I read this as I like travel logs about small boats. Theroux is an excellent writer, and it's fun to get lost in the details of this trip that covers all of the major stopping points in Oceana. The only reason I have left off the fifth star is that as a traveler and an ethnographer, he tends to form a negative view or at least a narrative that focuses on the negatives of each culture he encounters. After a while, the book starts seeming like a catalog of "what is wrong with these people and this place". A great deal of that is appropriate, however, and the book is a definite knockdown of any dreamy ideas of "Gaugin's Paradise" in favor of the brutal realities of how the modern world is affecting or has affected the places and cultures of Oceana as of the late '80s. It also presents some pretty good evidence as to why Thor Heyerdahl's theories about migration are dead wrong.

Many reviewers of this book cited the author's melancholy in the early chapters. Divorce is depressing!I have visited many of the islands covered in this comprehensive overview of Oceania and found the descriptions to be remarkably consistent with my experiences. If you've never been to the Pacific Islands, this will give you a true feel for the varied and exotic peoples and locations. Mr. Theroux spent a good deal of time in the Solomons, which are not nearly as developed and accessible as the better known chains (Cook Islands, Society Islands, Hawaii). I found his description of American Samoa particularly interesting as I was married to a Samoan and visited family on the island. The comments about Pago Pago are spot on. The opening chapters on Australia and New Zealand were fascinating.

Before reading this book, I read through some of the reviews on here. Needless to say, I had the preconceived notion that this book was going to be the diatribe of a misanthropic, bitter wanderer. Although there are some moments where Theroux gets carried away with unkind portraits - his descriptions of Tongans and Samoans, for example - he is not the monster that many of the reviews here paint him as. Not everybody can be happy all the time, and that's more or less how he tells the story. If you have never read Paul Theroux, then perhaps you will be a bit shocked at his raw cynicism. I, for one, am a big fan. This is the blood and guts of world travel. Nobody can be completely open to a new culture or worldview, and certain things are bound to be annoying. The entire adventure of his literary tour in Australia, for example, points out the nagging, dragging questions of people unfamiliar with his work yet trying to conduct journalistic interviews. It isn't until he is rumbling over the outback that he meets a rural Australian who knows and admires his work - rather unexpectedly, at that. Also, one must remember that Theroux puts it right on the table that he is going through some serious issues in his life - a rough marriage break up, health issues, and feelings of alienation - and is removing himself from the mundane to paddle away his problems.I, for one, feel like this is one of Theroux's finest books. It is devoid of a real theme and lets you paddle alongside Theroux and his emotional travails. I've traveled a bit in Melanesia, and I find his descriptions to be quite apt. Trouble is everywhere in paradise. Murky, trashed lagoons and quarreling kin networks. Bugs, nagging children, and hustlers. But also, there is the hospitality, the betel nut, the amazing conversations, the unique and unexpected characters and, of course, the bleeding sunsets and turquoise, coral-studded seas.

I can't remember if it was this book or Kingdom By The Sea that was the first of Theroux's travel books I ever read. 'Kingdom by the Sea' turned out to be one of may favorite books and I have read it several times. This book, though, is also quite good and I have read it twice now.A lot of people have been very critical of Mr Theroux's travel writing but I do not share their opinions for the most part. I am not a happy traveler so I like to hear about somebody else's experiences in places I will likely never visit. I don't require a thorough, properly researched and documented sociological study in these books... I just want to be entertained. Theroux does so in this book and quite a few of his others that I have read. After reading this book I had a fuller appreciation that many of these pacific islands are considerably less like the paradises they have elsewhere been held out to be. Perhaps Theroux rather crankily overstates this, as some have suggested, but I recognize people will come away from a given place with different impressions than others. That is only to be expected and should in no way diminish one's enjoyment of a good read.C John Thompson

I can't begin to say how much I enjoyed reading this book. I have seen the BBC series several times and I enjoyed the brief video at the end that gave a hint about the process of production, but this is so much more in depth and I was never bored because I never imagined how much work and how many factors have to be considered in order to produce a film project--particularly one as excellent as this one turned out to be.It isn't one of those books where your interest will be captured by the photos and the captions and you'll just browse the text. With the possible exception of the pages that showed a typical day's scheduled activities, every other page is fascinating. I only wish the photos had been a little larger. For some group pictures I had to take out a magnifying glass to identify the faces.

