When I Was Eight

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4-This condensed, illustrated version of Fatty Legs (Annick, 2010) brings the power of literacy to even younger children. An eight-year-old Inuit child from Banks Island in far northern Canada desperately wanted to learn to read English like her older sister, but her father refused to let her attend the Indian Residential School. However, her persistent pleading wore away his resistance, and he consented. They made the five-day trek to the Catholic-run school where Olemaun was stripped of her Native identity-her hair, her clothes, even her name. She was allowed to keep only her beloved copy of Alice in Wonderland. Renamed Margaret, she clung to her desire to learn to read, enduring humiliation and harsh treatment from cruel nuns and unkind classmates. She instinctively knew that literacy was powerful, and she used it to give her courage and "to carry [her] far away from the laughter." In a showdown with a nun, Margaret defied the insensitive teacher, who in turn tried to humiliate Margaret by demanding that she read a difficult passage aloud in class. However, she read without hesitation and triumphed. "There was no stopping me" is an accurate description of what happens when someone-child or adult-learns to read. Sprinkled throughout are details of Inuit life. The beautiful, expressive watercolor illustrations depict Margaret's journey from her village to the misery of residential school to her success. This book is a small but powerful reminder of the freedom that literacy brings.-Lisa Crandall, formerly at the Capital Area District Library, Holt, MIα(c) Copyright 2013. Review

The words and the art in When I Was Eight convey a frightful but honest story about perseverance... Look for it. Order it. Share it. (Debbie Reese American Indians in Children's Literature 2013-02-21)A searing account of assimilation policies and a celebration of the human spirit In this picture-book memoir, an Inuit recollects how she begged her father to attend the church-run Indian residential school so she could fulfill her cherished dream to learn to read... What she discovers is the school is draconian... Olemaun describes how a nun cuts her braid, changes her name, and assigns an endless list of chores... Even as she labors, Olemaun finds strength in memories of her father's love and uses every opportunity to study the alphabet and sound out words. Effective shadow-ridden illustrations capture the pervasive atmosphere of abuse, but the final picture speaks volumes about Olemaun's determination and triumph: her face appears as large and shining as the sun emerging from darkness, because she has taught herself to read... A searing account of assimilation policies and a celebration of the human spirit. (Jeanne McDermott Booklist 2013-04-30)Olemaun is a great character and an excellent example for young readers to follow. (Shelbey Krahn Canadian Materials 2013-06-21)Pokiak-Fenton's true story of her experiences at residential school, was originally told in Fatty Legs (Annick, 2010), When I Was Eight is an even more powerful read due to its emphasis on concise, affective text coupled with Gabrielle Grimard's quietly unpretentious artwork. (Canlit for Little Canadians 2013-04-28)Powerful and disturbing... Readers will admire her for her incredible spirit and courage. (Exeter Times Advocate 2013-05-31)Utterly compelling. (Kirkus Reviews 2013-02-18)When I was Eight is a powerful story based on the true story of Margaret Pokiak-Fenton... It is a story of a young Inuit girl who goes to a residential school and suffers terrible abuse from the nuns at the school... Through all these trials, she perseveres in trying to learn to read. One day in class she is finally able to stand up to the teacher and show her own strength by reading aloud. It is a moment of victory! Although this story may be intended for younger students who are studying the Inuit, it could also be used in upper grades when discussing social justice issues. The story ties in with anti-bullying themes as well... Highly recommended. (Lori Austin Resource Links, Vol. 18, No. 5 2013-05-31)This condensed, illustrated version of Fatty Legs brings the power of literacy to even younger children... The beautiful, expressive watercolor illustrations depict Margaret's journey to the misery of residential school to her success. (Lisa Crandall School Library Journal 2013-05-01)This excellent picture book, written as a companion to the longer version of it called Fatty Legs, is a powerful way to introduce the residential school experience to younger readers. In When I Was Eight readers get to see what it was like for a young Inuit girl to leave her family for a residential school. There are some very negative experiences there for her, but it is also a time for her to discover her own strength and determination.I have been happy to see more and more children's literature and non-fiction about the residential school era in North America. This is a time in history that our country should know about and should remember. I think there has been healing in the sharing of these stories and the more people that hear them, the better off we all are. This also fills a gap that we have. I am looking forward to more picture book memoirs like this.

