As a veterinarian, I was excited to read this book, but was left feeling like it missed the mark. There were so many aspects of the disease that were ignored: the paradigm shift that cats are a bigger concern than dogs, the various strains of the disease with their preferred hosts, the agonizing cases where beloved pets are euthanized premptively after exposure to wildlife, the baffling cases in livestock. Take it from someone who has sawn off more than a few heads in the fight against rabies.....there is so much more to the story!

I've been working my way through as many books on diseases as I can possibly manage. Part of it is sheer curiosity, and basically 'awe and respect' for bacteria and viruses that cause so many of our illnesses. I've been reading about this stuff since the 1990's when I was in school, and then med school. Bacteria and viruses have been here before we were, and may be here after we leave. And as anyone who teaches microbiology and pathophysiology will tell you, some of these viruses and bacteria can alter themselves to gain resistance. And we keep finding new ones to have to worry about like Zika.Having had past experience with a rabid raccoon who sat on my porch, and then threatened me when I went outside, I definitely wanted to read up on this particular 'monster'. I put this book Rabid on my 'wish' list probably two years ago. So I was thrilled to finally get it and read it. Even though this book was slow in areas where the authors went off on tangents that were remotely acquainted with the topic, the book did meet my own specifications for reading a book like this. It gave historical background, it discussed what the disease is, how it is caused, the background for the vaccine, interesting case studies that have occurred recently. For the most part, I thought the book was well-written.This is still probably one of the most frightening diseases on the planet...even with Ebola out there. Though we can vaccinate to prevent the disease and have a way to help someone who has been bitten if we get to them early enough, people still die from this agonizing disease even in the United States. I think one of the most important parts of this book was the fact that we still have no good treatments for people who were bitten and didn't know they were exposed to rabies, and so they went for treatment too late. Just this section alone should be read by everyone...then it would impress on people how important it is to get your animals vaccinated, and how important it is to avoid contact with wildlife that may harbor the rabies virus. I think of how many times I've seen children go up and touch a wild animal like a squirrel or chipmunk...and if people read this chapter on this lack of treatment, they wouldn't let their child near something that is wild. (Besides, it isn't safe for the animals either...)Good book...

I enjoyed the book but at times my frustration waxed as the author devoted an inordinate amount of space on the connections (or possible connections) between the disease caused by the rabies virus and the classic subjects of horror stories and films: vampires, werewolves and zombies. There were times when I came close to doing the unthinkable when I buy a book for leisure reading (as opposed to reference etc)- skip sections. At best 5 or 6 pages could have been devoted to the tangential connection between the rabies in popular culture and these denizens of horror literature. I just grew really tired of reading about zombies when I bought a book to read about rabies. The book is also very light on the fascinating biology of the virus itself and how it enters neurons, replicates and propagates. It seems kind of ridiculous that there can be tens of pages on zombies and vampires and essentially nothing on the molecular machinery of the virus and its transmission through an infected organism. I realize that this isn't a book on rabies virology but it is a subject which I expected to be covered in detail rather than in passing.

The premise of this book is interesting - that of the "World's Most Diabolical Virus." The execution fails in some regards. While establishing a great hook for an introduction, the book dribbles into old historical accounts of dog domestication and examples of rabies in early writings. This may appeal to armchair anthropologist, but was a bit dry and long-winded in my opinion. From there the medical history of rabies is discovered for roughly the last half. This accounting and that of the development for the rabies vaccine were the highlight of the book. The book suffered from some repetitiveness, especially in the anthropological interludes, and occasional discontinuity of thought that didn't seriously hinder the flow of the book.I'm glad I read it, and will likely loan it to a friend, but I will likely never read it again. My advice to anyone who gets the book is to skip over sections that are tedious to read and get to the interesting parts of the book. It will likely not hurt your comprehension of the book.

“A virus is a piece of bad news wrapped in a protein.” – Petaer MedawarIt could be that rabies is the worst news ever. With it’s implications of hurting man’s best friend in a shattering way to the ultimate moments of symptoms in humans that lead to hydrophobia, rabies is anything but the Stanford Daily email digest. This book provided amazing historical background to a deadly disease! Before this book, I really had no idea about the impact that rabies can have on different societies. Wasik does an amazing job at pulling together all of the different tales and case studies around rabies and creating a cohesive narrative of the rabies virus that spans back to the Greeks. However, even through his temporal progression, he manages to provide enough space for suspenseful moments and important topics like Pasteur’s creation of the rabies vaccine. Through his presentation of the clinical case and the attempt for treatment, he reminded me of problem-solving physician mindset, and allowed me to glimpse into the great mind of Dr. Willoughby. This book definitely reminded me of all the reasons behind my pursuit of medicine – from the public health, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations that rabies virus can have.