I love this book! I have never been a movie fan. As Mary in P&P says, "I would infinitely prefer a book". However, when I saw the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice, I was totally blown away. The passion and quality of the acting, the scenery, the costumes, was so incredibly moving! So, I watched the bonus that came with the movie, and was so impressed with how passionate Sue Birtwhistle, Andrew Davies, Simon Langton and Gerry Scott were about the book and movie, that I craved to learn more. When I saw this book available, I had to have it. What a treasure trove! The interview with Colin Firth was worth the book, but the information on the costumes, choosing the filming sites, etc., are fascinating. I honor the people involved in this project. I love to see anyone do a job with all their heart. The skill, commitment, and passion evidenced in this movie deserves the highest honor.

2003's "The Making of Pride and Prejudice" is a peek behind the scenes at the transformation of Jane Austen's classic romance novel into the 1995 BBC television production, a classic in its own right.Sue Birwhistle and Susie Conklin walk the reader through the entire process, from selling the idea to a reluctant studio, to Andrew Davies' superb adaptation of the novel into six TV episodes, through casting, preproduction, shooting, and finally postproduction. The book is filled with comments from the workers on both sides of the camera, and illustrated with fascinating set photography.Recreating the 19th Century required extensive research into such mundane matters as period costumes, hairstyles, drapery patterns, furniture, and music and dance. Months of pre-production paid off in an authentic look, at the cost of daily two-hour costume and make-up sessions for the actors and nightly refreshing of sets. Minor challenges included the delicate task of keeping food presentable for the three day shoot of the Netherfield supper party.Location shooting, even in a country rich with old homes, required patient negotiation with owners over the restoration of house and grounds to a 19th century appearance. The expenses of production required shooting by location vice chronological order; Colin Firth notes his very first scene was Darcy's marriage proposal to Elizabeth.Casting presented its own challenges for such a popular story. The book shares the concerns of the actors, along with some interesting before and after make-up portraits. A highlight is an extended interview with Colin Firth on the challenges of the role of Mr. Darcy. Jennifer Ehle adds her own comments on the grueling five month shooting schedule, which required her presence on set for all but five days."The Making of Pride and Prejudice" will be equally fascinating to dedicated fans of the BBC television version and those interested in the actual details of production. This book is very highly recommended to both audiences.

The perfect complement to a viewing of the best-ever Pride and Prejudice production. Firth and Ehle never disappoint. ( I only hope I spelled "Lizzie's" last name correctly). This book says everything about the joys and challenges of transferring a novel to the screen.

Excellent books for the Jane Austen fans w lots of information on the A&E/BBC / Jennifer Ehle/Colin Firth production. This version is our favorite video of P&P and this book is lavishly adorned with behind the scenes photos and pre-production and production information showing the detailed cosideration that serves as the foundation of great movies. NICE!

First, I have to say that I have NEVER bought a "Behind the Scenes" book on ANY movie. I stumbled across "The Making of Pride and Prejudice" on Amazon. Sue Birtwistle's adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" IS probably my favorite movie of all time, but the previous reviews on Amazon convinced me that I would like the book as well.If you truly enjoyed the movie, I hope that you will take a chance and read, "The Making of Pride and Prejudice" by Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin - even if you don't normally read this type of book. It is FASCINATING. It isn't just all the wonderful pictures (and how DIFFERENT the actors looked!); it is that this book methodically explains the concept behind the movie, the writing, the casting, the houses ("Pemberley" is actually at Lyme Park), the costumes, the wigs (Jennifer Ehle is a BLONDE!) and so many more interesting facts.I was particularly amazed that Colin Firth originally TURNED DOWN the role of Darcy - because he didn't feel that he could do justice to the part. (Most of us can't imagine ANYONE except Firth playing the role!) Sue Birtwistle had to convince him to do the part. (And he was so nervous that he was physically ill initially.)This is a terrific book, which chronicles the process of making a truly magnificent movie.

This book was recommended to me in a peaceful parenting group. I had finally realized that my daughters rigidity was due to anxiety not her just being “difficult”. It broke my heart since I know what living with anxiety is like and didn’t want that for her. I tried and failed to do things to help her. This book was an amazing resource to explain why what I was doing wasn’t working and what I could do instead. I started implementing the suggestions in this book during the summer and could not be happier with the change in both my daughter and I. There is a drastic decrease in stand offs and meltdowns (from both of us!). I am so grateful for the positive changes this book has brought to our home. Even my four year old has used the strategies to calm herself down....just from hearing the conversations between my older daughter and I! I feel like we can breathe again! I can’t recommend it enough!