This is a great book.

love it

A moving story that is great to use as a read-aloud.

great picturesprobably wouldn't read it as a picture book to younger kids b/c it's a bit "scary" with the Raven (evil teacher)

When I Was Eight by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton is an adaptation of Fatty Legs, in which Olemaun recollects her negative experiences in a church-run residential school. Because I have read both books, as I review When I Was Eight, I will also be comparing and contrasting the two versions.I'll start with what I liked about When I Was Eight. The well-crafted writing style stands out more in When I Was Eight. There are many active verbs, such as "shrugged" and "begged". In addition, there's a lot of figurative language, such as "the sun slept" and "slumbering ice". The strong word choices exist in Fatty Legs too, but they feel more prevalent and significant in a picture book. When I Was Eight would make for an excellent mentor text in elementary schools. When I Was Eight is also more focused than Fatty Legs. The latter is about Olemaun (Margaret's Inuit name) and her family, her friends, her desire to read, her conflicts with a mean nun and brother, and more. In contrast, When I Was Eight is solely about Oleman's determination to read enabling her to withstand all forms of abuse from a nameless nun. In fact, the story is so tightly told that it develops a fairy tale quality, where the young heroine must battle an evil grown-up. Because of its overt theme, teachers could use When I Was Eight to help reluctant readers see how the power of books can change them.Next, I'll turn to what I didn't like about When I Was Eight. Due to the brevity of text required of a picture book, some important details were left out. For example, When I Was Eight tells readers that Olemaun enters the laundry room, stands beside a huge vat, and then "gets an idea" about how to get rid of the red stockings. In contrast, Fatty Legs tells readers tells how a tear vanishing into bubbling water gives her that idea.In my review of Fatty Legs, I highlighted its realistic characters because sometimes books that depict atrocities resort to portraying all of the "enemy" as evil but Fatty Legs avoided that trap. Well.... as I review When I Was Eight has eliminated the friend who provided support to Olemaun, and the kind nun, and really anyone who seemed nice. Instead Olemaun is on her own in her determination to read. Some critics have lamented the absence of a historical note in as I review When I Was Eight . I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, in Fatty Legs I greatly appreciated the scrapbook and other supplementary material that provided context for the story. I ended up wanting to read more Inuit stories. On the other hand, the historical notes meant while reading Fatty Legs I remained keenly aware that I was learning about a real time and a real place. Whereas, as I noted above, When I Was Eight was more like a fairy tale. Both approaches serve a purpose, as does having two versions that are intended for different readers. Each book provides a glimpse into the way of life of the Inuit, while also containing an inspiring universal message. There are two more books in the set, another chapter and picture book combo. It'll be interesting to see what Christy Jordan-Fenton writes next about her mother-in-law's experiences of growing up Inuit.

"When I Was Eight" is a poignant tale of an eight-year-old Inuit girl named Olemaun whose one desire above all else is to read. She wishes to go to the outsider's school (Reservation school) but her father doesn't want to send her for reasons Olemaun comes to understand much later. When she does attend the school, Olemaun finds herself and the other Inuit students being put to work, doing menial chores, and sadly, Olemaun becomes the target of a cruel nun who taunts and humiliates the young girl. The story is depressing but as my eight-year-old read this to me during our nightly bedtime reading, we both rejoiced in Olemaun's tenacity and fierce determination to not only rise above her oppression but to also realize her dream of learning to read. Yes, the story is incredibly sad, especially when one considers the abominable treatment these young children had to endure in a place that was meant to shelter, care for, and educate them. I spent some time discussing the themes in the book with my young daughter and she expressed happiness and relief that Olemaun was able to learn to read, despite all that she had endured. After reading "When I Was Eight", I discovered that the author had also written Fatty Legs: A True Story, which is a chapter book on a similar theme geared towards readers ages 9 and up. My daughter has expressed interest in reading the book, and I for one intend to read Broken Circle: The Dark Legacy of Indian Residential Schools.

