This book so adorable and unique! I really enjoyed the Julia Child biography "My Life in France," and this book brings that story to life with such charming detail, illustrations, and joie de vivre! I am an adult, and bought this book for myself, but would recommend for children maybe 10 to 12 years old and up. The text is sophisticated, yet playful, and older children will have fun learning geography, recipes, new words in French, and, of course, about an inspiring and pioneering woman and chef. I just LOVED this incomparable and wonderful book- highly recommend!!!PS: The illustrations are so charming, I am purchasing a second copy to frame a few pages as 'prints!'

Love the topic, but this book is very difficult to read. While writing the review, I can't remember if the listing shows pictures of the inside of the book or not. If so - be sure to check those - to see if it is something up your alley. Otherwise, I can post some later if needed by anyone.

The actual story was very interesting. However, the writing style was AWFUL. My 3rd grader could not read it on her own. Half was in cursive & the other half wasn't (sometimes in the same word). It was VERY messy. The words were sometimes written from the left side of the page to the right but sometimes it was vertically. It was pretty much chaos and extremely frustrating for my daughter. I did learn some new stuff sbout Julia Child though. I probably would not recommend it.

What a charming little book this is. Not only am I amused by the naive illustrations and the print---I love the whole concept. Probably this is not a book for small children, but it is thoroughly accessible for an older kid, particularly if it is read and discussed with an interested adult (what a concept). Julia Child far outshines any of the personalities on the Food Network, and she would have been appalled at the plethora of timed cooking competitions that invade the TV waves nightly. She is in a class by herself, and Jessie Hartland's "Bon Appetit!' adds yet another star to the firmament. Buy the book. You'll love it.

Great book for kids to learn her real story in a simplified way with pictures. Hard to find any kid friendly book on Julia Child. Had a lot more too it than it first appears. Used this along with internet articles for my 2nd grader to learn about Julia for a school project. And I learned a thing or two as well.

I ordered this book for my ten year old daughter who wanted to do a school project on Julia Child. I was nervous that this one would be too simple for her, but I was so, so wrong. This is an absolutely beautiful book that helped peak my little girl's interest in an incredible woman. It is very informative, but the information is presented in such a creative and artistic manner that you're too busy having fun reading to realize how much you're learning. The art work is beautiful and the writing seamless. I would recommend this book to readers of all ages.

My 6 year old budding chef granddaughter loves this book.

My 9 year old had a really hard time reading the messy writing in this book. It is actually hard to follow for me as well!

All the stories in the Myth-O-Mania series are terrific. When I read them with my son I'm always reminded of the animated Hercules movie featuring James Woods as Hades. The stories are Hades' view of the famous Greek myths and "what REALLY happened".If they ever opted to make these into audio books for young people they really ought to get Mr. Woods to do the narrations; it would be a guaranteed hit!!

I liked the book and It was pretty cool, but time goes by so fast for Hades that it's really hard to keep track. It kept saying stuff like "I went back to the underworld, and then one day I decided to go back up too the war. Melendes was so old he had gray hairs on his head!" And apparently five years have passed.

This is such a funny, yet informational, spoof on the traditional myths. Read the whole series, starting with Have A Hot Time, Hades. My 5th grade students absolutely love these books and are very motivated to read!

This book contains stories that inspire; they make us understand what it is about the Catholic faith that draws people to God. In each of the stories there are reasons why the person does not believe or gave up believing in a 'supreme being' but that tends to 'eat at their inner being'; they then realize they are seeking something 'bigger than themselves'. The ways they find the Church vary but at the core of it is their search for truth and love which they discover in the Catholic Church. In a few of the cases they first start their search at churches of other faiths and are left still missing something, they do not know what but still have an emptiness and that is the power of the Eucharist and the constancy of the Catholic Church's faith tradition. Another interesting aspect of these stories is the importance of other Catholics they encounter on their way to the Catholic Church, even if not the most 'faithful' Catholics, they help draw them and lead them to the Church. My feeling was that in seeing these Catholics, who realize their own shortcomings, since through the humility and failings of these Catholics it helps them realize that the Church accepts all.

