, calorie count that I need, but I wish it had less refined sugar & flour products & more whole grain, savory options.

This is a logical, practical approach, that puts the responsibility on you to change your lifestyle. Losing weight and increasing fitness are not magical. In each area, diet and fitness, they suggest three basic techniques for acheiving your goal, and explain how to decide which technique to use, or mix and match them. For instance, the %75 percent rule has you simply eat %75 sized portions of everything you already eat. Or you could make their recipes. Or do a little of both.Same thing with fitness: are you better suited for the group dynamic of a class, or maybe all you can muster us to increase the work involved in what you are already doing in your life? Or like me, can make a gym date once a week if you're lucky, so need to fill in with more trips up and downstairs with an extra load od laundry.Lot's of good advice for those of us who lack the resources for the gym, or the time to count every calorie that comes across the plate.

Personally Way more complicated than Weight watchers. Also I have an APP on my phone that tracks calories and exercise and water intake and at the end of the day shows what my diet looked like as in carbs sodium and sugars and fats.

This is a great educational cook book with simple recipes that are heart healthy. If you are looking for pratical weight loss tips using real food not fads or processed crap. this is the book to get.

No hassle getting it. I discovered I already had a hard back newer edition on my library shelf, but that was my error, not yours. I should have checked the copyright date, and previous printings. It is good information anyway, and I will give the copy I just received to the first person I see at my cardiologist's office. I haven't had time to see where the newer copy I already own differs from the older copy you just sent me.

I have tried most of the fad diets and the bottom line is that eliminating food groups is not sustainable or healthy. The key is to eat reasonable amounts of healthy food, with occasional indulgences and move more to get to a healthy weight, a healthy feeling and a healthy lifestyle. This book makes it very clear and gives a lot of how- to's to help you accomplish that. It also tells you that it is not easy and is very realistic about that.

A "diet" book that is realistic, based in science, full of common sense and patient with those of us who have struggle with weight for a lifetime. If you want to know what the book really is, read the title.

Since our Doctor told us to get on the Heart diet, I bought this cookbook to add to my others. I have many.Simple to follow receipes. I have focused on the seafoods. Been great so far.Tucson, Az