We read "When I Was Eight" for our homeschool history study. We also read "Not My Girl". I recommend reading both books together for a more complete picture of Olemaun's experiences. Both books were beautifully written and illustrated, and made even more special because they are true. Written from the perspective of an eight year old child, "When I Was Eight" was very accessible for my second grader, and she really connected to Olemaun, and the story of being bullied by an adult (a mean nun) and having to be resourceful and tenacious in order to survive and thrive in an alien and hostile environment (the school). Written from the perspective of a ten year old in "Not My Girl", Olemaun has feelings of not fitting in when she returned to her family, but there is so much love and patience from her parents that she finally feels at home again. We loved both of these books so much we are planning to also read the longer books as well ("Fatty Legs" and "A Stranger at Home").Thank you to the authors and illustrator for such a valuable document written for children. This review was written by alias "Jumping Fish", age seven:" I read the book "When I Was Eight". The little girl in the story has to go to a "Indian" school. Her name is Olemaun. The nun at the school is not nice. It is good, good, good !!! Olemaun is strong and nice. She understood that nun was trying to get a reaction and she ignored her."

I'm a (recently) retired lawyer. I know that the legal industry is changing. There are fewer openings and it's harder than it used to be to get a foothold. This book will significantly assist the law student or new lawyer find something that's fulfilling for him or her It's full of sound, practical advice for defining your goals and then adopting a strategy that will get you where you want to be. The style is fresh and lively. It's full of information that can really make a difference.I imagine this book would be very helpful for any young professional, whether in the law or any other field, looking for a way up. For a young lawyer, it would be truly invaluable. Highly recommended!

I wish I had this book when I was in law school. As a law student, it's easy to inundate yourself with career office interviewing guides, but none will be quite as in-depth and practical as The Law Career Playbook. What stood out the most was the amount of concrete examples throughout the book. For example, Rachel Gezerseh gives detailed advice on how to handle the back-and-forth you might expect to have during interviews. Not only does she show the expected "safe" answers, but she also gives detailed examples on how to bring interview answers to the next level. I also appreciated her e-mail templates for all sorts of occasions.Networking networking networking. It's something that every law student hears is very important, but seldom do you receive any guidance on how to go about doing this. This book helps re-frame how you might think about networking, and actually breaks it down in a very focused fashion. When I used to think of networking, it all seemed very transactional to me. However, Gezerseh's book highlights how to make networking a genuine experience.Lastly, I couldn't help but notice how relatable Gezerseh is with her writing. Many career guides sound like they are talking AT you, but this one truly feels like you are reading tailored advice from a trusted mentor. Overall, this handbook was extremely insightful and practical. It's something that I'd definitely recommend for all law students and even junior attorneys.

Rachel's book provides a step-by-step breakdown and insights aimed at simplifying the art of successful networking. Though couched in terms of helping aspiring attorneys who are seeking their first jobs, this book contains many insights that even the most seasoned professional would find useful. It is really a must read for professionals who are seeking to start their careers, and those who are in the midst of perfecting their careers (and if you have already perfected your career, you should read this anyway because I’m guessing you don’t have much else to do). All-in-all, I would strongly recommend this book, and would do so to all of my own mentees.

As a former BigLaw hiring partner and now the managing attorney of a growing firm, I have been involved in law firm hiring for over 20 years. I haven't read anything as comprehensive as The Law Career Playbook when it comes to finding your dream job. The book provides concrete suggestions for developing your network and discovering what you really want out of a law career even before starting law school. The step-by-step guide is a true "playbook" that anyone can use to create career opportunities, grow their existing business, or even make a change later in your legal career. I plan on buying copies for all of our summer law clerks.

