It is a good book, there are a lot of idioms, but quite a few are missing (e.g. 'at the top of the game'). When I search for a specific phrase, I prefer using online Urban Dictionary, but as a non-native speaker, I often refer to the book just to learn a couple of more new idioms.The delivery of the book was quick but the cover was a little bit crumpled.

The book arrived in excellent condition. Highly recommended.

I was very excited to read this book and see how the author would lead us down the road of a man falling in love with his best friend's daughter.The actual love story takes a long time to get to, so I was personally torn. I mean - it make sense. We needed a build up and a back story to get us to understand their innocent bond. It isn't like Kenzi always was a attracted to Tor.But then it felt rushed. It felt the build up was so long and then it was bam, bam and boom and then over.I enjoyed the story so much I just wanted more I guess. I am selfish that way :)Asher's story was also much more tensed. We are vaguely given whatever happened to Ember and we get a little teeny taste in the epilogue.I also kept calling Tor (short for Toran) Thor in my head, lol

4 starsI’m a big man, muscled with long hair and tattoos. I love pets and beat bad guys abusing dogs I rescue. Handy I can repair your ride. I love babysitting and took care of my niece from her birth till teenagehood. If you can’t sleep I could serenade you as I was in a rock band. Responsible and selfless I gave up my dream to take care of my family once my dad died.I’m lonely and looking for my last relationship as I’m tired of meaningless sex. I want someone to love me for me and help me rescue abused animals.OK, that’s not in the book but in a nutshell, this is Tor. What would you do if you read such add in your local newspaper? Answer right away and catch the guy , right? Right? Tor is best book boyfriend material. I still love Lukas to death, he is my favorite of Carian’s heroes but Tor really was a close one.What I loved in this book:-The main characters.I won’t say more about Tor because I could go on and on but he was not the only loveable main character. Kenzi was a sweet girl, very easy to like. She is young, younger than Tor by fifteen years but she knows what she wants. Like Lukas in Ashes and Embers series, she’s wise beyond her age. She’s always been surrounded by adults. From a very young age she went on tour with her famous parents seeing some drunks or drugged people. Now she only wants to settle down, have a family to care for, a house and some pets. She does not dream of fame or travelling or living the classic college girl’s life.-The childhood memories.Each chapter begins with some memory retelling, be it from Tor or Kenzi’s point of view and they were super cute! I melted on the spot so many times… Let me give you a taste: Kenzi is five years old and Tor is twenty. He’s just lost his dad and is in Asher’s house, so sad. ”Come on Kenzi, it’s time for bed. Uncle Tor needs some time alone” “No…” She climbs onto my laps and hugs me. “He can’t be alone, mommy.” … “Uncle Tor?” she whispers when her parents are gone? “Yeah?” “Your Daddy went to Heaven?” I take a deep breath. “That’s right, Angel. He did.” She hugs me tighter. “Don’t be sad. We can share my Dadd.” Awwww, cuteness overload!-The connection between Tor and Kenzi.She was the center of his world from the first instant, he did so many sweet things to make her happy. He dried her tears, he gave her a bunny, rescued her from prom night gone bad,… He was her hero, he was her “uncle” without blood ties, her friend and later…-The taboo.They want to be together but Tor fought his feelings so hard! He wanted to be the noble man, not the one who “betrayed” his best friend. ”If we care about each other, love each other and want each other…is that wrong? And if it is, then why? Because of our ages? Because he is my dad’s best friend? Because he’s taken care of me? Do thos things make it wrong …or do they actually make it more right? Why is it acceptable to get involved with a total stranger, who could do any number of things to hurt you or betray you, but not get involved with someone who has cared about you since the day you were born?”My only complaint? The middle of the book felt “slower”. In the beginning of the story Tor and Kenzi realize their feelings are changing. From then on both battle with what they should do and what they want to do. Then, it slows down and I found it lightly repetitive in some ways but that’s just to gain momentum in the last part of the book and end on a perfect epilogue.Carian Cole remains one of my “to go to” authors when I’m in the mood for beautiful romance stories filled with amazing guys, loveable heroines, adorable pets and the right amount of angst.

Well-written story, colorful characters, interesting romantic conflict.But holy heck, if you're a parent, especially of girls, you may want to pass on this one. Or if you're a teacher, or a grandparent, or a counselor, or CASA volunteer ... yeah. The hero falls in love with a girl he's known since her birth. He's a second father to her, except that as she grows to 17, they fall in love and lust.You know, that could happen. The major problem is just when I thought okay, I can do this, the story would flash back to him comforting her as a toddler or changing her diaper, or holding her in his arms as a small child. And then the 'ICK' factor would hit, and hit hard!Just too much verging on pedophilia/child abuse/call it what you want. Creeped me out.

