My husband and I fell in love with DK (especially the Smithsonian line) during a trip to the Smithsonian museums. The books are filled with an immense amount of information which is presented in a fascinating, readable way. Of course the author couldn't include absolutely every single detail about the subject at hand, but they still did a wonderful job. The photos are gorgeous and a perfect complement to the information being presented. The books themselves have sturdy binding and stout construction.

We gave this book to our 8 year old for his birthday. He absolutely LOVES it and spends hours looking at the pictures and reading. It is big and heavy, so not ideal for traveling, but a treasure to keep at home, to be enjoyed for a long time or use as a reference! Awesome.

He's an early reader and so he definitely loved the book! Raved about one of the inventors that he had read about in a different book. Wonderful as a child's encyclopedia on a special topic!

I bought this for my 3 year old grandson. He loves it and sits for long periods of time just looking at it and naming the pictures.

Osamu Tezuka (1928-89) is the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He originally intended to become a doctor and earned his degree before turning to what was then a medium for children. I had no issues reading this on both a Kindle Paperwhite and an Android phone. It's set in an odd format though: each page is read from left to right, but the book overall is read from right to left.After a promising set up, this manga quickly becomes boring. The art is just too cartoony and childish, though ironically there is nudity and violence on every page. The plot wastes too much time with shonen antics and Buddha himself is not even in most of the book. It's an interesting concept that was poorly executed.

Many people are most familiar with Tezuka through his 1960's anime TV shows, Astro Boy or Kimba, the White Lion as those are the works that received the widest world distribution. Those shows were inventive with strong references to Disney but also a jarring sense of anarchy. Many of Tezuka's manga stories are the same plus he frequently breaks the fourth wall especially during scenes of high drama with goofy comic slapstick or having his characters tear up the comic panels to express rage. What I found amazing was that unlike others authors Tezuka didn't feel that he needed to change his style when tackling the story of Buddha and this takes some getting used to. In later volumes Tezuka actually puts himself into the story questioning the liberties he's taking.After I got past the anachronisms (characters referring to modern products) and the attempts to use modern idiom (example: the use of the phrase "my peeps"), it was hard to put the book down. In fact I read a volume a day. Tezuka draws the way he feels like and that means that the characters range from classic semi-realistic manga to Japanese comic style to pure Disney (especially the crocodiles) all against realistically drawn backgrounds. The female characters are almost always drawn half-naked, just like Indian sculpture and paintings from that period. It may be a little hard for the Western senses to have semi-naked women involved with serious religious discussion but that's our problem not the story. The dialog is in the percussive manga style but the ideas of Buddhism are there and you can follow the road of Buddha's conflicts as he reaches his final philosophy.

This series was recommended to me by a friend in Chennai, a biophysics professor whose daughter read the books, and who stumbled into it through her. He found Tezuka's Buddha series engaging, anachronistic, humorous, bizarre, gripping, and somehow also capturing the enormous spiritual and intellectual ferment and tumult of India in those far-off days, a vitality now almost entirely dissipated.I was not terribly familiar with the details of the Buddha story, and knew Tezuka only through his Tetsuwan Atomu ("Iron-armed Atom", aka "Astro Boy") and so I took it up.I found the series a compelling read, going straight through Vol 1-8 in about three days. I can sympathize with the reviewer who found it bizarre and disturbing; reference by 6th BC Indians to the New York Yankees baseball season does rather pull one up. Somehow though, and quite remarkably, Tezuka's innocence(?)/irreverence(?) succeeds in thoroughly humanizing Gautama Buddha, making both him & his times tangible and vivid and real. This is definitely not hagiography. Nor is it Herman Hesse-style adorational poetry. It is, however, wonderful and dynamic storytelling.

I have just finished reading the complete series for the third time. I am always amazed how Tezuka managed to make a book about Buddha which is funny, touching and without pandering for religious groups. It is just the amazing journey of a man to find within himself the promise of peace and self preservation.Tezuka has made the book very witty, and even adlibs here and there with funny characters. If you want to add some variety to your reading, this final series by the brilliant master of drawing, scripting and framing, Osamu Tezuka is strongly recommended.Just read it for fun, without too much of an expectation, or looking to find flaws in the book, since it is linked to a man that becomes enlightened and starts a religion. Tezuka does not proselytize. He was at the end of his life, when writing this series, so he could care less. The series is fresh, and has some innocence to it, a quality that is so hard to find these days... I am sorry if the review sounds very one-dimensional, but I had never read anything by Tezuka, and this series was one of the best comic book series I have ever read.

This is a great book, but the Kindle edition DOES NOT WORK. Don't waste your money buying this for Kindle. Literally ALL that opens is the title page, the book cover, and the table of contents. Such a rip-off, and returning a Kindle book is very difficult.