The Law Career Playbook is such a great tool for law students and young lawyers. The author offers a hands-on approach to get ahead , including networking and branding strategies that don't get enough time in most law school classrooms. This is the book to read if you want to break into law.

This book is hands down a MUST READ for anyone going into the legal profession. Considering the vast amount of information we take in going through law school, we don’t spend enough time talking to law students about how to actually find proper placement afterwards. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking of becoming a lawyer.

The Law Career Playbook is a must read for everyone venturing into the uncharted waters of a very competitive and challenging law career. Rachel’s personal experience and career expertise is what drew me deeper into the book with its real life and applicable methods. I will be telling my fellow law graduates about this book so they too can jumpstart their careers!

The Law Career Playbook is must-read for anyone starting their career in law. It offers top-notch strategies on networking & branding with solid overall advice. A great resource!!!

This guide is packed with information about visiting Pennsylvania. For a huge state, it's hard to believe that there isn't another travel guide for the whole state. This is the one! It has tons of info about Philly and Pittsburgh, and everything in between and top to bottom. The author is one of Philly's top writers and editors and she spent months traveling the state to write this book. My husband and I have been travelling to the Wellsboro area for decades and it's hard to believe, but we found new things to do there in the book. This would be a great gift for any Pennsylvanian and anyone who enjoys exploring both cities and the roads less traveled.

Very comprehensive. It gives great insights into not only the more popular and well known sights but also the lesser known but equally as interesting and worthwhile destinations. Highly recommended to anyone planning to travel to Pennsylvania and even locals looking to get to know their own area better.

This book has great restaurant suggestions all over the state. I live in Philadelphia and it's been a nice resource to plan little weekend trips outside the city. Based on the author's picks in Philly, I'm looking forward to try attractions and restaurants throughout Pennsylvania.

Easy to follow, great recommendations, seems comprehensive and definitely worth having as a travel guide.

About the Author

Jhonen Vasquez is a writer and artist who walks in many worlds, not unlike Blade, only without having to drink blood-serum to survive the curse that is also his greatest power (still talking about Blade here). He’s worked in comics and animation and is the creator of Invader ZIM, a fact that haunts him to this day. Eric Trueheart was one of the original writers on the Invader ZIM television series back when there was a thing called “television.”  Since then, he’s made a living writing moderately-inappropriate things for people who make entertainment for children, including Dreamworks Animation, Cartoon Network, Disney TV, PBS, Hasbro and others.  Upon reading this list, he now thinks he maybe should have become a dentist, and he hates teeth. Warren Wucinich is an illustrator, colorist and part-time carny currently living in Durham, NC. It’s very bright. Really, it’ pretty bright. We get it, your shining brightly on a dark world. Really, it’s getting uncomfortable. Could you dial it back just a bit? Turn down that light already ZIM!!!!!!! I KNOW it’s you!Another fine volume to sit on my shelf, next to, ironically enough, Invader Zim Volume One; Funny, huh!Collected here are comics 11-20 in another beautifully hard bound book. And it’s bigger than the comics, so you, know, Dib’s head is EVEN MORE MASSIVE!It does not matter that I have all of the single issues of Zim, Polly bagged and stored in a comic box...... No, this is BETTER! It’ Bigger, it’s ZIM IN YOUR FACE!Okay, it’s the same stories as the comics, plus bonus material, but what I love most is that there are no advertisements in the volume, it’s all ZIM goodness! A 32 page comic has 9 pages of adds for other comics and stuff, which is like broadcast television. This is just the greatness of Zim stories, no adverts, which is more like watching a prime membership with no commercials.Order it, order it now! It’s Zim, Gir, Dib, Gaz, The Tallest, and all the other love-able hated characters. It’s bigger-er, it’s better-er, it’s Volume Two-er-er!To quote everyone’s favorite bot... “You NEED it!”