Oh my heavens mercy!!! This book completely destroyed me in such a good way!!! It exceeded all my exceptions!!! I am so mad at myself for taking so freakin long to read it being that I’ve had it for a while. Oh my lord I cannot stop thinking about it!!! I want to re-read it already and I am one of those people that simply can’t reread a book no matter how good it is. But when it comes to this book I am fairly certain that I will be doing just that!!! This book is so enchanting!!! It was as if I was under a spell!!! I could not get enough of it!!! I basically read nonstop until there was nothing left to read!!!I looove Tor and Keniz's story!!! I find it to be totally and utterly amazing!!! And completely realistic. I don’t find it gross or unethical as some may. I can’t stand that somewhere in history someone decided who we can be with and who we can’t. No one has the right to tell us who we can and cannot love. In my opinion you simply can’t help who you love. As it is so often said the heart wants what it wants. And further more whose business is it anyway??? Nobody’s except the people involved in the relationship. Anyway Tor and Keniz’s relationship is one in the making. Slowly growing from the day Kenzi was born and feelings involved change based on Keniz’s age. There is no inappropriateness of any kind. They have a bond that is strong and by the time Kenzi is old enough their bond has grown to epic proportions. Their desires grow slowly but as where Tor struggles with his feelings Kenzi embraces them. In fact she was the one that relentlessly pursued him!!! It’s not that Tor doesn’t want it it’s just the circumstances that surround them he struggles with. But thankfully he finally embraces it and they end up having a relationship that most can only dream about.“she’s kidnapping me into her world, and I’m slowly surrendering, a willing hostage”Yes Kenzi may be fifteen years younger that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know what she wants and that her feeling aren’t real. They simply complete each other.“Young love first love is so innocent. So pure and trusting. So all encompassing. I shouldn't be on the receiving end of that love from her at my age but no honesty she's my first love to.”I love how the day played out when they went on a ride and spent all day together. The setting made me feel as if I was on the sidelines watching and about to feel the feelings surrounding them. I think it was perfectly fitting that its that day when they take their relationship to the most intimate level. The feelings were real and so raw that they were palpable. The love they share is earth shattering.“I want crazy f****** love. I want someone that’ll never let me go. I want to wake up to my best friend every day”This book is Kenzi and Tor's journey about how they become who they are and what an phenomenal journey it is!!! Daniel Bessner reveals how the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the growth of Nazi thought affected Hans Speier’s work as an American policymaker. Bessner chronicles Speier’s ideological origins that lead to an expert-driven approach to US foreign relations. This book would appeal to anyone with interest in US Cold War history as well as foreign policy. It is readable as well as informative.

An incredible read. Having first read Speier's marvelous "The Truth in Hell" in high school, I've been fascinated with Speier's story since I was a young, yet have always found most reading material on the subject to be lacking. Bessner's salient and long-overdue examination of Speier's work (and its relevance in today's geopolitical, neoliberal climate) is a refreshing light in a sea of academic darkness. Cannot recommend highly enough!

In his eloquently written and superbly researched biography of Hans Speier, Dr. Bessner traces the history of defense intellectuals in American foreign policy back to a pioneering figure much less well-known than Kissinger, Brzezinski or Wolfowitz. Highly recommended.

This book is an excellent examination of the origins of “defense intellectuals” and the ways in which they have shaped U.S. foreign policy from the 1940s until today.

A great read and very relevant to our current climate.

Bessner's book is a really interesting look into the origins of modern policy making. He does an especially fine job of connecting events across the 20th century regarding how propaganda campaigns are used to support policy making decisions. While focused on the results of these World War II era inventions on the Cold War the book gives great insights into the ways several modern administrations have likely achieved their agenda goals as well. A great and enlightening read for anyone interested in modern American politics.

Well-written, engaging and thoroughly researched. An insightful perspective on a highly-relevant topic through a unique lens.

