Review

“The suspense in this book runs deeper than whether Stroman will live or die. Mr. Giridharadas is most interested in examining the viability of the American dream…an enterprising and clear-eyed reporter.” - Stephen Harrington, Wall Street Journal“Chilling…[D]ares to ask whether Americans can still claim the American dream.” - Oprah.com“Moving and indelible…manifestly inspirational…[A] finely textured portrait of lower-class despair.” - Laura Miller, Salon“A riveting tale, dense with detail, from Giridharadas’ unflinching descriptions of the struggling neighborhoods on the eastern edge of Dallas, to Stroman’s troubled and brutal childhood, to the ebullient optimism of these new Americans determined to create better lives.” - Michael E. Young, Dallas Morning News“Masterful reporting…Thoroughly compelling.” - Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe“Those interested in both the best and worst of what it means to be American should read The True American…[T]he book is too well-written and the characters are too fascinating to miss.” - Amy Kamp, Austin Chronicle“A truly fine book.” - David Brooks“An enthralling real-life tale of murder and forgiveness…enthralling.” - Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs“Exhilarating and deeply affecting, Giridharadas’s book is not only a captivating narrative; it reminds us of the immigrant’s journey at the heart of the American story and how, in the wake of violent tragedy, one new to our country can help us to see through to the best in ourselves, even when the law requires far less.” - Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor, Harvard University“Simply impossible to put down. Just when we thought that we had read everything we could possibly absorb about 9/11, The True American finds a new and compelling perspective, one that explores two sharply opposed dimensions of the American experience in a style that neither celebrates nor condemns. We readers become the jury, weighing what it means to be a true American today.” - Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO of the New America Foundation

I read this book in two days.I felt that I knew the characters personally, I could see and feel them. The detailed description of characters and scenes, combined with quotes from court documents and letters and blogs made me feel like I was part of the story. The book gave me deep insight into some distressed and hopeful souls that all want to belong and struggle to find their identity as Americans. A powerful cultural dissection that should become part of every school's syllabus. The True American is one of the most moving books I've read in a long time and I believe everyone must read it to understand contemporary American life and its implications for the future of a multicultural society.

This is absolutely a "Food For Thought" novel. While trying to put myself in other's shoes, wonder how I would deal with a situation like this. Part of me would like to think that I could try to forgive, put the anger down and go on with my life. Doing good for someone who has not experienced people doing good for them in their lifetime could possibly change this one person or this person's family and maybe that's the way it should be. One person at a time. Certainly can't deal with the magnitudes. I can understand the feelings on both sides. After 911, U.S. citizens were very angry for the hurt that was dealt to our country and we really didn't know who the enemy was. Good people are in "the mix" and good people get hurt when they weren't guilty at all. It was just random lashing out if we saw someone who looked like they could be the bad guy. Very sad book, but like I said, great food for thought.';

This is an interesting book. It tells the story of a Pakistani man who immigrated to this country and was shot shortly after September 11. He later attempted to show mercy to his attacker who had been sentenced to death for his crimes. It is an important book for this time, when immigrants are under appreciated.

Humbling. Noble. This story has places where it's probably overly detailed (like the whole bull riding accident description at the end seemed way too much for way too little), but I would commend this read to anyone. And if we could somehow come to embrace our faith and embrace others' belief in the way this remarkable young man shows is possible, our planet would be a far more inhabitable and peaceful place and we might actually live up to the moniker of being "civilized."

