“Ikigai urges individuals to simplify their lives by pursuing what sparks joy for them. . . . Much in the same way that The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up emphasizes ‘choosing what we want to keep, and not what we want to get rid of,’ [Ikigai] demonstrates that aging could be an opportunity to keep working, keep smiling, keep active, and keep being social even as centenarians.” —KonMari Newsletter“Want to live longer? Keep super busy. If hygge is the art of doing nothing, ikigai is the art of doing something—and doing it with supreme focus and joy. . . . Pack up those cozy blankets and candles you purchased in last year’s hygge-fueled Ikea spree. Fall’s biggest imported lifestyle trend is ikigai, and it might help you live to 100.” —New York Post“Busy-ness is a concept I’m familiar with and fascinated by, especially living in New York City. . . . The rather exotic sounding name of this book, ikigai, as the authors explain, is relatively straightforward. “This Japanese concept, which translates roughly as “the happiness of always being busy,” is, “like logotherapy, but it goes a step beyond.” Logotherapy, they explain, “…helps people find their purpose in life.”It is a good book. My overall rating of the book has little to do with the quality of the writing or the underlying concept. The former is quite good and the latter is valid. My rating is strictly personal and relates more to who might be considering adding it to their reading list. Not a “don’t,” for sure. More like, “understand it for what it is.”For those who are ardent fans of all things philosophical and psychological, as I am, this is a good book that plows relatively little new ground. Finding purpose in life, keeping busy, eating well, and finding connection to the world around you is important. It’s ground, however, that has been covered by many authors over the years. If you haven’t sampled of these past triumphs you will enjoy this book very much. It is a great and easily read introduction to the topics of longevity and the benefits of living in the moment. And it chronicles many of the philosophies and prior contributions to the topic, from Buddhism to Stoicism, with a stop at the Serenity Prayer. Eastern, and particularly Japanese, contributions are given extra attention. Wabi-sabi and ichi-go ischi-e, for example, are explained in some detail, but remain an overview. Relatively newer concepts like antifragility are also explained. It even covers the Six Healing Sounds introduced by Sun Simiao in the sixth century. (This one was new to me.)A lot of the book turns on Ogimi, in the Okinawa Prefecture in Japan, which holds the distinction of being the oldest village on the planet. (In that many of the residents have lived very long lives.) It’s a delightful visit. Having lived in China for nine years and having visited Japan many times over the course of more than three decades, I have a deep fondness for places like Ogimi. I’m not sure, however, that they aren’t byproducts of the totality of Japanese culture. Could they take seed in places like California or Virginia, for example?Part of my ikigai is to be a nice person and not think disparagingly of anyone. And I am not here. This book was an interesting read for me, and may be a revelational read for you. I make no judgment on that. I just give you my experience as a reader. This book would, in my opinion, make an excellent gift for anyone in your life that might need a little boost or is otherwise hard to buy for. There is absolutely nothing here that could meet with controversy or resistance. It is decidedly upbeat throughout. And that is saying a lot of good things about any book.

The book felt disjointed. It wandered all over the place touching multiple concepts, but there was really very little substance to any of it. It felt like a series of loosely-rated articles that reviewed works or research by other people all presented together in one book. The stories from the supercentenarians were lovely and most of the comments from them made me smile. The chapter discussing yoga, tai chi, etc. was a joke. I thought the wrap-up chapter might finally bring it all together, but it fell short, too. There were a handful of quotes by others that I found interesting. The venn diagram in the beginning, which can readily be found on-line, is the most thought-provoking part of the book.

This is a beautifully designed but extremely shallow book. The notion of "Ikigai" seems like a kind of footnote to the discussion of the Singapore diet and lifestyle--and I learned more about that from an article I read in an airline magazine many years ago. Usually I don't like to post negative reviews of books, but this seemed to me like such a lazy endeavor that I had to speak out.

I feel this book fetishises Japanese culture to a degree where it’s categorizing all Japanese as tidy, focused, and knowing what they want out of life.I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. It’s nice that the author has such a positive view of Japan, but I would prefer if they hadn’t spent 30 pages espousing how amazing Japan is compared to everywhere else. And it is amazing, I’ve lived there and have visited many times since I moved away. This is simply too much.