The book has very good suggestions for both children AND adults. I wish I could have read it before I had children. Having taught elementary school for 7 years before starting our family, I thought I was well prepared but having your own is just not the same. Children are all so different. This book is helping me to relate to my grandchildren and my grown children.

I've only read the first couple of chapters to help my 5yo with some extreme anxiety over getting sick. It helped immediately, I haven't even needed to finish the book. As it is meant to be used for older children, I'm sure I'll be referring to it again in the future.

I am learning so much about myself and my children as I read this. It is written from honest, highly educated psychologists who share years of experience. The most helpful piece and every chapter is the way they explained there are many clients whom have dealt with so many similar issues. Everything is coming from first-hand knowledge and dealing with people, so their words carry a lot of weight! Incredible learning experience for us to grow away from rut of anxiety!

Having a history of anxiety and a 13 year old that has been experiencing it, this book is perfect. It's given me clear ways to speak about anxiety, and how we both can handle it. It's given me such hope that he and I will happily leave our "what if's" behind. I feel I have great strategies to guide him through this. I've recommended it to several parents. Thank you for an excellent resource. Glad to know I was doing somethings right and can correct my "talking points" to my son and myself for the future.

Wow! What an eye opener. I never realized how I fed into my child's anxiety. Now I see where he gets it.This is a really good book. Some of it was not relevant to our situation, but over all, I learned a lot(about myself!).

"Anxious Parents, Anxious Kids" is an absolute must read for parents and grandparents with a child struggling with anxiety and worry issues. An amazing book that gave me literally dozens of ideas on how to help my grandson. I thought I was doing everything right ... and I was doing most things wrong! I'd written a book about my grandson ("Grammie Rules: 49 reasons to spend time with your grandkids"), but I was doing so many things wrong to help him grow and deal with issues. The book clearly described my behavior and gave me "how to" instructions to correct it. Fabulous! And it has worked.

Absolutely eye-opening book! Has many ideas and techniques I had not heard of or thought of. I listened to this on MP3 audio book and narrator was excellent.

Mickey and Angie are two autoimmune warriors speaking from the heart, and with years of practical experience, to their community."--Terry Wahls, M.D., author of The Wahls Protocol“Autoimmune wellness advocates Mickey and Angie have created a must-have resource for each and every one of the estimated 60 million Americans battling autoimmune disease, an epidemic now spread across the globe. This comprehensive guidebook not only brims with compassion and understanding but also gives you all of the information, tools and inspiration you need to live your best life with autoimmune disease.”--Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Approach“The road to recovery from autoimmune disease can feel like an overwhelming expedition full of twists and challenges. Autoimmune disease is not a quick fix and often times patients need multiple interventions to get themselves well. Mickey and Angie have created a comprehensive and practical handbook that will guide you down the path to recovery from autoimmune disease. The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook is a roadmap that can accelerate the journey to health for autoimmune patients!”--Izabella Wentz, PharmD, FASCP New York Times bestselling author of Hashimoto’s the Root Cause “Packed to the gills with applicable solutions, The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook is my new favorite resource for today’s #1 emerging health challenge. If you or a loved one suffers from autoimmunity, and aren’t sure where to begin--START HERE.”--Russ Crandall, The New York Times bestselling author of Paleo Takeout and The Ancestral Table“It is normal to meet an autoimmune diagnosis with a tremendous sense of confusion, loss, and betrayal, and the information overwhelm can leave the initiate tumbling in its wake. This is where Mickey and Angie’s book comes in. The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook is an elegant and encouraging guide that not only succinctly reviews the nuts and bolts of autoimmune disease management, but also leads you through an often tumultuous inner journey with loving wisdom. In its own unforgiving way, autoimmune diseases forces us to honor human design, not society’s (often shaming) version. The autoimmune patient must learn to rest, self-advocate, love and be loved, self-nourish, move appropriately, release toxic people and situations, and lift the veil on buried shadows. Like all of life’s best rewards, autoimmune management is hard won. But, as this handbook shows you, the autoimmune journey can also be an enriching path to a more authentic you.”--Dr. Datis Kharrazian, author of Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? and Why Isn’t My Brain Working?