This was a very good exposition on the minor prophets. These books should be known more as the "brief" prophets. Their message was by no means minor. The author calls them the "clean pages" of the Bible, that is, the pages that are seldom read. We used it in our men's group Bible study. God's message through the minor prophets is pretty consistent throughout. A Major Point for each Bible book was helpful so that we could focus in on a unique message in each book. There is quite a bit in the book to connect the prophecies with our current situation. Sometimes, however, the author went on trails that took us a bit too far outside the message of the prophets. There is a tough balance between audience engagement and focus. One other suggestion: He quoted others quite a bit. I would have liked to have citations so that those who were interested could study them further. Another thing I'd suggest for the Kindle edition: Please put page numbers that line up with one of the print editions. That is a common problem with most Kindle books that are used in a study situation.

Great material that is easy to follow yet thoroughly researched and scholarly in content.Easy to copy key passages for reference notes or for teaching/speaking notes.

great help!

Words can not convey the depth of John Blanchard's book of the Major Points from the Minor Prophets. ..he is astounding as he explains the plight of the prophets as his explanations leap off of the pages and into ky heart.

This book met all of my expectation I am using it to teach my class. My students have order this as well.

Blanchard has done it again. This book has helped me immensely in my bible study planning on the minor prophets. His points are clear and understandable. The book printing is a nice size and the text does not cause me eye to strain. Its an easy book to carry around with plenty of margins to write in notes.

I HAVE BEEN FEELING THE URGE TO STUDY THE MINOR PROPHETS (minor in book size not in relationship with God) . THIS BOOK HAS BEEN A GREAT TOOL IN MY STUDY, WELL WRITTEN, MADE ME WANT TO CONTINUE MY MINOR PROPHETS STUDY.

This book does very little in the way of giving information, background, exegetical study, etc. It reads more like a topical sermon where the preacher bases a message in a text from the Minor Prophets then directly launches into the topic without really dealing with a text. this is an easy read and a good read but not the book for you if you're looking to really learn about the Minor Prophets.

Ok, I confess; I am addicted! Sherryl Woods created such great characters for her Sweet Magnolia series that as son as I finish one volume, I rush to read the next. There are still some organizational challenges for me as a reader: her jumps from one character and issue in one paragraph to another character and issue in another is always disconcerting. However, woods' strength comes from the broad sweep of characters with whom she people's the town of Serenity. With overlapping stories, and for the most part, their continued presence in subsequent volumes, the main characters, the two generations of Sweet Magnolias, and other peripheral characters, Woods really facilitates the readers' connection to, and identification with the residents of Serenity. Her books are similar to soap operas which allow such intimacy with the characters that you cannot give up the fascination with what is going to happen next and to whom. This volume is particularly satisfying as there is adequate closure for all the main characters as well as much-needed references to answer questions about previously featured characters. I do recommend this series although I give fair warning that you will get hooked, just as I am!

I am enjoying all of the Chesapeake Shores series books. Each character has a unique personality and each book in the series focuses on a different character...their everyday problems and happiness. One family and their grown children facing true to life situations. And they find themselves "meddleing" into one anothers business...but out of love and concern. Sex is there but in a tasteful way. The Sweet Magnolia series is wonderful, also. I like the way Ms. Woods writes...she brings a story to life. If you have read Debbie Macomber, Sheila Roberts or RayAnne Thayne books you will love these!

I love books that are in a series and Sherryl Woods really does them well. In my opinion, the Sweet Magnolias series is one of the best! She deals with timely topics and this one is no different, as it deals with domestic violence and the effect it can have on the abused! In this case because of the abuse, Raylene, the protagonist of this story, has become afraid to leave the house of her best HS friend. This story follows her struggle to overcome her Agoraphobia to become free and unafraid. I believe that Woods handled the topic well with well developed characters and a wonderful story line!

I'm glad the author did a book focusing on the parents Mick & Megan but for me it dragged and dragged. We saw a peek of what I think the next book will be about Connor and Heather but I have to be honest I sooooo hope the story line for these two do not continue in the same way it was in this book. This book covered a lot of info about Connor and quite frankly I wasn't impressed. I really don't want to read more about his and Heather's stubbornness.