Based on the title and my understanding of the definition of "ikigai", I was expecting this book to be more about finding one's purpose or calling in life. It does mention it a little bit and makes references to Viktor Frankl's logotherapy work but otherwise didn't go into the finding purpose aspect very much. It was much more focused on how to live a long life, which should be no surprise considering that is also in the title. Even though it wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, it was an interesting, light and enjoyable read.

If you could live longer, would you want to? Most people believe that happiness in life requires a sense of purpose, but how do you know what it is? The authors share a Japanese philosophy for finding your ikigai, your reason for being; increasing the happiness and balance in your life while staying active into old age. They spoke to some of the oldest people in the world (living in Okinawa, Japan) and share their secrets within this book."According to the Japanese, everyone has an ikigai—what a French philosopher might call a raison d'etre. Some people have found their ikigai, while others are still looking, though they carry it within them. Our ikigai is hidden deep inside each of us, and finding it requires a patient search. According to those born on Okinawa, the island with the most centenarians in the world, our ikigai is the reason we get up in the morning."

Part explanation and part how-to, this easy-to-follow book gives its readers a look into the lives of a community of people on Okinawa who are credited with being some of the longest-lived people on Earth. The authors share stories, comments, and scientific findings as well as the food, work, movement exercises, and beliefs that these supercentarians make use of every single day---ways of living that they believe have allowed them to live such happy, long lives. Just using the spiritually based movement practices described and illustrated in the second half of the book will go far in helping readers to enter the flow as they find their own ikigai; their particular way to invite in happiness.

Story of the Orchestra : Listen While You Learn About the Instruments, the Music and the Composers Who Wrote the Music!, by Robert Levine

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-Orchestra Bob guides readers through a delightful musical journey. The book is divided into two major parts: composers from Vivaldi to Bernstein and their associated musical periods, and the instruments of the orchestra. There are interesting and sometimes humorous bits of information about the men, their music, and corresponding historical events. The last two pages introduce the conductor. Quotations, boxed definitions, and the captions that accompany the colorful photos and spot cartoon drawings enhance the instructive text. In some places, however, the drawings are in stark contrast to the photos and take away from the overall appearance of a page. An accompanying CD provides musical selections for readers to listen to at specific places in the text. These selections are short enough to keep young listeners' attention. Although some well-known figures, such as Handel, Schubert, and Strauss, are missing, this is a fun way to travel through the world of music.Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NECopyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-7. Orchestra Bob--a dapper figure in a dove-gray tux--introduces young people first to the development and history of orchestral music and a number of famous composers and then to the instruments of the orchestra by section. Each page or two is keyed to a brief selection on an accompanying CD that illustrates the musical idea or instrument discussed. Text and images are extremely lively: the drawings are whimsical and often amusing; the photographs of the individual instruments are clear and clearly labeled. Text rarely extends for more than a paragraph or two before a box, a quote, or a related comment appears, making the pages very inviting. Children will absorb how various instruments are held and played. Levine relates the sound and sense of music in ways children will respond to easily: a quote describes the double bass as sounding like chocolate. The CD excerpts are crisply presented--one would wish to know who recorded them. GraceAnne DeCandidoCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

We've had this out from the library for a long time. My son loved it and listened to the music frequently. Finally I decided to buy a copy. He was so excited. but while it looks exactly the same, it's not! It's missing a few songs, and has a couple different ones. I thought he would like this one anyway, but he doesn't. and it's too late for us to return it. There should be some indication somewhere that these CD/books with the same cover and title and everything are not the same. Even reading the reviews on Amazon, you don't know if they are for this book or the other.

I bought this book for my eight-year old son to acquaint him with orchestral instruments, but have thoroughly enjoyed it myself. It presents the information in a logical, fun, easily understandable manner that will benefit a musical novice regardless of age. The illustrations are fantastic, and the CD is an indespensible complement that provides a fuller understanding of the concepts explained in the text.