"The True American" is a superb account by Anand Giridharadas of a homicide/hate crime that transpired in Dallas, TX and how that event crystallized the "cycle of revenge" that - in the words of the Dallas Morning News Editorial Board - "doesn't stop until someone has the courage to say enough." That someone is Rais Bhuiyan, that crime's victim and, ultimately, this story's hero, a man who rose from near death, willed himself to a successful life here in Dallas and offered forgiveness and compassion to his would-be killer. The twist of the book is that the killer, Mark Stroman, had his own moral awakening, brought about, said Ilan Ziv (a documentary filmmaker), "[N]ot because we did anything, but because of who we were. His old world betrayed him, and a new group of people who was more loyal to him than his own family introduced him to our world." It's to the author's extreme credit that you're never entirely sure to which of the two protagonists 'The True American' title applies.I paid special attention to this book because events played out very close to my home here in Dallas. As a northerner with decades living here, I related to this excellent passage describing Dallas' unique and often hard-to-explain charm ("we killed Kennedy," after all -- we're still living that down 50 years on). Of Dallas, Giridharadas says:-----To the outside eye, especially the northern eye, [Dallas] could be dismissed as a gussied-up, diverse, but ultimately narrow backwater...To see Dallas in this way, however, was to bring to it a view that many of its own immigrants, including Rais, didn't share. Enormous numbers of them genuinely loved it, and they continued to arrive by the planeload. They loved, for starters, the sky and the roads and the low taxes that had brought Rais to the city long ago. But it was more than that. A newcomer like Rais could find in Dallas a kind of acceptance that New York or Washington or Los Angeles didn't give...It was a city without elusive codes. You didn't have to wonder how to dress in public, for almost any semi-respectable way of dressing would put you above average; or what knife to use with which course, because that wasn't really how they ate down here; or what subway carried you where, since most people had their own bubble of a car. What many immigrants found in Dallas was a dimension of America's tolerance that was the tolerance of casualness and convenience more than of open-mindedness: an ease of living that became its own kind of welcome.-----I can't tell you how just how trenchantly well-observed that passage is. It speaks volumes as to why such large, vibrant immigrant communities flourish here.

In The Open Organization, Jim Whitehurst presents a compelling, modern alternative to the traditional top-down hierarchy of business organization. Born from the open source software movement, Whitehurst advocates for a participative organization that values ability more than title. Throughout the book Whitehurst shares personal examples of his own transformation from a traditional leader to an open one. The stories are sometimes embarrassing, but his honesty and frankness are a key part of what defines a successful leader in an open organization.Even better, to my mind, are the examples that Whitehurst shares of other companies and leaders on the cutting edge of the open organization model. It's one thing to read a personal account of one company's efforts; but to see that company in the context of a larger movement to redefine the structure of success in the business world is truly eye opening.I've been using and contributing to open source software for over a decade, so much of what Whitehurst shares feels self-evident to me. Of course collaborative decision making is hard and messy, but of course the results are almost always better than one person making command decision alone. Despite my own belief in the power of openness, I had yet to see a thorough examination of the business value to such an approach, versus the community value.I had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Whitehurst for TechCrunch.com in early 2012 (http://tcrn.ch/Ix8AKF) and the seeds of many of the ideas in The Open Organization were clearly present even then. Reading The Open Organization felt, in some ways, like the conclusion to that interview.Despite my familiarity with open source and my first-hand history with many of the ideas in this book, I found The Open Organization to be a compelling read. The tone is conversational, and easy to read. Examples are plentiful and thought provoking. The scope of the book is appropriate for C-level executives, middle managers, and even individual contributors: an open organization works better when all members participate fully. One of the things I liked best about the book are the numerous -- yet practical -- calls to action. Each chapter closes with "Jim's Leadership Tips", which is a simple list of questions and suggestions to try within your own organization. These are not sweeping pronouncements, nor are they particularly challening. They are suggestions for things you can try right now, today, to start building success with an open organization. The scope of these suggestions is almost always small, allowing you to try them out one at a time, either with an individual or small team.Whitehurst does not shy away from the reality that an open organization is hard work. It takes a real committment from leadership to pursue the model that Whitehurst proposes. He reiterates this fact several times through each chapter. But evidence -- from within Red Hat, as well as from other organizations cited in the book -- indicates that the results can be nothing short of amazing.