I’m quite the Invader Zim fan, and I’ve read all the comics volumes prior to this one, so of course, I had to pick it up. What kind of terrible person would I be if I hadn’t?!Volume 5 is a bit different from the other volumes in that the first four chapters are actually one long continuous story instead of mini-stories. I quite liked this because it allows for more plot development than several shorter stories would. The story itself is amusing, but I won’t spoil it for you. The fifth chapter is some sort of bonus story both written and drawn by Dave Crosland. He’s got quite the creepy art style, and it’s okay, but not my favorite. The story is an interesting “what-if” scenario, but it’s almost certainly not canon with the rest of the volumes. Interesting, though.Welp, if you are an Invader Zim fan, know about these comics, and have made it this far (assuming you are reading in order), then there’s no reason not to get this. Seriously, go get it!

Daughter loves these books!

Invader Zim nuff said

My nephew and my boyfriend love it.

Another great hardcover book about our favorite overlord Zim, this one comes with issues 11-20 and like the last one it has all the varient cover art! Highly recommend!

invader ZIM!! whats not to love

While Zim is plotting to use a Flamin' Hot Cheezos factory to take over the world (as only Zim can) Gir starts to malfunction and Zim decides that dealing with the virus making Gir try to kill him is more important than his Cheezos plan. When all his antivirus software fails him, Zim has to enter Gir's brain to deal with the virus himself. Once that adventure is finished, Zim, Gir, Dib and Gaz are all involved in a mind swapping accident in which Gaz ends up in Zim's body and decides to show him how taking over the world should be done. This was Invader Zim adventures at their best. Gir turns into a killer robot. Zim has to go into Gir's brain, which is, of course, a psycho world. And there are nods to all my favorite Zim episodes (Gir Goes Crazy, Waffles, etc.)! It was delightful. (And I actually think the Cheezos plan might have worked so it is probably a good thing Gir malfunctioned when he did.) Gaz taking over the world in the final episode was scary in all the best ways. Probably my favorite Invader Zim graphic novel yet.Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. There are some attempted murders (that all fail), a big explosion (that might or might not injure some), virtual entities getting destroyed, but it is that kind of cartoon where in the next episode they'll reappear perfectly fine.

“Cooking with Your Instant Pot Mini” by Heather Schlueter is far superior to the “Mini Instant Pot Cookbook” by Laurel Sanders. Each recipe is clear and concise without any misspellings or grammatical mistakes. The typeset is easy to read and the page layout is professional; not as if the author just downloaded recipes off the Internet and copied them without proofreading them. There are color photos inside the book in a separate section. If you’re as new to pressure cooking as I am, I highly recommend buying Heather Schlueter’s cookbook, which is authorized by Instant Pot.

I just got this book today, and already read it front to back! This book explains little hints and tricks for using the instant pot mini, such as explaining the differences between types of releases for pressure cooking. I like that each recipe is broken down into preparation time, cooking time and release time. Unlike other reviews, it doesn’t bother me that there aren’t pictures with every recipe as it leaves more room on the page for instructions. The layout of each recipe flows well, and has a list of ingredients that stands out and doesn’t blend in with the rest of the instructions. As soon as I make a few recipes I will update the review on their accuracy. So far 5 stars!

Lovely book! Every recipe I have tried in this book has been a hit so far. This accessible cookbook helped me dive into Instant Pot cooking with ease. The Mac and cheese, eggplant parm casserole, broccoli cheddar soup, Korean chicken bowls and sweet potato curry are highlights for me so far. I also brought the mashed potatoes with cauliflower to a Friendsgiving dinner and everyone loved them. I can’t wait to cook my way through the rest of this book and felt compelled to spread the word! Amazing to read! Thanks!

Interesting book! Salads, sauces, soups, as well as you can cook any kind of meat ... I found many new and amazing recipes in this cookbook. Hummus, which I prepared two days ago, caused delight in my husband. This is one of his most favorite dishes. You do not need to be a cook to cook and delight your family, it is enough to have good cooking options.