We've been reading the eight volumes from beginning to end in our Tezuka fever. Buddha certainly feels like a major work and I would recommend it both as a dedicated approach to the figure of Buddha and as classic of storytelling. But Buddha is most importantly enjoyable to see Tezuka developing some of his most irreverent and personal jokes, interwoven in story.However, given the subject it lacks the sensationalist and gripping (if repetitive) taste of some of his one mammoth serialized volumes such as MV or the Ode to Kirihito. Buddha is published in English in 8 volumes and things really take shape towards volume 3 or 4, and become quite amazing in terms of the medium towards the final part. If you are not in for the full ride I'd probably recommend other works from him.

This series started very strong with books I and II. The third book wasn't as good, but it kept the momentum going. Then book IV happened and almost ruined it for me. For some reason the well crafted personalities for the main characters were changed for no apparent reason.Thankfully the series started to get back on track with book V, and it finally got back to greatness with the final book. Paul Kemp is a very good writer. He was able to restore the feel, ambience, and character development of the series without appearing too jarring. He also managed to write some of the most exciting battle scenes in the genre.There are some very surprising plot twists and the ending will leave you cheering or fuming depending on who your favorite characters are.Overall, I highly recommend this book and the series as a whole.

I must be honest and say I was disappointed with the last 2 books in the series. It got off to such a fun and strong start, but seemed to just die out after the middle book. The remaining plot felt stretched with filler and build-up but with no substantial climax. Worth a read to finish the series, but I would not rate this as one of my favorite series.

Paul Kemp is a usually great writer, but this book is a bit of a letdown. It starts off well and directly introduces a new party to the plot, which then completely disappears and doesn't come back until the final pages. Between those two sections, well, the book has enough quality to keep you reading, but it's does so pretty straightforwardly without any on-your-toes moments.Some issues I had with this book (warning... possible spoilers):1. It repeats the same situations and behaviors over and over between Jeggred/Danifae/Pharaun and Quentel to the point where it becomes annoying.2. The climax that was being worked to is very anticlimactic. There's no explanation of why Lolth moved, why she's picking her chosen, or anything else for that matter.3. The "inflation" of the characters' power becomes annoying. I understand you need to pit them against foes and that they should feel sufficiently interesting, but there must be other ways to accomplish that than by summoning and controlling the most powerful demons that exist, by destroying an army of 500+, etc. Sometimes less is more.4. The re-conversion of Hallistra is treated matter-of-factly and it seems the entire Eilistraee angle is thrown out the window to focus on Lolth again. Whereas Vhaeraun was treated as a powerful god in a previous book and his priests were dangerous foes, this book portrays the clergy of Eilistraee as weak and pathetic. OK, I understand Lolth is a big shot, but really, let's not ridicule other gods to the point where they appear completely inept?

The reader was great! She was clear and was so consistent with her voices that I was able to tell which character was speaking without being explicitly told. The story line was captivating, but felt a little drawn out. Unfortunately, the ending was spoiled for me by outside parties, so I don't know whether or not it would have been surprising otherwise.

Overall:The story is fairly predictable but moves slowly. The detail of the combat engagement were very detailed, so much slow the reader begs for them to be over. The story reads like a bad D&D game filled with silly power gamers...lots of combat but little thought or character development. The characters are so super powerful, the reader can not believe the characters are really going to get killed....Please try writing stories about characters not up to their eyeballs in magic items and spells...vulnerable characters make things much more interesting.The pacing of the book is slow due to all of the combat and spell casting sequences. The art of story telling has been confused with combat and writing a lot of pages. The book could have been reduced to something a quarter the length with the same effect; it would have been more cost effective for the author.Since Lolth is a goddess of Chaos, you would think the new incarnation of Lolth would be different in some way...but alas the reader is cheated. The author at several points try to say that chaotic individuals are highly predictable due to their chaotic nature. This is just plain wrong -- look up the definition of chaotic:(1) completely unordered and unpredictable and confusing(2) of or relating to a sensitive dependence on initial conditionsThe punishment of Halisstra is probably fitting given the fact she could not make up her mind to save her life...literally. In fact, it would have been truly chaotic of Lolth have chosen her not Danifae (who was the obvious choice if you wanted Lolth to stay the same post resurrection).The characterization of good in the book is very naive. Why does everyone equate good with stupidity and naivete? TRUST BUT VERIFY! This type of portrayal is quite annoying especially when the evil people are falling over themselves to harm each other at the first possible opportunity. I guess the two views go hand and hand; otherwise, intelligent good characters working together would wipe out the evil, stupid characters in a heart beat.Summary:Characteristizations: Very weakStory telling: Poor to fairPlot: Weak

I read all previous five books so I had to finish. I was warned I may not like ending and...I didn't. There was a confusing section about 2/3 through, but reading through I figured out what the author was going for with the chapter. You may not like it, but I just had to read for myself.

