After rereading the book recently, I have renewed respect for Professor Soh – she has taken a very courageous step to reject the ‘master narrative’ of the comfort women issue by providing so much on the historical background of Korea as well as revealing information on many of the comfort women survivors, facts that are conveniently left out by activists of the redress movement. It is no wonder that Chong Dae Hyup, the main organization that promotes the movement in South Korea, no longer wants to do anything with Professor Soh, but her name not being on the list of academics supporting the 2015 Open Letter in Support of Historians in Japan, an attempt to pressure Japan to further acknowledge and once again account for the ‘past wrongs,’ really speaks volumes.More than anyone in American academia, she fully understands the complexity of the issue as demonstrated in her extensive research, and she is undoubtedly the most qualified to discuss the matter objectively, having received education in Japanese, Korean, and English. Moreover, she is currently a resident and scholar in the United States, making her independent of any activist groups from overseas, which allows her to speak freely without compromising academic integrity. While I personally do not support transnational feminism which is what the professor identifies herself with, this book must be thoroughly studied in order to partake in any reasonable discussion on the issue of Imperial Japan’s Comfort Women system. A solid 4.5 stars for the depth of the research and the overall objectivity that is maintained throughout the book.

This book provides a much-needed alternate angle of the comfort women experiences. Because the era and the situation was so tragic, most accounts are written in a narrative that everything was terrible, all of these women hated every aspect of their miserable lives, and that is the only way to interpret this time in history. C. Sarah Soh comes in and offers to tell the largely ignored accounts of the women that had neutral or even positive things to say about things that happened to them. She is not glorifying anything that happened at this time, just offering the testimonies that do not fit into the popular narrative. The events of this period are still tragic, and I support the survivors' seeking closure by way of an official apology, but I appreciate being able to see more sides of the situation to get a fuller picture.Only fours stars because sometimes the writing got awkward, like when she would unnecessarily provide the Korean pronunciation for a random word. Some made sense because they were thematic and appeared often throughout the book, but others seemed to just be there as a reminder that you are reading about people in another country who spoke another language.

This work is likewise ill-suited for those who aren't serious readers of history.C. Sarah Soh, as a native Korean who was fortunate to receive formal education both in her homeland and abroad, has produced a masterful examination of a controversial issue involving Korea and Japan which people from both countries have long oversimplified.Koreans generally believe that Imperial Japan's leadership ordered, planned, and executed the gunpoint kidnapping of thousands of Korean females and summarily shipped them like chattel to frontline brothels.Japanese people - at least those who know this issue - either agree that the Koreans were largely victimized, or claim that this is a gross fabrication and that the comfort women were essentially willing prostitutes.Professor Soh cites several examples, such as interviews with survivors, to show that the truth is far more complex. Some survivors stated they were not forcibly taken by Japanese troops. Others are shown to have bought their way to freedom with earnings - earnings??? Yes. Hence the question - if the comfort women were slaves, they wouldn't have had wages. Then what were they: slaves or prostitutes or something else?Additionally, Professor Soh does the reader a huge service by detailing the sociocultural contexts of 1930s-1940s Korea and Japan. Information on views on sex, women, and the sexism that characterized pre-modern Korean and Japanese societies is provided, thus presenting the reader with a better understanding of what facilitated the existence of "sex care work" in both societies. Anyone familiar with Korea and Japan today will be aware that extramarital affairs have been generally tolerated, historically speaking, and that older men have often availed themselves of sexual services provided by far younger women.The comfort women issue did not happen in a vacuum. Japanese generals didn't wake up one day, deciding to 'award' their enlisted men with females to sate their urges, and they didn't decide to violently seize thousands of Korean women at will. As a reader of Korean ethnicity myself, I know this is a painful subject, and I personally believe there were abductions. But as the attentive reader will see, the story is far more diverse and much more complicated that flag-waving nationalists on either side of the East Sea (or, as some call it, the Sea of Japan), would want us to believe.It is worth noting (somewhat of a spoiler alert) that Professor Soh was shunned and coldly treated by South Koreans who are involved in the redress movement after those activists learned of the fruits of her research. I wonder why. Did Professor Soh's findings upset their ostensibly benign agenda? Is there something she uncovered the redress activists preferred not to even know and prefer that their compatriots remain ignorant of?If the comfort women issue is of any interest to you, read this book. It is a must-have in the library of any serious student of Korea's modern history.