Used this book in a home school study. LOVED IT! It was really fun. We enjoyed the pieces of music from the artists. Now that we are done we just like to listen to the CD in the car. Also we went to see an orchestra when we were done. I would recommend it to everyone. Whether you home school or not. All kids should be introduced to orchestra. I can't even count the times that my girls have noticed the orchestra music in movies, cartoons, hearing it playing in stores.... Well worth it!

Fun book that gives you a one page factoid about an artist along with a CD of a small piece of one of their compositions. Nice simple introduction to classical music with fun drawings and interesting facts. Music is songs that will be familiar to you and your kids. My two kids are really enjoying it!

My kids love this book. We homeschool and I have been using this as part of our music curriculum this year. The book is very nicely laid out.. This CD that goes along with it is perfect for young kids being introduced to orchestra music. It's fun and easy to use. I would highly recommend this to other homeschoolers and also to music teachers. Great addition to our library!

Amazon, as usual, has done a great job delivering the package well in time. Unfortunately, the book itself is a big disappointment. It looks as though it was designed for smaller children but the complex language, and the fact that there is a CD (in 2019!) that requires a separate playback device, make it pretty useless for say 4 or 5 year olds. What's more, the selection of composers for each period is completely incompetent or perhaps selected with something else than music in mind. The Romantic era, for example, includes Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Mahler but no Chopin or Berlioz, widely recognized as more prominent representatives of the period. Why would that be? At least we get Copland and Bernstein in The Modern Era... Save your money! There are many better books out there which introduce classical music to our kids in a much more competent way.

One of the best things I've given to my daughter. What a wonderful tool for teaching a child music appreciation. Delightful and really fun! My soon-to-be-five-year-old couldn't wait to read and listen again today. We didn't go through the entire book in one sitting, but have left more for tomorrow again. She was up and dancing, and telling me what she heard in the music. Very well-done, authors and publishers!

I love the book and CD overall. It is educational and interesting for all ages. But one thing that bothers me is that all treble cleffs in the illustrations are mirror written. Wish those were correctly drawn for educational purpose.

If you have ever felt baffled by the Old Testament and wondered how it relates to the New Testament, this is the book for you. I've been a serious student of the Bible (at a layman's level) for nearly a decade, and I couldn't see the forest for the trees. After reading this book, the big picture of salvation history finally began to reveal itself to me.The author is a convert to the Catholic faith from Protestantism. He is a professor of theology and has received honors for his outstanding teaching ability.Bergsma has taken college-level concepts and packaged them in an entertaining and easy-to-read format with stick-figure drawings to illustrate his points. He bases his text around the Old Testament covenants God made with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and David, all leading to fulfillment in the Eucharistic covenant of Jesus Christ. Through his discussion of these covenants, Bergsma covers the history of God's interaction with his people throughout the books of the Old Testament in a clear and compelling overview. At only 180 pages, the book is a short read, but it is crammed with information. It is appropriate for teen-agers and adults. It is an excellent supplement to more detailed books on the Bible that you may be reading. Highly recommended.

My 14 year old son was assigned this book in a home school co-op class. I am so glad that I read it with him! I am a Catholic who goes to Mass several times a week and most of my reading is about my faith, but I have never read anything that so simply and clearly ties salvation history together the way Dr. Bergsma's little book does. Dr. Bergsma illustrates the book with stick figures, which perfectly reflects the simplicity of his message. In a strange way, this book has also opened my eyes to the beauty of the Church's teaching on marriage and family life. Dr. Bergsma says in the beginning of the book that a covenant relationship is a family relationship. Since the family, especially the relationship of the husband and wife, are signs of Christ's relationship with his bride, the Church, then of course the Church has to emphasize fidelity and indissolubility. How could marriage be a true covenant relationship, a reflection of Christ and the Church, if marriage was something that could be abandoned? This thought has meant a great deal to me as I reflect on Pope Francis's recent apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia. Finally, I have to give special thanks to Dr. Bergsma for generously responding to a question I had about the book. I had been taught that the Old Testament is considered largely to be myth, and I wondered how we could base our understanding on covenant stories that were themselves, basically, "made up". He responded very quickly and let me know that the biblical understanding I was taught is simply a modern idea, and that no Church documents support that idea. It is not correct to see Old Testament stories as "made up".I would highly recommend this book and am so glad that it came to my attention through my son's school work.