This book makes me wish I had become a vet.In "Tell Me Where It Hurts" Dr. Nick Trout explores the ups and downs of the life of a top tier veterinary surgeon. He compresses a lifetime of poignant, frequently funny, and sometimes heart rending experiences into a single exhausting day. I had thought about being a vet when I was young, and this book is closer than any other I have read to summarizing what the journey to skilled professional veterinarian is really like.The book opens and closes with the story of "Sage", a German Shepard with a potentially life threatening stomach disorder. It is the perfect case to explain the uncertainties of the world of veterinary medicine, and ultimately serves to explain the trials and joys of the job. Along the way there are many detours, including sections on methods of veterinary training in different countries, the emotional tolls of the job, the changing demographics of the profession, and the increase in exotic animals in common practice. I was especially amused by the diversion into the world of "ferret legging" on p. 201. "Ferret legging is a centuries-old English sport in which the contestant stuffs a pair of ill-tempered ferrets down his pants." Several restrictions apply, including a total ban on undergarments of any sort. The winner is the person who can keep the ferrets in their pants the longest. The current record holder is a 72 year old Welsh coal miner named Reg Mellor who has kept two ferrets in his pants for the unbelievable time of five hours and twenty-six minutes. Humorous diversions such as this break the tension of the life-or-death decisions that the majority of the book deals with, and are a welcome relief after some of the more nail-biting sections.My only critique of the book would be the rather enormous over-weighting of canine cases in the book, although I don't know if that is representative of Dr. Trout's practice, or if he simply prefers dogs to cats. Any animal lover should love and appreciate this book in its entirety, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I liked this book. I didn't love it.The author (and reviewers) continually invokes the name and justified fame of James Herriott, so I dared hope for a similar style: Herriott's books are almost wholly story, with a bit of reflection, whereas this seemed to have reverse proportions. I got tired of, and honestly bored with, all the ruminating, moralizing, defense of his profession, and desperate protestations of affection for various animals and people. I'd have preferred for Dr. Trout to primarily let the tales themselves convey these things. In 25 years of practice, one would've thought there'd be enough memorable pets to fill these 285 pages with the humor and pathos I did see shining in the recollections salted in amongst the ponderings.

The pet stories are nice and some of the descriptions of procedures and diagnoses are interesting, but often the author suddenly change the subject and veers off in another direction, usually a lengthy complaint or some verbose, uninteresting statement about the current issues in veterinary medicine, which I found to be pretty boring. I ended up skipping over pages and pages of these missives in my effort to, as one reviewer aptly put it, "get back to the dog!" Dr. Trout should have simply stuck with the stories about the few pets mentioned in this book, instead of wasting the reader's time with lengthy diatribes. Then the book would have contained only about 50 pages instead of 306, making it a good "rainy day" read.

I really liked Tell Me Where It Hurts by Dr. Nick Trout. I love books about dogs and this book did not disappoint. It touched the heart, but there was nothing that made me overly sad - it was mainly happy endings. The author did a great job of intertwining his daily life as an animal surgeon with interesting facts and information about animals, veterinarians, and other experiences.I would highly recommend this book to readers who like stories about: animals, memoirs, veterinarians and especially dogs.

I guess I was hoping for a modern day James Herriot tale: a simple story with honesty, warmth, and humor. I had a hard time staying focused on this book, and found myself frequently skimming through pages. There were endless extended similes which quickly became irritating. I had to skip over paragraphs at a time just to see what happened next. Also, the author chose to present numerous cases as though he'd treated them all in one day. As a result, every time he checked on another patient he'd operated on early in the day, I had forgotten the details of that animal's case. It was even hard to keep track of the other doctors, interns, etc.-- too many characters briefly brought in, then reappearing much later.

As with many other pet owners, my pets, in my case - 4 hefty dogs - are my babies, and I have my vet on speed dial. The author, a veterinarian surgeon, does not pull any punches in his discussion of the health of his patients and the delicate art of dealing with the owners. The author makes several comparisons to fellow British veterinarian and author James Herriot of the famed "All Creatures Great and Small" series discussing the very same issues 80+ years ago. Treatments may have vastly changed, but not the animals various ailments or the attitudes of the owners. In this book, Dr. Trout receives an emergency phone call at 3 am to perform emergency surgery on a gravely ill dog. The book tells the action pretty much hour by hour for his work day that lasts almost 24 hours of constant action. The story comes to a well defined closing with the very same dog that it started with. Written with warm, humor and a vocabulary easy to understand, it is great for all ages of animal lovers or of those who don't know the difference between a domestic or feral cat. Well worth the cost and time

This series has been sitting on my "shelves" for over a year since they were recommended multiple times and noted as a highly anticipated upcoming release by an online book group. With the recent release of the fourth book in the series, I decided to finally dive into the Hell or High Water universe.Catch a Ghost is a romantic suspense that follows privately contracted mercenaries Prophet and Tom as they adjust to their new partnership, work a case that's a little too close to home, and explore their intense physical chemistry. I liked both characters and found their closely held secrets intriguing. Though we learn some of those secrets in Catch a Ghost, I imagine there's plenty more to come over the course of the series. The action scenes were fast-paced and held my attention and the case offered up twists, making this one that was hard to step away from. Add to that the incredibly sexy scenes between Prophet and Tom and some good banter, and I consider myself hooked.