I have read all the books in this series and have enjoyed them very much. Sherryl Woods does a great job of developing her characters and by the end of her books, I often feel as satisfied as if I have eaten an exquisite meal. However, this book - completing the story of Megan and Mick - seemed rushed and way too predictable. I finished the book in record time, which led me to believe that it was shorter than the other books. Although I read the Kindle version (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Kindle, but that's a review for a different time) I checked the paperback edition which came in at 288 pages, I then checked the rest of the series which came in at 400 pages. Anyway, I do recommend this book if you have read the others, just don't set your expectations too high. If you haven't read any books in the series, start with the first one, The Inn At Eagle Point. You won't be disappointed.

The O'Briens of Chesapeake Shores are a very complex family. There is always something happening and siblings get mad at each other and then others try to smooth things out. This series could go on forever .. The family dynamics hold thereafter .. just wondering what else can happen to this family??

Woods really miss the boat on this. I could not feel the chemistry between the characters—Mick and Megan—who were previously married and created a family. I wanted so badly to love this book after reading The Inn at Eagle Point. But this didn't do it at all. The author has them kiss occasionally and wake up out of the same bed. Seriously? She could have done so much more from the chemistry and passion standpoint. It was a struggle to finish this novel, sorry to admit. She'd have done well to beef up the romance and add more of the Chesapeake maritime and nautical season during the holidays.

I chose this rating because of her ability to make each character come alive individually and yet pull them all together through an engaging story of family , and the complexities of how they relate to each other .I enjoyed the light romance that never overshadowed the direction of the storyline. It was a fun escape into the Chesapeake town, as your pulled into the lives of those who live there.

East Along the Equator: A Journey up the Congo and into Zaire (Traveler / Atlantic Monthly Press), by Helen Winternitz