Covenant is the clearest and shortest road to understanding Salvation History, particularly from a Catholic point of view. There are several terrific 'popular' books out there, one being 'A Father Who Keeps His Promises', by Scott Hahn. However, I do not believe the latter is for someone unfamiliar with the Bible. 'Bible Basics for Catholics' is a true primer; it keeps the story focused, brief and on task. The Bible is a library of books that tells one great story. Bible Basics for Catholics (and anyone who wants a very good primer the big picture) demonstrates the continuity and unity of scripture with simplicity and depth. Bergsma provides new ways of looking at various elements of the story, none of which changed my understanding but rather, made my understanding fuller. Very important to me as a catechist, Bergsma gave me alternative explanations to various story elements that are often difficult for people to understand and accept.A few years earlier a part of a theology certification program, we were studying the Old Testament. The Professor, also a priest, told us we could essentially toss out the first 5 books of the Bible, what was important were the prophets. The 'stores' were myths that an ancient people used to explain their world, but more importantly, some of the stories were horrific. God telling the Hebrews to kill everyone, men, women and children, livestock when invading Canaan. How ridiculous! Or his disgust with the horror of the story of the testing of Abraham. How could we tell that story to children? That Abraham would kill his only child...now we as a class said, "It never gave us nightmares, we got it." Bergsma highlights the fact that based upon the story, Isaac was not a 'little boy' but probably a 'strapping youth'. He had to carry the wood for the sacrifice up the hill, something a child could not do. He then says quite logically, that given his age and size, he must have willingly accepted his role as sacrificial lamb. Like Jesus, Isaac, the only begotten son of Abraham, willingly accepts God's command. So, we no longer have a horror story, but a stronger story of faith and a piece of the continuity of the story; Isaac is a 'type' for Jesus. Wish we'd seen the details like that back then!I would recommend this book to everyone new to scripture or not. I think it is especially appropriate for RCIA and can be adapted for middle school and high school CCD. The drawings are perfect! If you are interested, there is saved Webinar online, The Bible in an Hour on Vimeo. Bergsma takes you through the covenants in less than an hour and it is a terrific presentation.

John Bergsma did a masterful job of walking us through the Bible. He begins with the basics of the Old Testament and then ties the covenants set forth therein with the teachings and life of Jesus. A must read for all Catholics, especially those who wish to gain knowledge and insight into the Old Testament and its important relationship with the New Testament.

It's okay with the summarization of the Shakespeare's plays but the summary, itself, was a bit too short for my liking.

Great book. I love the story. The author did a wonderful job. I love the entire series. Can't wait to ready the next one!

The Tales of Shaksspear is a good book for ages 12 and up. the book has great stories to read great book to read on the road check out at an libary or get it online. great for seven year olds as well./ i enjoyed this book myself as a reader who loves to read the adventures are awesome . Kids and young adults would enjoy this book a lot because some may not have tv.. reading is good for all ages .i recomend this book to everyone

Ehhhhhhhh. It's not that this book is bad. It's excellent for the thing that it is. Just the thing that it is, is boring. I got this to make me go to sleep, and it works. Better than Ambien! The kindle edition seemed to have some formatting and typographical issues, which I guess we can chalk up to its being in the public domain. And it was free, so I guess I can't complain.

I loved this book!! It included alot of good Shakespeare plays, and I didn't have to endure that dreaded kings english. I HATE KINGS ENGLISH!!! As You Like It, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, and the Twelth Night, all in UNDERSTANDABLE english. What more could a girl ask for? 'Sides a laptop...Anyway, Charles and Mary Lamb tie all the needs of a Shakespeare-loving-Kings-english-hating- audience.

I love the free books for the Kindle. They greatly expand our homeschool reading beyond what we can find at our library as well as allow us to keep a copy as long as we need.

