I had already read Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs --- a more detailed and comprehensive look at Jobs --- but this book covered many of the main themes and events in his life. It also briefly mentioned Jobs’ drug use, which came up much more frequently in Isaacson’s biography.If you are a fan of Steve Jobs, would like to learn more about this brilliant man or like the comic form, than this is the perfect book for you. Even if you don’t particularly like comics (like me), you might still enjoy this book (like I did); it’s short, has lots of illustrations and it covers ever major aspect of Jobs’ life.Reviewed by Christine M. Great book on Steve Jobs, but Need Color Version too to make the story more vivid'The book is black and white which is beautifully illustrated on Steve Jobs' life story in new angles, yet too dull in black and white colour. The author can think of launching a color version of the book, which will be a plus for such a great book!

Carolyn Warner has gained national stature as one of America′s most articulate educational and public policy leaders. A product of pioneering Oklahoma stock, her father was an Oklahoma State Senator, teacher, and newspaper publisher in whose honor the first public school in Oklahoma′s Indian Territory was named. Her mother, also a teacher, served as a school principal in both Oklahoma and California.With six children in the public schools, Carolyn Warner became an active parent volunteer and PTA member, and she began her public service career with election to the Phoenix Union High School District Board of Trustees. In 1974, following a business career as VP and general manager of a family-owned interior/business design firm, public service became a full-time commitment when she was elected Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the first non-educator ever elected to this post. She was reelected to two additional four-year terms. During her tenure, Warner became nationally known for her advocacy of educational accountability (both academic and fiscal); citizen participation in educational decision making; the integration of career and technical education and basic academic skills; and an unparalleled partnership with school administrators, teachers, and business leaders. Under her leadership, Arizona’s Basic Skills and Employability Skills initiatives became national models and were among the first educational materials to be printed in the Navajo language. In 1986, she was her party′s nominee for governor. Warner has received a number of Presidential appointments serving under both Republican and Democratic administrations, the White House Conference on Small Business, the National Skill Standards Board, the National Commission on the Public Service and the advisory panel in the financing of elementary and secondary education. As a respected public policy leader, Warner maintains an active role in political and educational initiatives and organizations on both the state and national scene. I'm not sure if this would be of use to you if you are in a public school -- I'm skeptical. However, if you are in an independent school like I am, it contains virtually nothing of value for you. I poured over it as soon as I got it, and I couldn't find a single good, new concept that applied to my situation in a private school.

Worth the read if you are an aspiring school administrator. Not complex and is dated since tech has come along way since 2009.

This book is more than a masterful collection of gorgeous textiles and fascinating stories, woven into a central theme. I gave it a friend, whose family escaped from Tashkent in the 1980s. Her parents had never told their children about their past. But in keeping with the textile tradition, her mother had brought silk ikats with her to New York, expecting to make a dowry for her daughter. All the fabrics remained in tissue paper, unused. Her mother gave me one of the pieces, five yards of heavy silk ikat in brilliant colors, woven in the warp-faced "atlas" technique. The family has gathered around the book again and again. Slowly the stories of their past are coming out. My friend can't wait for her children to get old enough to visit Tashkent. Before that, they're going to visit cousins in London who attend the Bukharan synagogue. This book is planting seeds. It's not only beautiful, it's meaningful.

The images and colors are very good and so is the variety of Uzbek and Turkman clothing and textiles.That said, I think the book caters for the novice, somewhat like a coffee table book and is not interestingenough for the antique textiles collectors and scholars.

Susan Meller has once again done an excellent job. This book expands on the information presented in her book on the Russian textiles produced to the Central Asian Trade. I recommend this book to both the enthusiast and the novice.

Best book in years on the fascinating and complex world of Central Asian textiles. Meller's thorough study of archival sources along with her deep understanding of textile production in the region combine to make this an important contribution to the field. Her selection of photographs, both modern and vintage are also well chosen. These especially are helpful in understanding the way the textiles were made and usedThe range of textiles illustrated, especially embroideries, is quite extensive. Anyone with an interest in collecting Central Asian textiles, whether in Central Asia or the west will find this book an essential guide to the vast array of examples available today.It was both a pleasure and an education to read. Highly recommended!

I just finished perusing this book which was recommended to me by a colleague in Berkeley, California. She knew I had a love of Central Asian textiles and the attendant symbolism. I found so many pieces that I have owned or currently own in my own collection explained and contextualized here in a way that is definitive and fascinating. Not only that, but Meller's inclusion of historical photographs transported me to another era and life where these colorful patterns held profound significance and meaning in the subjects' everyday lives. This tome is beautiful, and I heartily endorse it to anyone. I am also thankful to my friend (who sold it to me) for suggesting it!

Silk and Cotton is a stunningly beautiful masterpiece about everyday textiles from the former Silk Road. This narrative tells a story of a faraway place and time using hundreds of archival photographs, maps, postcards, paintings and everyday textiles to illustrate her point. About the Author

Steve Cox was born in Oakland, California in 1949. He grew up and received his education in Fort Smith, Arkansas and served in the Arkansas Air National Guard from 1967 to 1973. He is a founding member and officer of the Southwest American Historical Artifact Research Association (SAHARA), a private research organization in operation since 1974. Steve founded and operated Napo Basin Mining Company, a placer gold mining operation in the Amazon Jungle of Ecuador, from 1979 to 1984. Steve and his wife Ginger were married in Quito, Ecuador in 1981 and spent their honeymoon on the Rio Napo in the Amazon Jungle. He has discovered and recorded many historic sites lost to time. Among these are two sites now on the National Historic Register, a 1830s frontier fort lost for over 70 years, and two Civil War battlefields, one of which is now a public battlefield park. Other discoveries include lost military camps, Civil War skirmishes, and archeological sites too numerous to mention. Steve has worked with universities, museums, national parks and research organizations for over 50 years, and has extensive experience in mapping, art and illustration, and artifact identification and restoration. He has owned several residential and commercial design businesses since 1967, and now operates Steve Cox Designs, Inc.