From Publishers Weekly

One of the first of the publisher's travel series, this vivid account details a trip the author and her boyfriendboth journaliststook four years ago on the Congo (and eventually overland to the border of Uganda). Their route by river from the capital of Kinshasa to Kisangani followed the path of Conrad's Heart of Darkness and shows that, in a sense, little has changedthe earlier colonial brutality has been replaced by the corruption and exploitation of President Mobutu. Winternitz proved to be happily gregarious, mixing with Zaireans, learning the local language, passing on wonderful impressions and quotations to the readeras when she describes the universal excitement when a hippopotamus is caught and butchered. She also illustrates the shattered state of Zaire's economy (for example, the radio station in Kisangani, one of Zaire's largest cities, no longer broadcasts because scavengers kept stealing valuable wire and cablesavailable only on the black market if at alluntil the transmitting tower collapsed). The journey ends on an appropriately bitter note: Winternitz and her boyfriend are arrested by Zairean secret police and grilled on and off for more than a weekthus experiencing firsthand Mobutu's machinery of repression. Despite a tendency to overstate an already convincing case and sometimes sloppy language, Winternitz offers an eye-opening tour of Zaire. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The result is this appealing, wide-ranging blend of travel writing and political journalism. Everyday adventures and life are described and used as springboards to a broader exposition on the colonial past and desperate present of Zaire. ZAIRE is Africa as you imagine it: vast, dark, steamy, lush and mysteriously foreign, almost a composite of cliches. It is also an American client state, with a corrupt dictator who owes his job to the United States. ''East Along the Equator'' is about both of those Zaires, making it at once an intriguing and a troubling book - surely just what its author intends. Then a reporter for The Baltimore Sun, Helen Winternitz set out on her journey through Zaire in 1983 with two things clearly in mind. She loved Africa, having lived and traveled widely there, and had long been drawn as so many before her to this darkest, deepest part of it. She was also drawn, as she says at the outset, by ''the raw politics'' of the place. The details of the trip were not so clearly preconceived. Indeed, they couldn't have been, transportation and communication in Zaire being what they are. When Ms. Winternitz and her companion, Timothy Phelps, also a reporter at the time for The Sun, flew into Kinshasa they had one goal: to follow the Congo River (known in Zaire as the Zaire River) as far as possible into Central Africa. Little did they realize that their trip would end in the offices of Zaire's infamous security police. As it happens, their trip begins on a riverboat, a phenomenon unto itself in Zaire, and one Ms. Winternitz brings wonderfully alive: there are the traders who set up shop amid the vehicles and freight on the barges lashed to the boat; the villagers who fight the currents to tie their dugouts to its sides, filling their empty beer bottles and trading smoked monkeys, fish, hippopotamus; the smoky bars and Zairean music that fill the long, hot nights. And, day after day, there is the rolling mass of shiny mud-brown river and the throbbing of the boat's old engines against it.The boat deposits the travelers, days late of course, in Kisangani. There, the erratic schedule of a train that skirts upriver rapids thwarts their plans to continue along the river. At length they find a Land-Rover setting out on one of the undulating mudslides that passes for a road in Zaire's rainy season. Finally an assortment of rides takes the two through the Ituri forest, along the Ruwenzori Mountains and into the Great Rift Valley before they return by plane to Kinshasa. There they courageously seek out an opposition leader, Tshisekedi wa Mulumba, for an interview, only to be arrested immediately after visiting him. Finally, after eight days of detention and interrogation by Zaire's security police, the two head home for Baltimore. ''East Along the Equator'' is a travel book, then, but a most atypical one. It is surely no how-to book for the intrepid traveler. There are incomparable sights in Zaire, sights that these two skirt tantalizingly. They see the snowy 80-mile massif of the Ruwenzoris, Ptolemy's fabled Mountains of the Moon. But they never enter its wondrous environs, walk on its thick moss carpets of rust and ochre and forest green, see its giant fantastical plants or put their names in the climbing registry, a few pages after Lowell Thomas's. If ever an adventurer sought off-the-beaten-path travel, it is here.Ms. Winternitz's intentions are more serious than pure adventuring. Her travelogue is interwoven with commentary on Zaire's rich and troubled history and politics. Handled less skillfully, this could be intrusive. Here it gives meaning and depth to the journey. The Belgian Congo's sordid colonial past, the bloody days of independence and President Mobutu Sese Seko's C.I.A.-assisted ascent to power are all included, told clearly and compellingly. She also offers stark testimony to the injustice and corruption under which Zaireans bear up today. But her authorial purposefulness is, on occasion, perhaps too apparent. Far from letting Africa reveal itself in unexpected ways, ''East Along the Equator'' is almost relentlessly consistent. The division between the bad Government and the good people is clear and clean, the unhappiness with corruption remarkably articulate. Not that Ms. Winternitz has overstated the misery: it is endlessly appalling. But much of the Zairean reaction to it is sullen, much of it cynical. And much of the misery is mute. Zaire is a country where half of all babies die before the age of 2. People suffer horribly from treatable diseases: worms, malnutrition, malaria, measles. Somehow those human truths come through less prominently than do sophisticated denunciations of corruption and misgovernment.Yet perhaps these denunciations will reach American readers, which is surely Ms. Winternitz's fervent hope. Early in the book one of the Zaireans with whom she becomes acquainted denounces President Mobutu. ''The day will come when God will reach down and take Mobutu to his rest,'' he says. ''When that happens the people will rejoice and they also will remember that Mobutu was the Americans' man. The Americans were for Mobutu and Mobutu was for the Americans, but they forgot about the people. The Americans are inheriting Mobutu's unpopularity.''It's a chilling speech. Zaire is a huge and critical country, Africa's second largest, rich in resources, strategically situated - precisely the reasons that the United States holds Mr. Mobutu close in the face of his brutal rule and shameful self-enrichment. What are the costs of that policy?Ms. Winternitz's remarkably resourceful and courageous reporting shows the policy's impact on the Zairean people. Her personal experience with Zaire's lawlessness and utter contempt for human rights shows its inconsistency with both American principles and America's long-term goals. Her own answer, clearly, is that the costs are unacceptable. Readers of ''East Along the Equator'' will be hard-pressed to disagree.Excerpt: A DIRGE ON THE WATERPushing our way forward again, we saw that a board had been put down to the shore as a gangplank. Near the prow of the front barge, women of all sorts had gathered and were singing in Lingala, which is a mellifluous language that lends itself to the cadences of lament. They were singing dirges for a child. The story we heard was that the child was a sickly boy who had been too thin for too long. Prolonged malnutrition had killed him. The rest of the passengers had no contagion to fear, other than the general epidemic of penury that has settled everywhere in the country. . . .The singing women took the corpse and wrapped it in a blue cloth so that only the face showed up dark against the swaddling color. Some men found enough boards to nail together a simple coffin. Once this was accomplished, a stream of several hundred people balanced down the plank, bearing the body in the coffin, to the shore, on whose swampy edge water hyacinths bloomed in a tribute of purple. From ''East Along the Equator.''The TimesMachine archive viewer is a subscriber-only feature.Geneva Overholser is a member of the editorial board of The New York Times. She lived in Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire, from 1974 to 1976.