Very helpful. I did a 8-day backpacking trip in the Northern Winds in Aug 2017 and this book was very helpful for planning the trip. It's a bit bulky to carry on a multi-day trip so I photocopied the key pages. It is well written with interesting general background about the range, and it has very comprehensive coverage of the peaks. I am not a technical climber so can't comment on that aspect, although it has lots of route descriptions for technical routes. I'm a scrambler - fine on class III and ok with a bit of class IV - whose goal is to reach the high summits, and for this it is ideal. The descriptions of the trails, passes and summit routes were clear and (in my experience) accurate without being excessively detailed. It does not include topo maps (I used Larson/Earthwalk Press) but it does have trail maps of each area, which are helpful for getting an overview and planning approach routes. Similar in spirit to Secor's guide to the Sierras, but with nice color photos. Highly recommended.

I have used this guide book for the last 30 to 40 years. I lost my copy so this is why I purchased this one. I'm a 71 year old man and will no longer be climbing in the Wind's but will still backpack to the Cirque of the Towers this Summer and take in the scenery and do a little trout fishing. The book lets you fill in the adventure and do the discovering on your own. If you need to know every turn on every trail this guide book is not for you bot for the adventurer in you I highly advise it. TomP

In fall 1994, I flew from Cincinnati to Salt Lake City on one leg of a business trip return flight. The flight went farther north than expected, but toward the end it had to head SW toward Salt Lake. I had a window seat and realized I would be flying over the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming! I knew of them, but had never seen them before. I looked down and in a few minutes they appeared ... towering peaks, shining lakes, and glaciers. I knew then that I had to plan a backpack trip to them. Later, upon looking at maps, I realized I had flown right over the high peaks portion of the Wind Rivers ... Gannett Peak, Fremont Peak, Titcomb Basin ... followed by Fremont Lake at the base of the range. When I got home, I looked for Wind River guidebooks and Joe Kelsey's "Climbing and Hiking in the Wind River Mountains, 2nd Edition" was the best. I immediately purchased it and started planning. I made three separate backpack trips to the Wind River Mountains with the help of the book. I have been in areas from Titcomb Basin in the north to Cirque of the Towers in the south. I am a scrambler (nothing over Class 3), but for the hiking part and the scrambling part, the book was excellent. When I saw that this 3rd edition was available, I purchased copies for myself and friends and can see that it is still the same excellent (and expanded/improved) guidebook. It reminds me that I need to get back to the Wind River Mountains again. Besides all the information, the photos (many with climbing routes shown) are beautiful. One thing that Mr. Kelsey does well (that other guidebooks usually don't do) is have a subsection in each section that describes the mountain passes/cols and off-trail routes in sufficient detail, whether they are well known/designated passes or lesser known passes/cols and off-trail routes. I specifically benefited from his descriptions of Pass 11,120+ (Island Lake to Wall Lake; page 182 in the new 3rd edition), Monument Creek Route (Monument Creek to Pole Creek; page 208), and Pass 11,640+ (East Fork Valley to Bonneville Lake; page 257) ... I used all these passes/routes in my trips to the Wind Rivers and the descriptions (in the 2nd edition I used then ... and expanded in the new 3rd edition) saved valuable time/effort.I corresponded by letter with Mr. Kelsey in 1999 and I can see that he incorporates such discussion in future work. For example, on page 157 in the new 3rd edition, he expanded the Knapsack Col discussion, saying that one should bring along an ice ax for the Twins Glacier side of Knapsack Col (this was a subject in our 1999 correspondence).Anyone who loves backpacking and/or climbing has to experience the Wind River Mountains ... and they need the new 3rd edition of this guidebook.

Lots of good info if your planing a trip to the Winds

Excellent book, and definitive for this region. I'm especially pleased that the author was able to correct an error about a "Wolf's Head" climb that had slipped into the second edition.

This has great route information - very detailed. However, it really is more of a climbing/scrambling guide. If you really want hiking trail info, go with the falcon Wind Rivers hiking book.