Lovely book! We love this book! Even looking through it my 3 year old would say “I like that” “I want that” on every photo. The recipes we’ve made have been delicious. Everyone has loved what has been made (children and adults). It is also great how so many recipes work for dietary restrictions. We have vegan friends and family, friends with egg allergies, we are GF and dairy free and it’s just great to have options. Great to have! Awesome

Nice! Well was so excited that she got a new cookbook. I don't even have a instapot but I got this for my aunt for Christmas because I know she has one. The recipes are so delicious and healthy. I feel so confident making these recipes. I'm even going to try them without an instapot. I would definitely get this cookbook and any other ones by her and you won't regret it. Amazing cookbook! Lovely

Cool! This book is so easy to follow. I bought an instant pot a few months ago, but have been too intimidated to use it...until this book came along. Not only does it give delicious and easy to follow recipes, it also gives you tips and directions on how to use your instant pot. He has provided so many options and alternatives to meet dietary restrictions. Liam is amazing! Awesome book!

This book has so many recipes that use real food and ingredients that I either already have on hand or would also use for multiple recipes. A great guide to getting the most out of the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker. Once I started reading this I realized I need a copy as a reference. After reading, Recipes come out just like pictures which are really incredible. Overall, easy to read, simple recipes that anyone can do!

Review

“This is a courageous, judicious, and well-written book that refuses to yield to knee-jerk responses or politically correct narratives, but rather insists on setting the comfort women within broader historical and cultural contexts. Sympathetic and sensitive, C. Sarah Soh nevertheless challenges both feminist and ethnic nationalist paradigms in an astonishing display of objectivity. The Comfort Women is a lucid, brave, and important work.” (Gail Lee Bernstein, author of Isami’s House: Three Centuries of a Japanese Family)"C. Sarah Soh’s study of ‘comfort women’ offers a close-grained yet compassionate analysis of this disturbing experience. She cogently deploys ethnography and history to illuminate a crucial case in gender and international issues.” (James L. Peacock, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)“This is a dispassionate, careful, well-researched, and brave book. Embedding her story in the whole history of prostitution and abusive treatment of women from the colonial period to the present, Soh shows that the comfort women system partook not just of the authoritarian politics of Japanese colonialism, but was also deeply rooted in a Korean patriarchy whose effects continued on after 1945. I expect this book will be the standard work on the subject for some time.” (Bruce Cumings, University of Chicago)"A brave and impressive book that usefully complicates and adds layers to our understanding of a sordid system." (Jeff Kingston Japan Times)“Since 1991, when Korean comfort women first stepped forward to demand compensation, much has been written about the Japanese military comfort system. Through careful anthropological work, Soh adds to knowledge about this system and provides a nuanced context within which to understand it. . . . In this courageous book, Soh succeeds in her aspiration to write against both adversarial ethnonationalisms and ahistorical international feminisms.” (Choice)

After rereading the book recently, I have renewed respect for Professor Soh – she has taken a very courageous step to reject the ‘master narrative’ of the comfort women issue by providing so much on the historical background of Korea as well as revealing information on many of the comfort women survivors, facts that are conveniently left out by activists of the redress movement. It is no wonder that Chong Dae Hyup, the main organization that promotes the movement in South Korea, no longer wants to do anything with Professor Soh, but her name not being on the list of academics supporting the 2015 Open Letter in Support of Historians in Japan, an attempt to pressure Japan to further acknowledge and once again account for the ‘past wrongs,’ really speaks volumes.More than anyone in American academia, she fully understands the complexity of the issue as demonstrated in her extensive research, and she is undoubtedly the most qualified to discuss the matter objectively, having received education in Japanese, Korean, and English. Moreover, she is currently a resident and scholar in the United States, making her independent of any activist groups from overseas, which allows her to speak freely without compromising academic integrity. While I personally do not support transnational feminism which is what the professor identifies herself with, this book must be thoroughly studied in order to partake in any reasonable discussion on the issue of Imperial Japan’s Comfort Women system. A solid 4.5 stars for the depth of the research and the overall objectivity that is maintained throughout the book.

