This book makes me wish I had become a vet.In "Tell Me Where It Hurts" Dr. Nick Trout explores the ups and downs of the life of a top tier veterinary surgeon. He compresses a lifetime of poignant, frequently funny, and sometimes heart rending experiences into a single exhausting day. I had thought about being a vet when I was young, and this book is closer than any other I have read to summarizing what the journey to skilled professional veterinarian is really like.The book opens and closes with the story of "Sage", a German Shepard with a potentially life threatening stomach disorder. It is the perfect case to explain the uncertainties of the world of veterinary medicine, and ultimately serves to explain the trials and joys of the job. Along the way there are many detours, including sections on methods of veterinary training in different countries, the emotional tolls of the job, the changing demographics of the profession, and the increase in exotic animals in common practice. I was especially amused by the diversion into the world of "ferret legging" on p. 201. "Ferret legging is a centuries-old English sport in which the contestant stuffs a pair of ill-tempered ferrets down his pants." Several restrictions apply, including a total ban on undergarments of any sort. The winner is the person who can keep the ferrets in their pants the longest. The current record holder is a 72 year old Welsh coal miner named Reg Mellor who has kept two ferrets in his pants for the unbelievable time of five hours and twenty-six minutes. Humorous diversions such as this break the tension of the life-or-death decisions that the majority of the book deals with, and are a welcome relief after some of the more nail-biting sections.My only critique of the book would be the rather enormous over-weighting of canine cases in the book, although I don't know if that is representative of Dr. Trout's practice, or if he simply prefers dogs to cats. Any animal lover should love and appreciate this book in its entirety, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I liked this book. I didn't love it.The author (and reviewers) continually invokes the name and justified fame of James Herriott, so I dared hope for a similar style: Herriott's books are almost wholly story, with a bit of reflection, whereas this seemed to have reverse proportions. I got tired of, and honestly bored with, all the ruminating, moralizing, defense of his profession, and desperate protestations of affection for various animals and people. I'd have preferred for Dr. Trout to primarily let the tales themselves convey these things. In 25 years of practice, one would've thought there'd be enough memorable pets to fill these 285 pages with the humor and pathos I did see shining in the recollections salted in amongst the ponderings.

The pet stories are nice and some of the descriptions of procedures and diagnoses are interesting, but often the author suddenly change the subject and veers off in another direction, usually a lengthy complaint or some verbose, uninteresting statement about the current issues in veterinary medicine, which I found to be pretty boring. I ended up skipping over pages and pages of these missives in my effort to, as one reviewer aptly put it, "get back to the dog!" Dr. Trout should have simply stuck with the stories about the few pets mentioned in this book, instead of wasting the reader's time with lengthy diatribes. Then the book would have contained only about 50 pages instead of 306, making it a good "rainy day" read.

I really liked Tell Me Where It Hurts by Dr. Nick Trout. I love books about dogs and this book did not disappoint. It touched the heart, but there was nothing that made me overly sad - it was mainly happy endings. The author did a great job of intertwining his daily life as an animal surgeon with interesting facts and information about animals, veterinarians, and other experiences.I would highly recommend this book to readers who like stories about: animals, memoirs, veterinarians and especially dogs.

I guess I was hoping for a modern day James Herriot tale: a simple story with honesty, warmth, and humor. I had a hard time staying focused on this book, and found myself frequently skimming through pages. There were endless extended similes which quickly became irritating. I had to skip over paragraphs at a time just to see what happened next. Also, the author chose to present numerous cases as though he'd treated them all in one day. As a result, every time he checked on another patient he'd operated on early in the day, I had forgotten the details of that animal's case. It was even hard to keep track of the other doctors, interns, etc.-- too many characters briefly brought in, then reappearing much later.