I think this book is fantastic! and am only giving 4 stars because of these few, somewhat petty irks...As another reviewer wrote, The pumpkin and butternut squash are missing from the week 2 shopping list. I write a lot of notes in my cookbooks and the paper this is printed on isn't great for that. So if you take notes, expect a messy book or test an ink pen in the back first. Also, I wish this wasn't pigeonholed to "autoimmune" as these are the steps that anyone with chronic illness might want to follow, and are really just a strong solid foundation for anyone to have good health.Other than that, I am finding this to be an excellent step by step workbook. Perhaps because my brain puts information in as the order it was written by the authors, or they just made it accessible. I have the mothership book by Sarah Ballantyne, The Paleo Approach, that the authors of AWH referenced for their book. This book puts the textbook-like writing of Dr. Ballantyne's into an approachable step by step... at least I think so, I have some serious mental fog so keep that in mind, ha!I can tell that it is well thought out as I have to retrace things many times to process and this book is fluid for me, which I need right now. I get the why but stumbled putting together the how. I also love that it starts with sleep and meditation. So many well meaning people start with a big push on the movement, really not understanding that it can take all day to make a pot of soup when you are ill. Which brings up something else about this book I appreciated: the cooking wasn't overwhelming, but I couldn't have started without a hand that first week. My stamina has been improving since then (probably because of the "permission" to rest, be still and silent). When I add in the local market that has online ordering that can be picked up by anyone (which saves days when I consider all it takes to get there, shop, home, put away and then recover for a day or three) and I don't have to wait for the delivery window and delivery person in the house. {side note: I can't manage a butternut squash yet, some days carrots are a lot, so I do have bags of frozen on hand instead (it saves a lot of kitchen & recovery time). Seems like 2 10oz bags of frozen butternut equal one fresh and a bag of sliced carrots is usually what goes well in soups, stews, and the like. Also, I look for any kale, chard, etc. already washed and prepped. It's worth the extra pocket change to spare the kitchen time; I had to let go over my penny-pinching tendencies}The recipes are good and the portions are generous. We eased in the first week and just did the meal plan as written (which is for 1 person) With my husband eating leftovers from the week before and transitioning the last of our fresh produce, we had plenty of food for the 2 of us. I have a lot of nausea and I found the meals easy on my gut and I can always manage to eat at least 1/2 because they smell so tantalizing. Having leftovers planned in the meal plan is perfect! Thank you for not turning leftovers into something else and having to basically recook something. So many meal plans try to make things glamorous and I simply need fast, easy, clean, and tasty. That they freeze well and say how long they keep is great! I don't have to watch my husband play leftover roulette trying to remember when he made something (I don't participate in this bizarre game of his.) Also, I sort of blew up our oven like a Molotov cocktail and have been using an Instapot instead of baking the recipes. I find a similar recipe in an instapot cookbook and just adapt the time and pressure to the AWH recipes (then make a messy note of it in the book for next time). Any liquid gets simmered down into a sauce. I'm looking forward to trying these in an oven when it is back online.I'm honestly surprised that I was able to take a shower from start to finish, drying hair, the full gig, without feeling like I was going to pass out for the first time in over a year. I'm so skeptical and jaded after giving so many promises a go but it has only been a few weeks and that's a big shift. I'm also not feeling exhausted today after such a wild ride that most people don't give thought to every morning. I'm looking forward to making exciting progress, like a shower and checking the mail in the same day... maybe a walk around a park (to dream!). Snark aside, I am very appreciative to the authors for putting together the workbook that I needed and getting me started when I wasn't able to think and plan.

This book has made the transition to an AIP lifestyle so much easier for me. It’s chock full of information to help you figure out where you are on your health journey. I haven’t been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease yet, but fall into the category the authors refer to as “silent autoimmunity”, a period of mild, nondescript, seemingly unrelated but increasingly bothersome/disruptive symptoms. I’m on day 13 of the protocol and several of the worst symptoms have almost completely disappeared. The elimination diet guide is extremely helpful and empowering and the recipes are awesome. I’m kind of a cookbook snob and went to culinary school and the ones we’ve tried are delicious, even for my very non-AIP and picky husband. We especially love the Moroccan chicken with apricots and olives.I’ve finished reading the book and it’s a great guide to healthy living in general, not just for those with autoimmune issues. The book addresses the problem of leaky gut (a true health epidemic, in my opinion) and how it contributes to the development of autoimmunity. I also appreciate how it doesn’t overlook other key aspects of wellness like sleep, stress and exercise. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their overall well-being. You won’t be disappointed!