This book provides a much-needed alternate angle of the comfort women experiences. Because the era and the situation was so tragic, most accounts are written in a narrative that everything was terrible, all of these women hated every aspect of their miserable lives, and that is the only way to interpret this time in history. C. Sarah Soh comes in and offers to tell the largely ignored accounts of the women that had neutral or even positive things to say about things that happened to them. She is not glorifying anything that happened at this time, just offering the testimonies that do not fit into the popular narrative. The events of this period are still tragic, and I support the survivors' seeking closure by way of an official apology, but I appreciate being able to see more sides of the situation to get a fuller picture.Only fours stars because sometimes the writing got awkward, like when she would unnecessarily provide the Korean pronunciation for a random word. Some made sense because they were thematic and appeared often throughout the book, but others seemed to just be there as a reminder that you are reading about people in another country who spoke another language.

... and most definitely NOT for casual readers or those who are not willing to re-examine their preconceived ideas and views of the wartime comfort women. This work is likewise ill-suited for those who aren't serious readers of history.C. Sarah Soh, as a native Korean who was fortunate to receive formal education both in her homeland and abroad, has produced a masterful examination of a controversial issue involving Korea and Japan which people from both countries have long oversimplified.Koreans generally believe that Imperial Japan's leadership ordered, planned, and executed the gunpoint kidnapping of thousands of Korean females and summarily shipped them like chattel to frontline brothels.Japanese people - at least those who know this issue - either agree that the Koreans were largely victimized, or claim that this is a gross fabrication and that the comfort women were essentially willing prostitutes.Professor Soh cites several examples, such as interviews with survivors, to show that the truth is far more complex. Some survivors stated they were not forcibly taken by Japanese troops. Others are shown to have bought their way to freedom with earnings - earnings??? Yes. Hence the question - if the comfort women were slaves, they wouldn't have had wages. Then what were they: slaves or prostitutes or something else?Additionally, Professor Soh does the reader a huge service by detailing the sociocultural contexts of 1930s-1940s Korea and Japan. Information on views on sex, women, and the sexism that characterized pre-modern Korean and Japanese societies is provided, thus presenting the reader with a better understanding of what facilitated the existence of "sex care work" in both societies. Anyone familiar with Korea and Japan today will be aware that extramarital affairs have been generally tolerated, historically speaking, and that older men have often availed themselves of sexual services provided by far younger women. The comfort women issue did not happen in a vacuum. Japanese generals didn't wake up one day, deciding to 'award' their enlisted men with females to sate their urges, and they didn't decide to violently seize thousands of Korean women at will. As a reader of Korean ethnicity myself, I know this is a painful subject, and I personally believe there were abductions. But as the attentive reader will see, the story is far more diverse and much more complicated that flag-waving nationalists on either side of the East Sea (or, as some call it, the Sea of Japan), would want us to believe. It is worth noting (somewhat of a spoiler alert) that Professor Soh was shunned and coldly treated by South Koreans who are involved in the redress movement after those activists learned of the fruits of her research. I wonder why. Did Professor Soh's findings upset their ostensibly benign agenda? Is there something she uncovered the redress activists preferred not to even know and prefer that their compatriots remain ignorant of?If the comfort women issue is of any interest to you, read this book. It is a must-have in the library of any serious student of Korea's modern history.

Fantastic work viewing the comfort women issue in light of gender issues. Well-researched and footnoted, and yet written in a very accessible way that's an easy read.

I enjoyed reading this book, because it has a balanced yet in-depth look at the Comfort Women in Korea. It was educating yet sobering to learn about all the different complicated circumstances that lead to militarized prostitution.

it`s good!!

This has become a painful read. Not the material - just the author and her facination with big words. It's been mentioned previously in other comments. She also loves to add suffixes to make basic words seem big as well. Overall the book doesn't flow well. I've still got to finish the book for a college class but dreading it.