This book is a collection of interesting stories written to by a number of individuals who have converted from atheism to Catholocism/Christianity.Each story is well written, and each author tells about the events, relationships and considerations that lead to their conversion. The stories also gives insights into the lives of a number of individuals, and how they experienced life, relationships, and living in the American society during the last few decades.If you like autobiographies, you're gonna enjoy this book, as it is actually a collection of a number of "condensed" autobiographies.No matter what you believe in (as for me, I am actually a Protestant/Evangelical Christian, not a Catholic), this book will help you learn more about how other people come to believe what they believe, and it may challenge you to rethink some of your own beliefs.I've actually only read the first half of the book, but plan to complete reading in within the next few weeks.

This book is pretty good, but I was kind of disappointed. I was expecting more substance, and there wasn't much at all. I didn't really learn anything reading this book. It was pretty much just people's journey's to faith, of course, but generally there was not any depth, just simple and to the point. I was hoping for more.

The stories are all potentially interesting, but they're very short. Brevity can be a virtue, but in this case, it seemed like most of the authors were leaving out a lot for the sake of meeting a word limit.

when I read the stories at first ,I found a gap within each story , it's the same gap that I had when I started to believe in Jesus. you think something is missing , yet it's obvious that sometimes it's hard to express what drove you to believe by words. some of the conversion stories came after reasoning and deep study , others came as a gift from the almighty such as a religious experience . some of the people in the book were very anti-religion and anti-God , some of them even were evangelizing people with atheism and having their own blogs to do so. its amazing how God brought them to faith and work in their life .

The conversion stories in this book are heartfelt and inspirational. I have given copies of this book to several people and have received positive feedback from them. It is good not only for those without faith, and those contemplating joining the Catholic Church, but also for those active in the Catholic Church because it serves to reinforce their own faith.

About the Author

Dean Baker has more than 25 years of research experience in occupational and environmental epidemiology. The primary emphasis of his research has been on community-based epidemiological studies. During the past several years, he has focused on developmental toxicity and children's environmental health. He has conducted several epidemiological research studies examining chronic health effects of gestational and early childhood exposure to heavy metals and organochlorine chemicals. His other area of research has been on the health effects of psychosocial stressors in the workplace and in communities exposed to environmental hazards. In both of these areas, Dr. Baker has made contributions to the epidemiological study design and methods. He was elected 3 times as Secretary-Treasurer of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology, and was a founding member. He is an active teacher at the university, directing an occupational medicine residency program and supervising graduate students. Mark J Nieuwenhuijsen has been involved in various environmental exposure assessment, epidemiology, and health risk assessment studies in the Netherlands, the UK, Eastern Europe and the US. His interests include the health effects of chlorination by-products in water, traffic related air pollution and metals, specifically in relation to reproductive, respiratory, renal and cancer effects. He has published over a hundred papers. He graduated from Wageningen University, the Netherlands, and went to do a PhD at the National Heart and Lung Institute in London, UK. For his post doc he went to the University of California, Davis, USA after which he took up a faculty position at Imperial College London, UK. In January 2007 he joined the Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in Barcelona, Spain as a Research Professor. He is associate editor on the journals 'Occupational and Environmental Medicine' and the 'Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology'.

I'd been folowing for this book for a long time. It was a used one but when I opened it, it was something like new. However, it seems like a good quality copy to me. I really do not know, I'm not an expert, but it's not allowed to copy a full book in the US, right? Then it can't be a copy. Sorry I'm just a little bit confused. Maybe it's just very well used?The price was moderate, but shipping time was good.Thanks.

As a veterinarian, I was excited to read this book, but was left feeling like it missed the mark. There were so many aspects of the disease that were ignored: the paradigm shift that cats are a bigger concern than dogs, the various strains of the disease with their preferred hosts, the agonizing cases where beloved pets are euthanized premptively after exposure to wildlife, the baffling cases in livestock. Take it from someone who has sawn off more than a few heads in the fight against rabies.....there is so much more to the story!