I like the recipes but they are not all AIP friendly. I'll probably use this quite a bit after I finish my AIP protocol. There is dairy and other ingredients that wouldn't make it work if you're doing AIP. However many of these recipes look really delicious so I'm excited to use it in a couple months. If I like the recipes I'll revise my rating.

I wish I had more time in the day to just sit and read this book. I am three chapters deep and I love it--no selling-speak....just honest conversation about the disease and little sections and blips about the authors journey and their experiences which completely brings credibility to the book. A lot of references to other books and my personal favorite, clinical studies and scientific research. It is also NOT just a blah-blah-blah-touchy-feely babble book. So far, I am happy with the information--Autoimmune is a lifestyle--it's not just a diet or trying to eat better"--thing....they capture that in the book. I really love it.

So helpful!! I've only been on this a week, a lot of my symptoms are gone. Not only am I feeling better. I have lost 8 lbs in this first week and 11.5 inches! Food really is medicine.

I have to audio immune diseases idiopathic chronic uciteria and angioedema. I have been dealing with both of these for the past 2 years and finally got to a point where I really just needed to figure this out for myself since my doctors were not interested and really helping me along my journey of healing. I bought this book and it is wonderful. It really helps to navigate through the steps that you really need to take in order to take control back in your life and a step-by-step guide to get you to a place of healing. I have been following the audioimmune protocol diet for about 6 weeks and in addition I've been doing it Candi smart regimen and I feel pretty amazing. Better than I felt in the past two years.

I really enjoyed this book. I felt like I was there and I really didn't want my stay to end. I would set the book down and reflect. I found myself going to YouTube to tour the city so I even felt more like I was there. When reading about the music I listened to it and meditated in the sun of my backyard. Enjoyed the book so much got a copy of Honey and Dust, another book by Piers. And I find myself taking a slow trip along with him, not wanting it to end to soon. If you love to travel vicariously, this is a great read for you.

As fascinating, colorful and moving as India itself. I loved the author's respectful tone; he does not demean what he doesn't understand, but tries to, and succeeds, in illuminating it for those of us who have never been to this country of staggering contrasts.

I was surprised to love this book so much! The prose is eloquent, thoughtful, but not in a self-indulgent way. I've never been to Varanasi but feel that this was an awesome way to understand the city before I get there myself.

Piers Moore Ede is very happy with his chance to live in Varanasi for a year. He fell in love with India on earlier visits and he's excited to live there. For a year he explores the city. He meets with business owners, observes local customs and discovers many things about Varanasi and India. He makes new friends and almost every day he learns something interesting. Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. Piers Moore Ede tries to find out what makes this city and its inhabitants so special.Kaleidoscope City is a very well written report of Piers Moore Ede's year in Varanasi. He's met so many interesting people and writes about their encounters. Not all of these meetings are with men and women who have something happy and positive to tell. Even though the lives of some of these people are hard and sometimes miserable they aren't afraid, because they know that death will mean they're ready for something better.I loved the chapter about the Ganga. The river is so important and it's suffering, because it's polluted. Some people are very worried about that, but so far their battles haven't had much result. Piers Moore Ede talks about it with both the highly educated who are working from an office and those who use the river itself and whatever it has to offer as their main source of income. That's something I like about this book. It's mainly observational and because of the conversations the author has with a great variety of people the reader gets to see many different points of view. Another chapter I loved was the one about the weavers of India's beautiful intricate fabrics. Modern times are making it difficult for some of the weavers to keep earning money, but for others it's a golden opportunity.Kaleidoscope City is a perfect read for those who like travel stories and who want to know more about India. Because the author stayed there for a year he had the time to get to know Varanasi quite well. I think the report is beautiful and honest and it's certainly interesting. I learned a lot from it and think it's a fascinating read.

Enraptured by the teeming spectacle of life in India, but most especially by the city of Veranasi located on the banks of the worshipped Ganga river, the author records his impressions and images from his year’s immersion in its culture. Overwhelmed by the sights, smells, sounds, colors, actions and diversity of the multitudes of residents, Piers Moore Ede tackles different aspects of the pulsating region which is home to Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. Interviewing residents, he delves into their histories, the place of the caste system, the holy role of the Ganges, the rites of cremation, sex and the city, technology versus ancient crafts, and the daunting problems of uncontrolled bureaucracy and corruption. Exchanges between locals and professionals disclose the problems inherent in the sewage accumulation of the Ganges with the lack of any corrective infrastructure. The pervasiveness of rodents among the sweets and the enticing aromas of street food. The slow erosion of native crafts with the loss of possible earnings for the artisans by the invasive imitative technology. Captured here are the eclectic characteristics, personalities, rituals, and practices of an ancient city that worships both death and life and its manifold flaws along with the magic that sustains it.