Put these ideas together.Bureaucracy is the organizational form designed to maximize control, coordination, and consistency to produce efficiency and reliability. It worked effectively when workers performed rote tasks on assembly lines or in offices. Today we use robots to do these mundane tasks reliably, accurately and efficiently.Your staff’s abilities that can have the biggest impact on the success of your company, are the ones that cannot be managed. These include enthusiasm, caring, commitment, creativity and so on.For the last three decades I have come across examples of companies that were designed in anti-bureaucratic forms and that worked exceptionally well, such as the Spanish Mondragon Corporation (75,000 people,) or W.L. Gore (9,000 people in 30 countries). In an era when a technology-enabled mob can overthrow a dictator, the business question is whether the same energy can be used to drive organizations, serve customers, produce goods or develop software.Jim Whitehurst believes it can and he is in a unique position to make this assertion. As the former chief operating officer at Delta Air Lines, where he took a lead role in the company’s much needed restructuring, he understood and ran a top -down, command and control organization. He currently heads Red Hat, the world’s leading provider of open-source software, employing more than 7,000 people and with a market value of more than $ 10 billion. Its software is trusted to power submarines, and its customers include the New York Stock Exchange, DreamWorks, Sprint and 90 percent of the Fortune 500 companies. Some fifty years ago, the leadership thinker, Warren Bennis, predicted that we would be in organizations that feel like communities, not hierarchies. This is no longer an ideal, it is a business necessity. Beating your competition is no longer a one-time event with a clever strategy that lasts forever. Simply pedalling faster is not enough, and central planning is too time- and resource- consuming.Whitehurst saw an alternative way in the process at Red Hat and describes its powerful method as “the Open Organization.” Similar methods are in use in the many successful companies he cites. General Electric’s Durham jet engine plant has 400 skilled technicians working in self-organizing teams, with the supervision of only one plant manager. Something similar exists in Whole Foods, Pixar, Zappos and Starbucks. These are “communities” where the principles are different. The basis for loyalty is a common purpose, not economic dependency. Openness, transparency, participation, and collaboration are the very reasons the companies make money. The best ideas win, regardless of who they come from. This book is important because so many executives can scarcely imagine an alternative to the organizational status quo, even if they know that bureaucracy is hobbling their organizations and slowing them up. They can feel how close their faster, more nimble universal competitors have come, and they know the danger. An “open organization” responds to opportunities more quickly, accesses talent and inspires, motivates and empowers people at all levels to act with accountability. So, how does one move towards an open organization? It starts with the realization that this is a journey not an event, and that many things will have to be different, starting with executive behaviour.Whitehurst shares a seminal experience he had soon after joining Red Hat. “Early on, I issued what I thought was an order to create a research report. A few days later, I asked the people assigned to the task how things were going. “Oh, we decided it was a bad idea, so we scrapped it,” they told me in good cheer.”Whitehurst’ response was that the team was correct to turn down the job if they thought it was not a good idea, or as importantly, because he had failed to convince them of its importance.Open organizations such as Red Hat are the product of complex, subtle, and powerful organizing systems that truly free people to take more initiative, be more creative and more effective. As business get harder it is easy to forget the role of passion in an organization. The leader’s role in a twenty-first-century organization includes being the “cheerleader-in-chief.” Having boundless passion for the mission is common in start-ups but seems to fade as the organization grows. The 7,000 people in Red Hat spread across more than 80 offices, and working remotely worldwide, are fired by the passion most companies ignore.Only a deep passion for what the organization stands for drives people to bring their all to their work. Whole Foods has as their purpose nothing less than to provide food and beverages so that their customers become healthier and live fuller lives. Open-source is no different for those who work at Red Hat.Passion will fade unless it is diligently, carefully and consistently nurtured.“The Open Organization” is a chronicle of successful practices that Whitehurst uses to fire employees’ passion and really engage them. Engagement is not serving sushi lunches, but rather actually engaging with people, and enabling them to engage with their work and colleagues. The book shows how everyone can and should have an earned level of influence through the merit they display. Most importantly, it is a fine description of the changing nature of leadership required today. This book could change the way your company functions and change your level success.Readability Light --+-- SeriousInsights High -+--- LowPractical High -+--- Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author of Strategy that Works.