As with many other pet owners, my pets, in my case - 4 hefty dogs - are my babies, and I have my vet on speed dial. The author, a veterinarian surgeon, does not pull any punches in his discussion of the health of his patients and the delicate art of dealing with the owners. The author makes several comparisons to fellow British veterinarian and author James Herriot of the famed "All Creatures Great and Small" series discussing the very same issues 80+ years ago. Treatments may have vastly changed, but not the animals various ailments or the attitudes of the owners. In this book, Dr. Trout receives an emergency phone call at 3 am to perform emergency surgery on a gravely ill dog. The book tells the action pretty much hour by hour for his work day that lasts almost 24 hours of constant action. The story comes to a well defined closing with the very same dog that it started with. Written with warm, humor and a vocabulary easy to understand, it is great for all ages of animal lovers or of those who don't know the difference between a domestic or feral cat. Well worth the cost and time

This series has been sitting on my "shelves" for over a year since they were recommended multiple times and noted as a highly anticipated upcoming release by an online book group. With the recent release of the fourth book in the series, I decided to finally dive into the Hell or High Water universe.Catch a Ghost is a romantic suspense that follows privately contracted mercenaries Prophet and Tom as they adjust to their new partnership, work a case that's a little too close to home, and explore their intense physical chemistry. I liked both characters and found their closely held secrets intriguing. Though we learn some of those secrets in Catch a Ghost, I imagine there's plenty more to come over the course of the series. The action scenes were fast-paced and held my attention and the case offered up twists, making this one that was hard to step away from. Add to that the incredibly sexy scenes between Prophet and Tom and some good banter, and I consider myself hooked.

The Hell or High Water series has been compared to the Cut & Run series and I can definitely appreciate the comparison. Prophet and Tommy are like grittier, darker, more damaged and more messed up versions of Ty and Zane. They are somewhat outside the law working for a private mercenary company – although between the two of them they have past military, FBI and CIA experience. In to Catch a Ghost Tommy is just starting out with Extreme Escapes, the private mercenaries for hire company; and meets his very reluctant “I don’t do partners” partner Prophet. The case they are assigned eventually morphs into demons from Prophet’s past coming back to tweak his PTSD into high gear. The plot is decent with enough action and intrigue to keep me interested; but of course I’m not actually in it for the plot – it’s the relationship building that captures my interest.And of course along the way Prophet and T. hook up and of course it’s just all about the sex, absolutely no feelings engaged. Riiight. Both main characters are incredibly damaged (did I say that already because it bears repeating) both have traumatic pasts that continually intrude into their present lives – and yet they work perfectly together. Either that or I just find traumatized, alpha males having intense gay sex – really hot. Which yeah – I definitely do.Tommy is pierced and tatted with a serious anger management problem. Prophet is a hyper, loner, rule breaker with out of this world flashbacks. They have great chemistry. I love their banter, their intense attraction and the developing relationship between two clearly relationship phobic men.Since To Catch A Ghost is part of a series it’s not a spoiler to indicate that at the end of the story not much is resolved and Prophet and Tommy’s budding relationship has gone to @#$%.Mick and Blue get the occasional mention – so I’m glad I started with Free Falling first – I hate obvious references to people and/or events I know nothing about.