Review

"WOW! This is some Tour de Force! In its scope and detailed content this looks like the book I never wrote. I absolutely applaud the concept of the book and the effort put into it. Golf science needed a book like this." Alastair Cochran(Co-author of The Search for the Perfect Swing, co-founder of the World Scientific Congress of Golf, influential science consultant for the golf equipment industry)"In a field so prolific with myths borne from the trappings of commercial marketing, author Peter Dewhurst has thoroughly blown the smoke and mirrors of misinformation away to explain the indisputable facts of how golf clubs do what they do. This fascinating book on the field of golf club and golf ball technical performance will be an invaluable resource for everyone involved in the game; and particularly for the inquisitive player wishing to understand the fundamentals of effective play." Tom Wishon, writer, designer, owner of Tom Wishon Golf Technology"No sport involves as much interesting physics as the game of golf and nowhere is this better described than in The Science of the Perfect Swing. Gaining a better understanding of the fundamentals of the game, from Dewhurst's easy to follow style will provide golfers with insights that will improve their performance and add to their overall appreciation of the sport." Raymond Penner, Professor of Physics, Vancouver Island University(developer of the physics for the AimPoint putting trajectory simulation on the Golf Channel)"The Science of the Perfect Swing is an impressive and compelling description of the complete golf shot in the tradition of The Search for the Perfect Swing. This book will benefit any golfer interested in a deeper understanding of the underlying science of the club, swing, and golf shot. Highly recommended." Steven Nesbit, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Lafayette College(expert on the biomechanics of the golf swing)I thoroughly enjoyed reading Peter Dewhurst's The Science of the Perfect Swing. It has both basic engineering science and more technical aspects that will attract both general and advanced readers. Rod Cross, Professor of Physics, University of Sydney(author of the successful books Technical Tennis and the Physics of Baseball and Softball)

From the Author

The principles of golf are those found in the general theory of impact, the science of flight, and the mechanics of motion including the bouncing and rolling of balls. These are the most fascinating of the physical sciences. The book should be considered as a dual-path journey. On the one hand the basic sciences are shown to explain even the finest details of the game. At the same time the different aspects of the game from the swing to the conditions for capture in the hole, provide wonderful examples for explaining scientific principles at work. If young golfers, in particular, become interested in the physical sciences through reading this book that would be a wonderful bonus. Almost everything about the game of golf provides examples of perfection, when measured in terms of the underlying scientific principles. The intention of the book is to describe this fundamental nature of the game in the simplest terms possible without sacrificing rigorous checks on the accuracy of the work. The reader with even distant memories of high school science, and maybe not even good memories, can follow the general descriptions of the golf science, and in so doing reach a much deeper and richer appreciation of the game.

Detailed look into the science behind the golf swing. Contains numerous diagrams and charts. If you are looking for the standard golf tips publication this is not it. If you're looking for a detailed understanding of the dynamics that drive the golf swing this is a real treat. Shows numerous comparisons between professional and amateur swings. While it does contain abundant detailed scientific analysis author summarizes key points for the average person to understand. Very unique publication.

The book is not intended to give any advice on the game, but understanding the physics behind can give you some insights to improve your game. In that sense the author could go through the most common faults and explain the physics behind the ball flight, like over the top, thin shots and the like.

There is no perfect swing but it helps to understand swing.

Good to read heavy on math! few books cover the subject so effectively and with such a level of details!

Excellent book on the physics and research that underlie the "attempts to put an elusive ball into an obscure hole with implements ill-adapted to the purpose."

This is a very physics oriented book. Have to read through a lot of physics to get to the practical information.

Worth purchasing for avid golfers, but I would invest in The Anatomy of Greatness by Brandel Chamblee first.

So I once went on a golf forum and asked if anyone knew whether if the club was accerating when it hit the ball it imparted more velocity then if the acceleration had peaked. The answer was, "I just hit 'em, find 'em, and hit 'em again.". i.e. physics questions not wanted here. But physics is what determines whether the ball goes straight and far. Period. Well, if you like physics, or even if you just don't mind it too much, this book will help your game. Now much of it is very very cerebral and only interesting from an intellectual point of view. You can skip those parts. But lots of it is directly convertible into how you swing. One item in particular increased distance and accuracy for me quite a lot. I won't publish that here because the author deserves to be paid for his insights.