"East Along the Equator: A Journey Up the Congo and into Zaire" is an excellent account of a journey across Central Africa (in what was then Zaire) in the early 1980s. Winternitz and her companion traveled by river barge along the entire navigable portion of the Congo river, from Kinshasa to Kisangani. The Congo river barges are legendary among 'extreme' travelers. The end of Belgian colonization of the Congo meant the end of roads, making the river the only practical way to travel between Kinshasa and Kisangani. These river barges are (were?) floating villages, complete with markets and nightclubs populated by traders who make their livelihood onboard, as well as travelers going from place to place. From Kisangani the journey continues overland, to an eventual return to Kinshasa by air. In Kinshasa the pair are arrested and interrogated by the secret police after interviewing a politician opposed to president Moubutu. Winternitz gives an even-handed and interesting account of the journey, along with relevant history and background information. The book contains a good bibliography. This book was journalism when it was first published, and it is still worth reading today, as a document of the Congo under Moubutu.

Zaire isn't easy to get through, but the author certainly gave it her all making the trek. As a travel piece, I'd give it five stars. However, I'm deducting a couple of points for the politics. I disagree strongly with the author's conclusions/assessments. She and her partner shouldn't have been so surprised by their "arrest" just before leaving; while others were left to rot in jail, tortured, etc. they were able to feast at the embassador's residence under a sort of "house arrest" until Mobutu finally got sick of toying with them and gave their passports back.

An exquisitely written book.

The author's America-hating politics grate on the reader throughout and make her stories unbelievable. She does everything in her power to blame the United States for Africa's woes. Guess what, sweetie: Africa has been corrupt for a few years now and will continue to be so. Stop blaming America.

It has been many years since I read this book, but I was very glad to see it is still in print. It is entertaining and well-written, and gives insights into travel (and life)in Africa that I have not seen elsewhere.

I'm delighted to see this book available as I thought it was long out of print. This is among the most astounding adventure travels that I have ever read. Although it's been years since I read it, many of her experiences remain vivid in my memory.

Essential read if you want to plan a similar trip... like a guidebook. A lot of historical data.

Zoroastrianism: An Introduction (I.B.Tauris Introductions to Religion), by Jenny Rose

Review

""Jenny Rose's lively and engaging account comprises a very readable, well informed survey of Zoroastrianism and its history. The book is a pleasure to read throughout, and the author's writing style is markedly beautiful, placing her very much within Mary Boyce's literary tradition. Rose has read widely round the subject, engaging with important primary and secondary sources and rendering her thorough treatment of Zoroastrianism fully up-to-date. I particularly welcomed her valuable discussion of Zoroastrianism in Central Asia. All in all, the book is a fine example of considered synthesis and compression. This is a book one wants to read from beginning to end without putting it down. It will find a warm welcome from students of the subject and their teachers."" -- Almut Hintze, Zartoshty Reader in Zoroastrianism, SOAS, University of London ""It is a tall order to explain and summarize well such a polyglot scriptural and religious tradition as Zoroastrianism, with its 3000 years of history extending across so much of Asia and on into the global diaspora. But Jenny Rose's excellent and highly informative book is a most impressive response to the challenge. Rose adopts a refreshingly new approach that is both matter of fact in style and thoughtfully conceived, as well as being derived from the best new scholarly work of recent decades."" -- Alan Williams, Professor of Iranian Studies & Comparative Religion, University of Manchester

This Book was Way more than I hoped for. You see, years ago I must have read something about how Zoroastrianism brought on a virtual Moral Revolution in the West, comparable to Confucius’s Moral Influence in China. The difference being that Everybody knows about the influence of Confucius in Asia but that Zoroastrianism suffered badly in the Storms of History allowing Morally Derivative Religions to grow and thrive while Zoroastrianism was minimized and marginalized. Most serious Historians do not even Consider Zoroastrianism. The Focus is all on Egypt, Greece and Judaism.Well, fortunately Professor Jenny Rose came along with her scholarly Masterpiece. It can’t be long before she is a Full Tenured Professor somewhere, even Head of her own History Department. The Title of her Book is “An Introduction…”; however, this is in context to how the book was grouped with other books by her Publisher. The other books in the Series may have been introductions, but I largely doubt that anybody besides the most ambitious scholar would need anything in addition to Professor Rose’s Book. Now, yes, the book is SO complete that inevitably there will be sections that concern matters that you would not be the least bit curious about, but with a Real Physical Book, and not a Kindle Format, it is extremely easy to scan through until you find something again that pulls in your attention. But, concerning my vague assumption that Zoroastrianism brought a Moral Revolution in its wake, well, whatever I had read a few years, or a few dozen years, back was certainly true. The Religions that Most Historians and the General Public think were so pivotal to the Moral Development of the West were indeed only derivative, indeed, they were a bit reactionary and even backtracked a bit from the Moral Heights of Zoroastrianism. One can only suppose that if Alexander had stayed in Macedonia, or Conquered toward the West instead of toward the East, we’d all be living in a Beautifully Moral High Civilization now, instead of counting the days until our Environmental or Political Social Doom overtakes us.