I originally read this book in the beginning of 2014. I'd say it's been a while ;) But now was the right time to re-read (or rather - re-listen) as Jakes has FINALLY released the 4th and last installment in the series. I'm re-writing my review since I found it to be too all over the place.I'll start by saying I really enjoyed this one. It's fast paced and though the relationship buildup can be "tedious" at times I mostly blame myself.. I'm used to stand alone books, at least where relationship are concerned, but this one is more realistic because these two hardened men, who have LOADS of secrets and issues, NEED their time before an emotional relationship can form. I actually really appreciated that because it was more believable seeing them act upon their attraction but MUCH more hesitant to show ANY kind of emotion and care toward one another.Prophet Drews has worked for EE Enterprise - a private security and operations company - almost from it's beginning. Though he seemed to have a lot of misgivings with the big boss - Phil Butler - in the end, he knows Phil is grooming him to replace him once he is off the field and THAT will happen sometime soon though WHEN exactly they don't know. Prophet has known for a while now he has a medical condition which in the end render him blind. That's a HUGE secret Prophet keeps from most of everyone around him. But that's not his only secret.. His past, mostly losing his best friend since childhood - John Morse - while serving as Navy SEALs together changed him. He is determined even years later to find out what TRULY happened to him.Tom Boudreaux is new at EE. Lucky or unlucky for him, Phil was planning on partnering him with Prophet who seems to be unable to keep a partner. Well, it wasn't much easier for Tom. While Prophet simply doesn't get "attached", Tom's ex-partners were ALL killed. bad luck they say. Bad luck.They are both quite reluctant to working together but their first case throws them into the water if they like it or not and this case is VERY personal for Prophet. John's younger brother Christopher gets killed in what seems to be a wrestling fight. Trying to find the one to blame for the murder is much more difficult than they anticipated but generally through bitching and complaining about one another, being unable to fully trust each other they still seems to work well together. But mostly injury prevents them from finding more than the basics about the case.Regrouping after getting well takes them even further from the case, since it's not really a "case" for EE anymore. But the person who got Christopher killed hasn't said the last word and so he takes someone else Prophet cares about and this time they are WAY over their heads. This is when the past truly comes knocking on Prophet's door and Tom unable to look away follows him to (almost) a certain death.While this book doesn't end with a cliff hanger or anything like it, it's a very unstable place for Prophet and Tom. Too many things were said and even more were UNSAID between them. Tom has made many attempts to get closer to Prophet who in turn keeps pushing him away and Tom is sick and tired of it. Prophet from his side KNOWS he is pushing Tom for the wrong reasons but it's much easier for him to keep flirting with his Spook friend next door - Cillian - than accepting Tom's attempts and actually ACTING upon his feelings. But it's so difficult especially after all the stuff from his past floating around him, now more than ever.Originally I gave this book 4 stars review for a very specific reason and I still stand behind it. This series is TOO similar to "Cut & Run" by Abigail Roux. While I enjoyed this series, I can't ignore the HUGE resemblance between Ty to Prophet and Zane to Tom. They have similar traits and mannerisms and also there are some sub-plots or issues from both characters' past which are strangely similar. There is no way I would read any more of the books in this series. It was too boring, too long, too cryptic throughout the entire book. Hard to understand, flashbacks that took me too long to realize that's what I was reading, and the way he kept talking to "ghosts" was just too much.There are a lot of books I like or dislike that I don't take the time to write a review for, but there was no way I could pass up the opportunity to let everyone know how how pi**ed of I was at the ending of this book. I'm sure the answers to all my MANY questions would be answered in the books to come but there are so many left in this series and this one was so cryptic and confusing that there is no guarantee I'll get answers or understand them when they come.

I have been hearing of essential oils for several years, but didn’t really understand what all the excitement was about. Then I got ahold of Essential Oils for Beginners, which really helped me to understand what an essential oil is, what it’s good for, and how to use it. The book is very easy to read and understand for a newbie like me, yet it doesn’t “talk down” to the reader. Anyone, from a beginner like me, to someone who regularly uses essential oils can benefit from all the information in this book. It tells all about the various oils, what plants they come from, how to apply the oils, and what ailments or other issues they are good for. It also tells you how not to use the oils, and how to use them carefully for the desired results. There are also around fifty recipes for blending oils for various uses that will be very helpful. The section detailing each plant, what part is used for oil extraction, and photos of each plant was of particular interest to me as a beginner. The book is clean, well laid out, and usefully organized. If you’re interested in essential oils, you should get this book.