The Hell or High Water series has been compared to the Cut & Run series and I can definitely appreciate the comparison. Prophet and Tommy are like grittier, darker, more damaged and more messed up versions of Ty and Zane. They are somewhat outside the law working for a private mercenary company – although between the two of them they have past military, FBI and CIA experience. In to Catch a Ghost Tommy is just starting out with Extreme Escapes, the private mercenaries for hire company; and meets his very reluctant “I don’t do partners” partner Prophet. The case they are assigned eventually morphs into demons from Prophet’s past coming back to tweak his PTSD into high gear. The plot is decent with enough action and intrigue to keep me interested; but of course I’m not actually in it for the plot – it’s the relationship building that captures my interest.And of course along the way Prophet and T. hook up and of course it’s just all about the sex, absolutely no feelings engaged. Riiight. Both main characters are incredibly damaged (did I say that already because it bears repeating) both have traumatic pasts that continually intrude into their present lives – and yet they work perfectly together. Either that or I just find traumatized, alpha males having intense gay sex – really hot. Which yeah – I definitely do.Tommy is pierced and tatted with a serious anger management problem. Prophet is a hyper, loner, rule breaker with out of this world flashbacks. They have great chemistry. I love their banter, their intense attraction and the developing relationship between two clearly relationship phobic men.Since To Catch A Ghost is part of a series it’s not a spoiler to indicate that at the end of the story not much is resolved and Prophet and Tommy’s budding relationship has gone to @#$%.Mick and Blue get the occasional mention – so I’m glad I started with Free Falling first – I hate obvious references to people and/or events I know nothing about.

I originally read this book in the beginning of 2014. I'd say it's been a while ;) But now was the right time to re-read (or rather - re-listen) as Jakes has FINALLY released the 4th and last installment in the series. I'm re-writing my review since I found it to be too all over the place.I'll start by saying I really enjoyed this one. It's fast paced and though the relationship buildup can be "tedious" at times I mostly blame myself.. I'm used to stand alone books, at least where relationship are concerned, but this one is more realistic because these two hardened men, who have LOADS of secrets and issues, NEED their time before an emotional relationship can form. I actually really appreciated that because it was more believable seeing them act upon their attraction but MUCH more hesitant to show ANY kind of emotion and care toward one another.Prophet Drews has worked for EE Enterprise - a private security and operations company - almost from it's beginning. Though he seemed to have a lot of misgivings with the big boss - Phil Butler - in the end, he knows Phil is grooming him to replace him once he is off the field and THAT will happen sometime soon though WHEN exactly they don't know. Prophet has known for a while now he has a medical condition which in the end render him blind. That's a HUGE secret Prophet keeps from most of everyone around him. But that's not his only secret.. His past, mostly losing his best friend since childhood - John Morse - while serving as Navy SEALs together changed him. He is determined even years later to find out what TRULY happened to him.Tom Boudreaux is new at EE. Lucky or unlucky for him, Phil was planning on partnering him with Prophet who seems to be unable to keep a partner. Well, it wasn't much easier for Tom. While Prophet simply doesn't get "attached", Tom's ex-partners were ALL killed. bad luck they say. Bad luck.They are both quite reluctant to working together but their first case throws them into the water if they like it or not and this case is VERY personal for Prophet. John's younger brother Christopher gets killed in what seems to be a wrestling fight. Trying to find the one to blame for the murder is much more difficult than they anticipated but generally through bitching and complaining about one another, being unable to fully trust each other they still seems to work well together. But mostly injury prevents them from finding more than the basics about the case.Regrouping after getting well takes them even further from the case, since it's not really a "case" for EE anymore. But the person who got Christopher killed hasn't said the last word and so he takes someone else Prophet cares about and this time they are WAY over their heads. This is when the past truly comes knocking on Prophet's door and Tom unable to look away follows him to (almost) a certain death.While this book doesn't end with a cliff hanger or anything like it, it's a very unstable place for Prophet and Tom. Too many things were said and even more were UNSAID between them. Tom has made many attempts to get closer to Prophet who in turn keeps pushing him away and Tom is sick and tired of it. Prophet from his side KNOWS he is pushing Tom for the wrong reasons but it's much easier for him to keep flirting with his Spook friend next door - Cillian - than accepting Tom's attempts and actually ACTING upon his feelings. But it's so difficult especially after all the stuff from his past floating around him, now more than ever.Originally I gave this book 4 stars review for a very specific reason and I still stand behind it. This series is TOO similar to "Cut & Run" by Abigail Roux. While I enjoyed this series, I can't ignore the HUGE resemblance between Ty to Prophet and Zane to Tom. They have similar traits and mannerisms and also there are some sub-plots or issues from both characters' past which are strangely similar. There is no way I would read any more of the books in this series. It was too boring, too long, too cryptic throughout the entire book. Hard to understand, flashbacks that took me too long to realize that's what I was reading, and the way he kept talking to "ghosts" was just too much.There are a lot of books I like or dislike that I don't take the time to write a review for, but there was no way I could pass up the opportunity to let everyone know how how pi**ed of I was at the ending of this book. I'm sure the answers to all my MANY questions would be answered in the books to come but there are so many left in this series and this one was so cryptic and confusing that there is no guarantee I'll get answers or understand them when they come.