I read this with a purpose to better understand Red Hat and the culture of the organization. In that respect I made a really good choice and satisfied my needs. Beyond that, Jim Whitehurst’s story of his journey from Delta to Red Hat and the earliest eye openers of engagement with Company leaders made a great and captivating story. I am better for the read and would encourage others who want to get a view of a meritocracy to join me.

I'll admit right up front that I'm biased on two counts: Jim Whitehurst describes a leadership style I had to adopt many years ago, with great success; and I am a new Red Hat employee. Still, any modern leader in business should give this a read.

As a manager, you should strive to find means to ignite passion and pleasure to work together for your company. As for employees, a sense of belonging to a community is very important. You should not avoid getting help even from outside your company, as a collaboration, for a common aim : keeping your organization on the cutting edge, and competitive on the long run. We've had examples for such blueprints : the Internet for its opennes, Wikipedia for its collaborative works, crowdsourcing for its power of mass participation (the wisdow of the crowd)This book helps you open your eyes beautifully on better management expectations, and on how to feel better in every field of your professional life. And you don't feel alone because there a real community already behind this attitude

As a CEO I found great insight. Mr Whitehurst is a clear and thoughtful leader. He provides solid advice and direction for creating and supporting an open organization. This is a must read for organization leaders and future leaders!

In "Unstoppable", Bill Nye argues, "A certain amount of global warming and weather disruption is baked in; in a word, it is unstoppable. But you know what? So are we. Humans, and human progress, are also unstoppable" (p. 326). There are three main points to his argument. First, he explains all of the overwhelming scientific evidence of climate change to prove, once and for all, its existence to any doubter who may have picked up his book. Second, Nye examines all of the different proposed methods for cutting back on carbon emissions, from the unrealistic (like giant solar reflectors in space) to existent technologies that need only be refined (such as better windmills, batteries, electric cars, and the technology Nye himself uses to effect a form of energy independence in his own home). The final part of Nye's argument, which runs throughout "Unstoppable", is a call to younger readers, whom he calls "The Next Great Generation," to take up this challenge and solve it. Though they cannot stop global warming, they can slow its escalation and minimize its impact.Like Nye's previous book, "Undeniable", this book focuses on big ideas and represents and appeal from the author directly to his readers to stop fearing or denying science because it only serves to hurt us as a society. His great sense of optimism and wit permeates every chapter so that even those portions that casual readers may find dull have their share of entertainment. As Nye proved on the "Science Guy" show, humor is an effective tool in education. That said, he is serious when the topic calls for it. "Unstoppable" should serve as a wake-up call to readers around the world to get actively engaged not only in petitioning their governments to do something about climate change, but to implement many of the small-scale ideas that Nye is already using in his own home. Together, we can change the world!