Fantastic work viewing the comfort women issue in light of gender issues. Well-researched and footnoted, and yet written in a very accessible way that's an easy read.

I enjoyed reading this book, because it has a balanced yet in-depth look at the Comfort Women in Korea. It was educating yet sobering to learn about all the different complicated circumstances that lead to militarized prostitution.

This has become a painful read. Not the material - just the author and her facination with big words. It's been mentioned previously in other comments. She also loves to add suffixes to make basic words seem big as well. Overall the book doesn't flow well. I've still got to finish the book for a college class but dreading it.

Goodman's bookThis is a thin book, but gives the beginner just what they need to answer the basic questions. It is written well and very informative. Judge Goodman also has a similar book for Arbitrators I also recommend.

Mr. Goodman's book is the finest quick primer for a new arbitrator I have ever read. For virtually anyone familiar with any type of legal procedure or mediation, the book lays out the differences specific to Arbitration. Mr. Goodman has arranged the book, so that he presents the answers to the 100 most commonly asked questions about Arbitration.The layout that he uses is in order of the Arbitration process, and thus, the questions and answers are in "as needed" sequence. This makes the book a very useful quick reference tool on all the major topics of the process of Arbitration.The book is very highly recommended to attorneys, mediators and other legal professionals as a very compact and explicit guide and quick reference book about the procedures of Arbitration.

First, I was surprised how slim the book was. But after just a few pages I realized the author states things in a very straight-forward, easy to understand format. Yes, you CAN get a lot of info from under 100 pages. I highlighted a lot.I also appreciated there was no "self-glorification" stories aka "Look how brilliant I am."The sample mediator agreement in the appendix was worth the price of the book alone.

I bought this book before I attended a basic mediation class. I loved the format - basically, it asks a question and then answers it point by point. I shared it around the class and everyone thought it was great. It addresses so many things - caucuses, mediation vs. arbitration, and plenty of other questions beginners don't know enough to ask. I wish the same people would publish a how to start your own mediation practice book.

Good book but it is lacking of the technique to deal with people who want to settle the issue but insisting to be right by using "for me, this is what I feel and it is for me"

Matthew Lippman is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and has taught criminal law and criminal procedure in the Department of Criminology, Law, and Justice for more than thirty years. He has also taught courses on civil liberties, law and society, and terrorism and teaches international criminal law at John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He earned a doctorate in political science from Northwestern University and a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School, and is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar. He has been voted by the graduating seniors at UIC to receive the Silver Circle Award for outstanding teaching on six separate occasions and has also received the UIC Flame Award from the University of Illinois Alumni Association, as well as the Excellence in Teaching Award, Teaching Recognition (Portfolio) Award, Honors College Fellow of the Year Award and HOPE Award. The university chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the criminal justice honors society, named him “criminal justice professor of the year” on three occasions. In 2008, he was recognized as College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Master Teacher. He was honored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which named him Commencement Marshal at the May 2012 graduation. .Professor Lippman is author of one hundred articles, two coauthored books and one single authored books. These publications focus on criminal law and criminal procedure, international human rights, and comparative law. He also is author of five other SAGE volumes, Contemporary Criminal Law: Concepts, Cases, and Controversies (5th ed., 2019); Criminal Procedure (3rd ed., 2017); Law and Society (2nd ed. 2018); Criminal Evidence (2016) and Striking the Balance: Debating Criminal Justice and Law (20188). This book is PACKED with cases and proper legal terminology. It was used in my Admnistration of Justice classes in college and was definitely a tool I'd reccomend to a teacher or to a diligent student who wants a nice textbook to add to their catalog. It really helped me form opinions about certain cases as well as formulate proper questions as to constitutional rights as well as law, infringement of other persons rights, and much more. Some of the terminology however will not be used in police field work, this is more for lawyer types and prospective detectives.Edit: after a semester of use, it's still in really good shape unlike most paperback books! I was a little rough with it but I'm sure people take better care of textbooks than I might. Added pictures after semester ended. Definitely has good resale value!