I was happy to see that Mary Jones has written another book on essential oils. I had read her book, “Essential Oils for Dogs,” and found it to be informative, well-written and well-organized. Her “Essential Oils for Beginners: The Where To & How To Guide For Essential Oil Beginners” has all those same attributes, but it is written with humans as its focus, and it goes into more detail that pertains just to humans.The format of this beginners’ book makes for a very quick read – from the general introductory material about essential oils, their history and how and why they work, to the more detailed chapters on the top 15 essential oils you can use in aromatherapy and the top 30 all-around essential oils, to the very helpful glossary of essential oil terms that comes toward the end of the book.I also found very helpful the book’s links to several videos. Sometimes it’s good just to listen to someone talk and watch a demonstration so you don’t wear your eyes out from reading text.Last weekend, I attended a baby shower for a friend who is about to have her first baby. She is quite nervous, but thanks to the chapter entitled “50 Little Known Essential Oil Recipes,” I now know what I am going to give her as a post-baby shower gift. I am going to make up a diffusing blend of lavender, frankincense, ylang ylang, and Roman chamomile to ease her labor pains. From what I read in the chapter on aromatherapy, diffusing that scent in my friend’s hospital room may have the added effect of protecting her from those airborne infections so prevalent in hospital settings.I have been having a bit of a problem lately with my memory, so when I saw in one of the introductory chapters that essential oils may be used to help with memory loss, I put in a search for “memory” so I could find out more. What I discovered is that rosemary is the essential oil to use for memory loss. Not only that, but it also helps to soothe aching, cramping muscles. So, I’m adding rosemary oil to my list.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to safely and inexpensively use essential oils to, among other things, ease pain, enhance brain performance, protect the heart, and prevent infection.

I'd whip up the weight loss blend if I had the ingredients right now. And the most common mistakes are also mentioned.The book ends with a very useful glossary and FAQ section.I recommend you read this book if, like me, you've only just begun showing an interest in essential oils. This turned out to be much more interesting than I expected. It contrasts markedly, for example, with the book by von Below, which reads like an objective textbook. This book is written by a recognizable human being, as hard as that can be to square with the circumstances. The details really set the scene, and can be strange, like one of Hitler's monologues on evolution she describes, or witnessing Eva Braun smoking outside the bunker (a big no-no as far as Hitler was concerned).A genuinely interesting book. True, like most of these memoirs, the author gives no hint of knowing about the worst activities of the regime. I don't know what to say about that, but she herself said something interesting, many years later, in an interview which you might be able to find online. She's talking here about one of the college students in the White Rose opposition to Hitler:"One day, I walked past a plaque on the Franz-Joseph Straße (in Munich), on the wall in memory of Sophie Scholl. I could see that she had been born the same year as I, and that she had been executed the same year I entered into Hitler’s service. And, at that moment, I really realised that it was no excuse that I had been so young. I could perhaps have tried to find out about things."

She also wasn’t tempted or compromised by working with hundreds of young & not so young soldiers.From around December 1942 to April 1945, about 2 1/2years, Traudl Humps Junge worked for Hitler & saw him/interacted with him just about daily. The Hitler she “knew” was not the raving mad man we have been led to believe he was. He had an almost unwavering unassailable certainty in the infallibility of his own prejudices, theories, and abilities. He could be kind to people close to him even while he could be merciless to others.

She saw Hitler as a good boss, a nice man witha sensitive stomach. Because of his high pressure job and theirisolated surroundings he needed to socialize in the evenings with hissubordinates and co-workers to unwind. His tastes were rather primand he expected his women secretaries to behave and dress withtotal decorum. He treated them with respect and care. His onlyconcession was to Eva Braun who is regarded as something of aclothes horse and flashier dresser than they were allowed to be. Eva'sexplanation was that she was trying to keep his spirits up. This girlwho saw Hitler's chiefs coming and going on a daily basis and wasclose by during the assassination attempt writes her memoirs laterin life with the gained knowledge of the horrors of the Holocaust, etc.

I'm giving this book five stars because I have discovered quite a lot from reading it. I absolutely despise the National Socialist Party for their role in bringing about Hitler's sickening 'Final Solution'. I just find it interesting the way the Party members continued to follow such an obvious criminal regime, without thinking for themselves. Then to witness their beloved leader to go out like a coward. What a slap in the face that must have been. Anyone interested in history and especially WWII will find this book to be very enlightening and informative.