When I first purchased this book I thought it strictly about climate change, global warming. Although the issue of climate change is clearly the main motivator of the text, more emphasis is placed on methods of efficiency, which for the most part mediates climate issues. That being said, I do not recommend this book to anybody who expects to read it and get a comprehensive summary on what climate change is and the evidence for it. Many ideas to improve the earth are covered and proposed, such as: carbon-free vehicles, efficient production of clean water, clean energy generation and use, and effective energy storage to name a few.Certain other things were interesting:I found it fascinating that Bill officially took a side on GMOs: he's pro GMO now. If anyone follows it closely, you might know that before he was unsure and skeptical of the benefits of GMOs when compared to possible unintended consequences. After visiting a few Monsanto and research facilities (and gonig to an anti-GMO rally), his mind changed. Most of the resistance he has seen to genetically modified foods has less to do with the perceived safety of the food or ecosystems but with a basic mistrust in large corporations. An interesting fact: about 30 percent of the earth is land for us plants and animals; humans farm about 11 percent of that dry land area; and yet 1 and 7 people are hungry. Its not that we don't have enough food he says, because experts estimate only about 55 percent of the calories we produce on farms get successfully incorporated into a humans diets. The only one other species with the power to change the climate of an entire planet, thats the cyanobacteria better known as the blue-green algae.Carbon dioxide molecules allow visible light with certain wavelengths to pass through but block the reradiated light rays that are of a different wavelength (infrared). This is why reducing CO2 emissions is vital towards improving accelerated climate change. Some other interesting methods are reflecting heat into the atmosophere through hydrosol, the name given to when nature produces bubbles in a liquid. Also increasing the albedo (amount of incoming light reflected back into space) by making white roofs and pavement.Bill's sticking points are his lack of transition, despite the text being subdivided by so many chapters, and his frequent excursions; his lack of notes; and his lack of visuals which would have helped envision a lot, especially as a young reader. Positively speaking, he has a large expanse of knowledge and possesses good didactic skills - the text reads smoothly and is conversationally toned.3.9/5

I recommend this to all students, educators, past and present. You and I live on the same planet, this is our home, we must do something before it is too late.If you are a climate denier, please read, the science is there, it is all around us. Wouldn't it be better to err on the side of caution, rather than when it has caused damage to you personally?Though Mr. Nye and I disagree on certain concepts I whole heartedly support the ideas found in this book, especially the chapters regarding NASA and NASCAR.This should be required reading for everyone.

Lots of information to get you thinking. I don't understand even if people don't think climate change is true why don't we develop new technologies that are clean? It is a no-brainer to me lets get ahead of the game and be the ones manufacturing these devices.Lots of subjects, lots of information, best part Bill is the one reading it! Nothing better then hearing his little play on words and jokes in his own voice. I have seen where some people have pointed out some issues with battery power, energy per rate, and so on but to me those are minor things that will not take away from someone wanting to learn more about green energy and making a brighter future. (Yes for a science guy book they should not have made it to the final copy and print but for every day readers I don't think you will notice the issues. If it gets you wanting to know more then Unstoppable did its job and got you on your way to learning more.)

This book is easy to understand and fun to read. You don't need a degree in engineering or physics to understand the ideas presented in this book. It takes an idea which, regrettably, seems insurmountable at times and breakes it down into bite-sized pieces that leave you feeling hopeful and ready for action. While there are some futuristic technology discussed, most of the potential change would come from existing technology. The suggestions in this book are not only possible, they're doable. Right now.

#408,054 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was a very young girl when Pearl Harbor was bombed. WW2 is very vague in my mind. I saw movies and newsreel footage growing up but I did not realize the importance of world events. The European front was brought home as we had Polish family members as well as German grandparents. An Uncle sent me letters onh tissue paper and was in the Philippines. But as far as knowing world-wide happenings, I was too young to understand much of what I heard. Mr. Velmans memoir was clear and completely understandable. I cried as he told of events in the prisons. He gave a clear and understanding explanation of Spring Camp. I often wondered about comments I heard regarding Japan. My daughter's in-laws, Japanese-American family were interned in Camps but they never discussed it. I'm glad to have learned a first hand account of this time. We have heard many times the German Camps and struggle of the Jewish people, but these events have gone by undisclosed as far as I am concerned.