Great, interesting read. A good addition to any book shelf. As Kelsey says in the intro, this book is NOT a detailed guidebook in terms of technical route descriptions. It is very vague when describing descent options, belay locations, routes or pretty much anything. For anyone considering going to the winds for the first time, this book is great to get a general layout of the area and an idea for a new adventure, but should not be relied upon if you don't know the area or have experience climbing/hiking there.I can see the appeal of keeping the ethics in the winds and the sense of adventure, but lots of confusing/conflicting/misleading and missing information in this book. Just a heads up.For the cirque, "cirque of the towers and deep lake" by Bechtel is a much better choice because it is more detailed and reliable.

We can't wait to find new hikes and enjoy the Wind River Mountains!

The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit: And Its Impact on World History, by E. Michael Jones

Review

"One of the most important books one can read on the topic is the massive work The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit and Its Impact on World History, by E. Michael Jones. Mr. Jones provides documentation for his major historical theses, often from recognized Jewish historians. ... the basic point is clearly demonstrated: 'Judaism' under the rabbinic schools and the Talmud since 70 A.D. is significantly different from the revealed religion of the patriarchs and Moses, and the community of Jews who disbelieve Jesus of Nazareth will always produce a certain number of individuals whose ideas and actions objectively undermine, in characteristic ways, the influence of Christian faith in society. If a reader keeps this in mind, and Jones says as much in his own way, then his understanding of the Gospel and of history will be enriched without having to a priori suspect all Jews of nefarious designs against the Church." Rorate Caeli"What is the thesis that has gotten Jones in all this hot water? He says that throughout the past two thousand years, whenever there has been a major movement opposed to the Catholic Church, the Jews have tended to side with those movements, whether religious, social or political. ... Now the question: why should this thesis be considered anti-Semitic? The answer: I have no idea. Are Jones' critics claiming that the Jews have always agreed with the Catholic Church? ... Jones makes a case that the Church has had to defend itself on more than one occasion from revolutionary movements in which the Jews played a part, small or large, and the Jews consequently faced the resentment of Christians afterwards. ... But the really hot stuff is his discussion of the neo-conservatives. Eyebrows will go up. However, here and throughout the book, his research and analysis is comprehensive and calm. The veins never bulge from Jones' neck; if there is Jew hatred here, it is immensely cunning. I would hope that Jones' critics would give him a fair reading rather than continuing to arrange to have his public appearances cancelled. They're not helping their own case - whatever that case is. It's really hopeless when anyone who tries to discuss the Jews is instantly accused of being anti-Semitic if his conclusions point out any Jewish misbehavior." Bradley Rothstein, Gilbert Magazine"Jones is a Roman Catholic, and one of the focuses of his book, perhaps the main one, is the gradual erosion, over a number of centuries, of the Church's power and authority in Europe, a process in which Jews, as the author shows, played very key and very active roles every step of the way (along with the help of willing Christians), and the eventual displacement of that authority by the rising tide of Jewish power. This is an extremely important area of study because for many, many centuries it was the Catholic Church that kept Jewish power in check." Richard Edmondson, deLiberation.

Stunning work, massive scope.Forget Cultural Marxism. Marx is just a little dot in the full image. The book is a rewrite of standard (Whig) history starting at the foot of the cross, up through modern American politics and NeoConservatism, from the Catholic Perspective. This book ties together the work of Josephus, Voltaire, Pat Buchanan (Death of the West) and Paul Gottfried (Multiculturalism) into one neat ideological thread explaining much of European history. The messianic spirit of the modern leftist cultural attacks is traced to its root as the rejection of Christ (Logos). The bizarre civil war of the Jews as described by Josephus (fighting against the Romans) is carried forward and the good cop/bad cop routine of the radical/pseudo-conservative Jewish activists is exposed. The book also explains in detail (from the origins) the WASP/Protestant tendency to support the insane cultural agenda of the Jewish revolutionaries by describing the philo-Judaic theology and origins of these movements. The section on Bolshevism is devastating to the standard canard that associating Jews and Bolshevism is a no-no.This book is a must for every counter revolutionary, although, by the end of the journey you are likely to be a Catholic counter revolutionary.