Arthur Ransome, world famous for the hit series Swallows & Amazons, had, as a young man in 1913, gone to Russia as a foreign correspondent and journalist. He fell in love with Evgenia, Trotsky’s secretary, whom he later married. Together they owned two small yachts before commissioning the building of Racundra in 1922 at Rigia in Latvia. Its third cruise was their honeymoon.Brian Hammett was given a copy of Swallows and Amazons for his tenth birthday, and was immediately captivated by both the story and the author. The first boat he had was a closed canoe and he called it Swallow. He went on to join the Arthur Ransome Society and became an Arthur Ransome expert, discovering the unpublished Racundra’s Third Cruise in Leeds University library. He has cruised the Baltic himself, following Ransome’s cruises in the area.

A classic of the sail cruising genre. I purchased this Kindle edition to supplement the hard cover copy I own which lacks the original edition's photographs. The Kindle reproductions of the photos are not very high quality, so four out of five stars seems fit.Ransome's tone is droll and won't be to everyone's taste so read a few pages of the Kindle preview and you should be able to tell if it suits.

I have never been so frustrated by an Amazon purchase. This edition is essentially a photocopy of an earlier edition, but with truncated margins on every page -- consistently cutting off or cutting out text. It is therefore unreadable. Should not be for sale.

Authentic review of a man's passion: a walkabout with his sailboat Racundra. Loaded with lots of interesting facts about sailing technic, yachts and the Baltic Sea and Esthonia: a region totally unkwown for me.

Interesting descriptions of Baltic countries and their inhabitants in the 1920's. Lots to interest sailors also, however, the description of voyages is heavy on place names and requires constant reference to two poorly sized and printed maps. Perhaps Ransome relied to heavily on his logs.

I have a Penguin edition of 1956 without all the additional material of this new edition. But the basic story is the same. This is a charming narrative of a cruise in a well-built little sailboat, in waters of the Baltic countries, to places the author clearly knows and loves.Arthur Ransome later wrote a series of children's books focused on sailing. He would certainly have agreed with Kenneth Grahame's "Ratty" that ""There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." One might qualify that, noting that in Ransome's books, the sailing is rather more directed and purposeful - but he always communicates the sheer joy of being on the water in a craft that responds to the elements, at your direction (He was not a fan of engines of any kind - a sometimes necessary evil. Sailing was the thing.)"Racundra's First Cruise" was published in 1923. He had commissioned the building of Racundra, a thirty-foot ketch built for seaworthiness and comfort inside. With the "Ancient Mariner" - an old veteran of the days of sail in clipper ships - and "Cook" - probably the companion who was to become his second wife, but only identified by her unending task - he takes us through many sometimes tricky passages along the Baltic coast, visiting old cobblestoned towns and remote peasant villages. It is delightful to sink back into a time when the sea was still full of trading vessels under sail, though of course large and small steamers also abounded. Mentions of "during the war" refer of course to the Great War. Relics of older conflicts abound - Russian, Swedish, Latvian, Finnish, Estonian - and Ransome provides many interesting footnotes to their stories. My favorite encounter is that with the enigmatic man who lives alone, building a ship, in the forest. The ship is at first seen as "a golden hull in the shadows among those tall trees" then we see that "the upper planking was new, certainly, ruddy gold where the sun caught it, but lower down her hull was weathered"...."The keel, laid on great stones, was joined to them by moss. There was lichen upon it, and on the foot of the stern-post was a large, bright cluster of scarlet toadstools."Enjoy.

I wonder why Hollywood has not yet discovered this book: it has all the ingredients for a box-office hit - sailing in the Baltics, scenic sea- and landscapes, a romantic love affair of a British writer and the private secretary of Leon Trotsky. And the background - the Russian revolution, Estonia's struggle for independence. Rare photos illustrate the book. A must for the romantic sailor!

The story of RACUNDRA is worth reading especially for those attempting to sail or those who have sailed through the Moon Passage in Estonia. The historic descriptions of what is now Saarema, Virtsu, etc. makes wonderful reading!

Great little book - takes you back to a different, simpler, world. You don't have to be a sailor to enjoy this.