Loet Yelmans book Long Way Back To The River Kwai was written with personal crisis about his family and his experience of being at various POW camps. He brought out facts that may never have been known. It was difficult to see how prisoners were being treated during the second world war.I personally think he did an outstanding job of giving me, the reader a new incite about the war. Very well done

The author lived a comfortable and decent life as part of a sizable Jewish population in Amsterdam. When he was 17, the Nazi's invaded, and the Dutch army capitulated on May 14, 1940. His parents and the family of his cousin made an escape by boat and were picked up by a Royal Navy warship, and delivered to England. They later moved on to the Dutch East Indies, where they believed they would be safe from Nazi attacks. No one worried about the Japanese. Loet was drafted into the Royal Dutch East Indies Army; when the Japanese attacked, the East Indies Army was forced to capitulate. Loet was eventually captured and sent to labor, as part of a quarter-million-man slave labor force, on the infamous Thailand-Burma railroad. The Japanese had nothing but contempt for any warrior who surrendered and submitted to be a prisoner. Therefore, they considered their POWs as sub-human and treated them as such. This theme is constant throughout the half-dozen books I've read in the last few months about Japanese and Nazi treatment of POWs. The prisoners working on the railroad - made infamous by the book and movie about the bridge on the River Kwai - died in great numbers, from starvation, capricious beatings, bludgeoning, summary execution, disease, accidents, drowning, etc. That Loet Velmans survived the treatment he was subjected to is incredible; that he was able to start a new life after repatriation to Holland. He married the sister of an old friend, moved to New York, and began a successful career. That career carried him to many overseas assignments, including a trip to....Japan. He only hints at the uneasiness of his business dealings with the Japanese; I admire him for his courage in facing the people who could have been the brothers or comrades-in-arms of his tormenters.Like all the first-person POW testimonials I have read, it was difficult to read but necessary. Sadly, such inhuman treament did not end when that war ended, and we should read these accounts so that those memories will not fade. Unfortunately, such activities can and will be repeated. "But for the Grace of God"..... US Navy, retired

I have now read Loet Velman's memoir as well as that of his wife Edith. Remarkable people! Or probably ordinary people thrust into horrific circumstances. It is hard to read, most certainly difficult to pull up into memory and dwell on, but even harder to live through I am sure. I commend them both for writing, facing the past, and not letting us forget how evil can try to overcome. This book is well-written, concise, and does not dwell on the bad but merely describes it and moves on. You will remember and be moved, but read it and you won't be able to deny history and hopefully work to avoid a repeat.

I am amazed by the detailed recall of this man considering the abominations he suffered. I found his descriptions frightening and the described misery almost unbelievable. This book certainly has beautiful language and composition, though, as I'm not a scholar of political environment, I'm unable to comment as to the correctness of many of his assessments. Very horrifying and a great memoir of significance. Don't let history repeat itself.

This is a very gripping read by someone who experienced World War II in both theaters and gives a first-hand account of what his friends, family and those around him experienced. What I personally liked is that he detailed his life after the war to include his career, the places he lived and his opinions of the Japanese in the post-war period. He writes clearly and provides enough detail to help you understand what occurred which helps make it interesting.I very much recommend this to all who have an interest in the human condition.

Although many books have dealt with this topic, lately there does not seem to be any new perspective from the victims, and as usual nothing from the Japanese point of view. When I was in the Boy Scouts (mid 60's), my scoutmaster was a survivor of the Bataan Death March. He would tell us some stories that appalled us. His son, our age, told me one day that there were stories he would only tell his family, and many he could not bring himself to share with anyone. As Velman points out in this book, many of the veterans who survived died early in life. My scoutmaster was about 55 when he died, never completely cured of his malaria and beri-beri. Velman's book should be read by anyone who is not familiar with this part of history, but for those who are knowledgeable, he provides an interesting psychological perspective of how the prisoners' looked at the death of their friends, and how they survived. Another book that should be required reading is "Unbroken."

I read this as I like travel logs about small boats. Theroux is an excellent writer, and it's fun to get lost in the details of this trip that covers all of the major stopping points in Oceana. The only reason I have left off the fifth star is that as a traveler and an ethnographer, he tends to form a negative view or at least a narrative that focuses on the negatives of each culture he encounters. After a while, the book starts seeming like a catalog of "what is wrong with these people and this place". A great deal of that is appropriate, however, and the book is a definite knockdown of any dreamy ideas of "Gaugin's Paradise" in favor of the brutal realities of how the modern world is affecting or has affected the places and cultures of Oceana as of the late '80s. It also presents some pretty good evidence as to why Thor Heyerdahl's theories about migration are dead wrong.