This is one of the few books I've read that is both entertaining and scholarly. The writing is so clear and economical, and the subject so compelling, that it is hard to put the book down even though it weighs in at 1,200 pages. At the same time, the level of detail is almost staggering. By reading this book, you will get a thorough education in history, politics, religion, psychology, economics, and sociology all rolled into one beautifully integrated package. And you will learn things that mainstream publishers, school teachers and university professors would not dare to tell you. My only criticism is that the author might consider publishing the book in two volumes rather than one. 1,200 pages is long for one volume, and you have to handle the book carefully to avoid damaging its spine.

Another meticulous, scholarly work by Dr. Jones. I think the quotes which best amplify the reality of "The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit" are on pages 40 and 41:"By rejecting Logos, which was simultaneously the person of Christ and the order in the universe, including the moral order, which sprang from the divine mind, the 'Jew' found himself drawn inexorably to revolution. ... The rejection of Christ was intimately bound up with the acceptance of Barabbas, the Zealot, i,e., choosing the revolutionary Jew over the suffering Christ."As a boy, among the first books I read were the Hardy Boys mysteries. I graduated from these to Agatha Christi novels. When I began watching TV, among the first shows I watched were detective shows like "Cannon", Barnaby Jones", and "The Rockford Files". This interest has continued over the years and so in the past quarter century I've watched shows like those in the various "Law & Order" series created by Dick Wolf. These shows have often portrayed the Catholic priest as an evildoer. Nuns, lay Catholics, Christians, and others wearing crosses around their necks have been depicted as hypocrites, committing the worst crimes. "Thugs of the Cross", I like to call them. With this in mind, I couldn't help when receiving Dr. Jones' book but go to the specifically cultural chapter in the book, chapter 31, "The Jewish Takeover of American Culture", PP. 959-986. Make no mistake about it, the movies, TV, and entertainment in general have been used as instruments of cultural change, as tools of propaganda forming those who think they're wise but are really just lemmings. Along these lines, I can't help but mention a passage about pornographer Al Goldstein on page 1024:"When Luke Ford asked Al Goldstein, the publisher of Screw, why so many Jews were involved in pornography, Goldstein got to the theological heart of the matter. 'The only reason that Jews are in pornography,' Goldstein responded, 'Is that we think that Christ sucks. Catholicism sucks."This quote of Goldstein's comes from chapter 32, "The Neoconservative Era". As I write this on February 9, 2016, voting in the New Hampshire presidential primaries has started. Donald Trump is expected to score a significant victory. Trump keeps saying that he said at the time, the War in Iraq was a terrible mistake. He also says the U.S. negotiates the worst trade deals and that he's going to get our jobs back from places like China and Mexico. Has the comeuppance of the neocons in the Republican Party started? I think it has. Time will tell. The Life issues, and particularly abortion, remain paramount to me. And so I highly recommend chapter 28, "Jews and Abortion", PP. 917-922. Abortionist Bernard Nathanson, who committed tend of thousands of abortions before converting to Catholicism, is mentioned in this chapter and on PP. 988, 989. What an incredible witness to the Divine Mercy, in this Holy Year of Mercy called by Pope Francis, the late Dr. Nathanson is. Incidentally, chapter 29 is entitled "The Black Panthers", PP. 923-942. A current controversy revolves around singer Beyoncé, a performer during last night's Super Bowl halftime show. Her backup dancers during her performance were dressed as members of the Black Panthers.I can't remember if it's in this book or in his excellent monthly, "Culture Wars", but Dr. Jones has said that while 9 out of 10 revolutionaries are Jewish, only 1 in 10 Jewish people are revolutionaries. And so, readers of this book must remember a quote from the Second Vatican Council's Nostra Aetate on page 38:"Even though the Jewish authorities and those who followed their lead pressed for the death of Christ (cf. John 19:6), neither all Jews indiscriminately at that time, nor Jews today, can be charged with the crimes committed during his passion. It is true that the Church is the new people of God, yet the Jews should not be spoken of as rejected or accursed as if this followed from the Holy Scripture."

It took me a long time to read this book because some of the things in it are so unbelievable that I had to stop reading in order to get some additional info. before I could go on. I was able to verify as factual everything I initially doubted. This book is a monumental work of love by an outstanding scholar that I found to be informative and enlightening.

Greatest Catholic mind of our time. I recommend all of his books.