Jenny Rose is a scholar that specializes in Iranian Studies (most prominently Ancient Iranian religion, history, and culture). This is one of the definitive books devoted to Zoroastrianism along with Mary Boyce's 'Zoroastrians: Their Religious Beliefs and Practices'. Despite its title, this book is much more than just a introduction. The book contains information not just on Zoroastrian practices and beliefs but also maps, a glossary, picture and illustrations, and a comprehensive history of Zoroastrianism in the myriad regions it thrived at. (a chapter devoted to Zoroastrianism in Central Asia, that is rare!). There is very few resources for the study of Zoroastrianism so this is a very invaluable book that successfully attempted to fill that void. Now a constructive caution, this is NOT a book meant for a general audience. This is a academic book published by a academic publisher by a scholar meant for other scholars and students. I'm a student of Iranian, Syriac, and Central Asian Studies so I can easily understand all the cities/places, geography, religions, events, languages, ethnic groups, peoples, and empires/civilizations mentioned. If you are a lay reader, you will struggle with reading this book. Another thing is about the religious readers. This in itself is not a problem but a few of these readers are merely interested because of the few similarities between Zoroastrianism and their own Abrahamic religion. So basically, they are only interested to make the fascinating religion that is Zoroastrianism (Mazdayasna) a mere compliment or curiosity to their biblical/monotheistic perspective instead of studying it for its own sake. If you are a scholar, student, or a learned reader then this book will not disappoint. If you are a lay reader, I recommend books by Peter Clark and Farhang Mehr as they are meant for Western lay readers.

Prof. Jenny Rose in her book does an overall exceptional job of detailing the long and complex history of one of the world's richest yet arguably most obscure belief systems. In essence, she manages to not only touch upon, but also definitively explore its many varied facets, over three hundred pages and nine chapters, each one dedicated to a specific aspect of the ancient faith. She starts off by going into its background, its rise to prominence in ancient Persia at the peak of its glory, then details its subsequent decline after the Arab conquest, and its diaspora communities found in India and North America today, complete with additional maps and dozens of photos.Strongly recommended for anyone interested in learning more about the Zoroastrian religion and its practices, no matter how little or how much you may already know about the topic!

The good news is that this book provides a wealth of information about Zoroastrianism--including its history and development. Unfortunately, I found the writing and style of the book to be rather dense and dull. In fact, the writing style somewhat distracted from the good information that the book contained, which actually wound up distracting me to the point that I had a hard time retaining the information that the book provided! Therefore, as a resource this book is really good. But, if you are looking to read a book that can educate you (and introduce you) to Zoroastrianism, I'd have to say look else. This book was just too dense to really get into or appreciate.

The book is written to be informative, not entertaining. It tells about Zoroastrainism and touches upon its evolution through history and through it's expansion from Persia to the Orient. Read this book if you want to understand the evolution of the religion and get a better understanding of what it is. This is not a book to tell you all about the religion and practices, although you will be able to infer some of it from the references.

Anyone who is interested in the origins of religion should consider reading this book.

Callie wanted a life away from Pittsburg where she could write the stories she always wanted to. After answering a mail order bride advertisement she found a life she couldn't leave even though it wasn't quite the one she invisioned.

A good story. A man out west had lost his wife and needed to find a wife, he placed an advertisement for a Bride. A woman in the east wanted to be a writer and had answered the advertisement for a Bride, not intending to marry until she arrived. A must read for those who enjoy historical western romance kindle books from Amazon at a special price and from a delightful author who keeps me entertained throughout the entire book before putting it down. Enjoyed this book.

This is another good story of a young woman leaving home of her parents to go to be a mail order bride. But she doesn't want to be married she wants to be a writer. Love this author's stories but wish they were longer and a sequel.

Once again you have a great story to read this Christmas season. There will be times for a good laugh too.