Many reviewers of this book cited the author's melancholy in the early chapters. Divorce is depressing!I have visited many of the islands covered in this comprehensive overview of Oceania and found the descriptions to be remarkably consistent with my experiences. If you've never been to the Pacific Islands, this will give you a true feel for the varied and exotic peoples and locations. Mr. Theroux spent a good deal of time in the Solomons, which are not nearly as developed and accessible as the better known chains (Cook Islands, Society Islands, Hawaii). I found his description of American Samoa particularly interesting as I was married to a Samoan and visited family on the island. The comments about Pago Pago are spot on. The opening chapters on Australia and New Zealand were fascinating.

Before reading this book, I read through some of the reviews on here. Needless to say, I had the preconceived notion that this book was going to be the diatribe of a misanthropic, bitter wanderer. Although there are some moments where Theroux gets carried away with unkind portraits - his descriptions of Tongans and Samoans, for example - he is not the monster that many of the reviews here paint him as. Not everybody can be happy all the time, and that's more or less how he tells the story. If you have never read Paul Theroux, then perhaps you will be a bit shocked at his raw cynicism. I, for one, am a big fan. This is the blood and guts of world travel. Nobody can be completely open to a new culture or worldview, and certain things are bound to be annoying. The entire adventure of his literary tour in Australia, for example, points out the nagging, dragging questions of people unfamiliar with his work yet trying to conduct journalistic interviews. It isn't until he is rumbling over the outback that he meets a rural Australian who knows and admires his work - rather unexpectedly, at that. Also, one must remember that Theroux puts it right on the table that he is going through some serious issues in his life - a rough marriage break up, health issues, and feelings of alienation - and is removing himself from the mundane to paddle away his problems.I, for one, feel like this is one of Theroux's finest books. It is devoid of a real theme and lets you paddle alongside Theroux and his emotional travails. I've traveled a bit in Melanesia, and I find his descriptions to be quite apt. Trouble is everywhere in paradise. Murky, trashed lagoons and quarreling kin networks. Bugs, nagging children, and hustlers. But also, there is the hospitality, the betel nut, the amazing conversations, the unique and unexpected characters and, of course, the bleeding sunsets and turquoise, coral-studded seas.

I can't remember if it was this book or Kingdom By The Sea that was the first of Theroux's travel books I ever read. 'Kingdom by the Sea' turned out to be one of may favorite books and I have read it several times. This book, though, is also quite good and I have read it twice now.A lot of people have been very critical of Mr Theroux's travel writing but I do not share their opinions for the most part. I am not a happy traveler so I like to hear about somebody else's experiences in places I will likely never visit. I don't require a thorough, properly researched and documented sociological study in these books... I just want to be entertained. Theroux does so in this book and quite a few of his others that I have read. After reading this book I had a fuller appreciation that many of these pacific islands are considerably less like the paradises they have elsewhere been held out to be. Perhaps Theroux rather crankily overstates this, as some have suggested, but I recognize people will come away from a given place with different impressions than others. That is only to be expected and should in no way diminish one's enjoyment of a good read.C John Thompson

I can't begin to say how much I enjoyed reading this book. I have seen the BBC series several times and I enjoyed the brief video at the end that gave a hint about the process of production, but this is so much more in depth and I was never bored because I never imagined how much work and how many factors have to be considered in order to produce a film project--particularly one as excellent as this one turned out to be.It isn't one of those books where your interest will be captured by the photos and the captions and you'll just browse the text. With the possible exception of the pages that showed a typical day's scheduled activities, every other page is fascinating. I only wish the photos had been a little larger. For some group pictures I had to take out a magnifying glass to identify the faces.