I've been working my way through as many books on diseases as I can possibly manage. Part of it is sheer curiosity, and basically 'awe and respect' for bacteria and viruses that cause so many of our illnesses. I've been reading about this stuff since the 1990's when I was in school, and then med school. Bacteria and viruses have been here before we were, and may be here after we leave. And as anyone who teaches microbiology and pathophysiology will tell you, some of these viruses and bacteria can alter themselves to gain resistance. And we keep finding new ones to have to worry about like Zika.Having had past experience with a rabid raccoon who sat on my porch, and then threatened me when I went outside, I definitely wanted to read up on this particular 'monster'. I put this book Rabid on my 'wish' list probably two years ago. So I was thrilled to finally get it and read it. Even though this book was slow in areas where the authors went off on tangents that were remotely acquainted with the topic, the book did meet my own specifications for reading a book like this. It gave historical background, it discussed what the disease is, how it is caused, the background for the vaccine, interesting case studies that have occurred recently. For the most part, I thought the book was well-written.This is still probably one of the most frightening diseases on the planet...even with Ebola out there. Though we can vaccinate to prevent the disease and have a way to help someone who has been bitten if we get to them early enough, people still die from this agonizing disease even in the United States. I think one of the most important parts of this book was the fact that we still have no good treatments for people who were bitten and didn't know they were exposed to rabies, and so they went for treatment too late. Just this section alone should be read by everyone...then it would impress on people how important it is to get your animals vaccinated, and how important it is to avoid contact with wildlife that may harbor the rabies virus. I think of how many times I've seen children go up and touch a wild animal like a squirrel or chipmunk...and if people read this chapter on this lack of treatment, they wouldn't let their child near something that is wild. (Besides, it isn't safe for the animals either...)Good book...

I enjoyed the book but at times my frustration waxed as the author devoted an inordinate amount of space on the connections (or possible connections) between the disease caused by the rabies virus and the classic subjects of horror stories and films: vampires, werewolves and zombies. There were times when I came close to doing the unthinkable when I buy a book for leisure reading (as opposed to reference etc)- skip sections. At best 5 or 6 pages could have been devoted to the tangential connection between the rabies in popular culture and these denizens of horror literature. I just grew really tired of reading about zombies when I bought a book to read about rabies. The book is also very light on the fascinating biology of the virus itself and how it enters neurons, replicates and propagates. It seems kind of ridiculous that there can be tens of pages on zombies and vampires and essentially nothing on the molecular machinery of the virus and its transmission through an infected organism. I realize that this isn't a book on rabies virology but it is a subject which I expected to be covered in detail rather than in passing.

The premise of this book is interesting - that of the "World's Most Diabolical Virus." The execution fails in some regards.While establishing a great hook for an introduction, the book dribbles into old historical accounts of dog domestication and examples of rabies in early writings. This may appeal to armchair anthropologist, but was a bit dry and long-winded in my opinion. From there the medical history of rabies is discovered for roughly the last half. This accounting and that of the development for the rabies vaccine were the highlight of the book.The book suffered from some repetitiveness, especially in the anthropological interludes, and occasional discontinuity of thought that didn't seriously hinder the flow of the book.I'm glad I read it, and will likely loan it to a friend, but I will likely never read it again. My advice to anyone who gets the book is to skip over sections that are tedious to read and get to the interesting parts of the book. It will likely not hurt your comprehension of the book.

Before this book, I really had no idea about the impact that rabies can have on different societies. Wasik does an amazing job at pulling together all of the different tales and case studies around rabies and creating a cohesive narrative of the rabies virus that spans back to the Greeks. However, even through his temporal progression, he manages to provide enough space for suspenseful moments and important topics like Pasteur’s creation of the rabies vaccine. Through his presentation of the clinical case and the attempt for treatment, he reminded me of problem-solving physician mindset, and allowed me to glimpse into the great mind of Dr. Willoughby. This book definitely reminded me of all the reasons behind my pursuit of medicine – from the public health, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations that rabies virus can have.