Probably the hardest book out of the six to finish. I actually just breezed through the last 1/4 of the book due to being absolutely bored out of my mind with the story line. Disappointing ending to what started out to be a great series.

While I have enjoyed all the previous books in this series, this one had some interesting twists and turns. The characters were well developed and fun to follow. And this book is good at keeping you on the edge waiting for more.

This is an incredible book! Accessible to those who aren't familiar with design theory and a valuable resource to anyone thinking about how we should go forward given the ecological crisis we face. There is no question we need to redesign society and Escobar provides brilliant analysis of methodologies and insightful questions to think through as we do so. I highly recommend this book!

Im 1/3 of my way through this and it works well as a guide.The labs utilize AWS “free tier” which isnt “free”.Make sure you turn off/delete anything you create in the labs immediately following completion or you could be stuck with a huge bill before you know it!I made it a point to log into the billing console to check to make sure i wasnt being charged daily and came across a small fee for 33 hours of NAT Gatway that was running.

I tend to prefer McGraw-Hill books when I choose to do certification training. This book is fine from a technical point of view. My one issue is the style. It reads like a sales brochure and comes off as very biased up-selling of AWS. I would have preferred if it was more neutral in its tone. You can tell me about features of a product without the constant bombardment of adjectives! You could probably edit this book down 1/3 with just that removed. Otherwise, another boy scout certs badge for me.

This book was definitely helpful to me in preparing for the real certification exam, which I passed yesterday. That's why I am giving it the full star rating, despite the errors and typos that other reviews have mentioned. The exam questions are generally tougher than the 130 questions that the book offers in its digital content, but going through them still helped me tackle the exam's questions. I just hope the author writes a similar book with digital content for the AWS Solution Architect-Professional certification.

I thought some of the labs and sample questions are quite useful. The handbook provides good reference material on specific topics, and the introductory sections to each chapter give a good birds eye view of AWS core services.A couple of things started bugging me the deeper I got into the book:1. The author sometimes repeats himself unnecessarily2. Doesn't always explain difficult concepts very well (chapter 3, VPC was pretty hard to follow)3. Heavy use of technical jargon where plain English would be refreshing4. Often guilty of wordy explanations, long sentences and longer paragraphs. There are also too many filler phrases like "you will notice", "please note", "it is important that you note", etc.5. Not always very effective use of diagramsI don't want to come across too harsh though. Clearly, the author is very knowledgable and I'm sure this book meets many people's needs based on the number of 5 star ratings. Perhaps this book is just not well suited to all learning styles. I found a very useful course on Udemy (acloudguru) that covers the same course content, but I found, easier to understand and more effective as a learning aid.

I only used this book to study for the test and I passed. Every question on the test that I saw was covered by the book. Would definitely recommend to anyone studying for this certification.

This is a very comprehensive guide, well researched and well written. I used this as supplemental information to my other exam preparation activities. My gripe with this book is that the editing missed a lot of typos and grammatical errors. While the information portrayed in the book is solid, sometimes it is difficult reading sections due to the wrong words being used, grammar which is poor, and general other issues that should have been resolved during the book's editing period.Someone from the publisher should review this book again and fix the problems so that future purchasers have a professional quality guide that reflects the price.

This book is well written. It has really helped me to grasp the concepts that I will need to pass the AWS CSAA Exam the first time. The author does a great job of breaking down the chapters into theory and concept backed up by mini exams to reinforce what you are learning. The book comes with a code to gain access to an online test portal where you can take full tests. This online offering is worth the price of the book alone. The book comes with a CD...but who has a CD reader... The last CD reader I had on a laptop was 2014.

I like how the chapters/contents are designed. All the complex topics are explained in very simple term with illustrations. Also, I like the Answers to the questions and why the wrong answers are wrong and why the correct answers are correct. Very helpful.

I should have done more research before ordering this. Book is fine, came quickly, but it's for SHUTTLE tatting, and I am trying to learn NEEDLE tatting. Some parts of the instructions do not work for needle tatting.

This is an excellent book for beginners and more advanced tatters as well. I am relatively new at tatting and found most of the patterns easy to follow. I love the bell patterns!

It's hard to stay with the pattern. I think the designs are super but the layout of instructions reads like a book. I like instructions laid out in 1. 2. 3 format. I will probably rewrite them so they are easier to read and keep up with my place.

My wife loves the book. It's larger than expected.