I love this book! I have never been a movie fan. As Mary in P&P says, "I would infinitely prefer a book". However, when I saw the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice, I was totally blown away. The passion and quality of the acting, the scenery, the costumes, was so incredibly moving! So, I watched the bonus that came with the movie, and was so impressed with how passionate Sue Birtwhistle, Andrew Davies, Simon Langton and Gerry Scott were about the book and movie, that I craved to learn more. When I saw this book available, I had to have it. What a treasure trove! The interview with Colin Firth was worth the book, but the information on the costumes, choosing the filming sites, etc., are fascinating. I honor the people involved in this project. I love to see anyone do a job with all their heart. The skill, commitment, and passion evidenced in this movie deserves the highest honor.

2003's "The Making of Pride and Prejudice" is a peek behind the scenes at the transformation of Jane Austen's classic romance novel into the 1995 BBC television production, a classic in its own right.Sue Birwhistle and Susie Conklin walk the reader through the entire process, from selling the idea to a reluctant studio, to Andrew Davies' superb adaptation of the novel into six TV episodes, through casting, preproduction, shooting, and finally postproduction. The book is filled with comments from the workers on both sides of the camera, and illustrated with fascinating set photography.Recreating the 19th Century required extensive research into such mundane matters as period costumes, hairstyles, drapery patterns, furniture, and music and dance. Months of pre-production paid off in an authentic look, at the cost of daily two-hour costume and make-up sessions for the actors and nightly refreshing of sets. Minor challenges included the delicate task of keeping food presentable for the three day shoot of the Netherfield supper party.Location shooting, even in a country rich with old homes, required patient negotiation with owners over the restoration of house and grounds to a 19th century appearance. The expenses of production required shooting by location vice chronological order; Colin Firth notes his very first scene was Darcy's marriage proposal to Elizabeth.Casting presented its own challenges for such a popular story. The book shares the concerns of the actors, along with some interesting before and after make-up portraits. A highlight is an extended interview with Colin Firth on the challenges of the role of Mr. Darcy. Jennifer Ehle adds her own comments on the grueling five month shooting schedule, which required her presence on set for all but five days."The Making of Pride and Prejudice" will be equally fascinating to dedicated fans of the BBC television version and those interested in the actual details of production. This book is very highly recommended to both audiences.

The perfect complement to a viewing of the best-ever Pride and Prejudice production. Firth and Ehle never disappoint. ( I only hope I spelled "Lizzie's" last name correctly). This book says everything about the joys and challenges of transferring a novel to the screen.

Excellent books for the Jane Austen fans w lots of information on the A&E/BBC / Jennifer Ehle/Colin Firth production. This version is our favorite video of P&P and this book is lavishly adorned with behind the scenes photos and pre-production and production information showing the detailed cosideration that serves as the foundation of great movies. NICE!

First, I have to say that I have NEVER bought a "Behind the Scenes" book on ANY movie. I stumbled across "The Making of Pride and Prejudice" on Amazon. Sue Birtwistle's adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" IS probably my favorite movie of all time, but the previous reviews on Amazon convinced me that I would like the book as well.If you truly enjoyed the movie, I hope that you will take a chance and read, "The Making of Pride and Prejudice" by Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin - even if you don't normally read this type of book. It is FASCINATING. It isn't just all the wonderful pictures (and how DIFFERENT the actors looked!); it is that this book methodically explains the concept behind the movie, the writing, the casting, the houses ("Pemberley" is actually at Lyme Park), the costumes, the wigs (Jennifer Ehle is a BLONDE!) and so many more interesting facts.I was particularly amazed that Colin Firth originally TURNED DOWN the role of Darcy - because he didn't feel that he could do justice to the part. (Most of us can't imagine ANYONE except Firth playing the role!) Sue Birtwistle had to convince him to do the part. (And he was so nervous that he was physically ill initially.)This is a terrific book, which chronicles the process of making a truly magnificent movie.