I rented this book from Amazon and I really loved it. I had to use this book for school and I love how much information is in this book. The cases that are used in here relates to the whole chapter and it is very interesting. Criminal Justice is my passion so I most definitely would recommend.

Chapter 9 is repeated twice!! And the first chapter 9 has a lot of chapter 8 in it! Edit to add: its missing 50 pages in between chapter 9 and 10!

If you're looking at this book for casual reading I would advise you to keep looking, but this is a pretty good book for class. I'm currently using it in my criminal law (CJA 354) class as the required reading. With the class, we read chapters according to the syllabus, but without the class this would be a hefty read as there are almost 600 pages of reading material.This is a book I'll be taking with me to law school as it does contain some pretty helpful material and it is well written. The author lists cases and then discusses those cases, but the main focus of the book are many concepts to law. For example, the book goes into great detail about constitutional limitations, actus rea (criminal acts) and mens rea (criminal intent), justification and defense excuses, crimes against public order and morality, etc.One thing that I'm not crazy about is that there is a section in Appendix A that discusses what needs to go into a court citation (e.g. Jones v. United States, 308 F.2D), but it does not go into great detail and is actually kind of vague. I'm a visual guy and it would have been nice if a visual example and breakdown were included, but I guess that's where the internet comes in handy.Buy this book used and you'll save a bundle of cash. I did and my book looks brand new. Missing some crucial/famous poems from some of the poets. A book like this should be an overview/introduction, and therefore these seem like glaring omissions. Although there are some decent introductions to poets and movements, the fact is that most of these poems can be found for free online, and the anthology should add more material. Overpriced for what it is.

The second edition of this text was very good; the third edition is exceptional. the introductory essay on modernism in the first volume is worth the purchase of the book and the essays accompanying each poet are extremely valuable. the third edition has, in addition to the poetry, some seminal critical essays (such as t.s. eliot's "tradition and the individual talent"). i love this anthology and greedily devoured the whole 1000 page first volume this past month (july 2005) while on vacation. I am a third of the way through the second volume.a notable difference between the second and third editions is that the basic introduction to verse forms (meter etc.) has been ommitted from the third edition. i always liked this essay and wish that the editors had retained it as an appendix.lastly, robinson jeffers' poem "shiva" was dropped from the third edition, which i took as a bit of a loss.

There are detailed biographies for every other in the book, and the book is organized in chronological order. For some poets, like Dorothy Parker, there are only a handful of poems while others, such as Auden, have over a dozen. Overall, it's a well organized anthology that's actually pretty easy to use as a textbook.

This book has a treasure of information. I bought it for a class I'm auditing, and can't wait to delve further into it for additional help after the course is over. I love the biographies that put the poetry into context. However, the paper is thin, and it's hard to take notes that don't show through to the other side of the paper. Still, for the price it's a great buy.

This is one of the best leadership books I've read. Regardless of your interest in football or Urban Meyer or Ohio State, the book and Urban Meyer's leadership style is relateable to everyone, no matter your position, even if you think you lead no one. The takeaways are numerous. I've given away a copy or two and also recommended it to many more.

Another aspect I liked about this book was Meyer's willingness to talk about his personal failings while at Florida and the role of faith in his life. If you are looking for another book that details leadership and motivation strategies from Meyer and many other legends of coaching, Championship Performance Coaching is one to check out.

Patricia Leavy, PhD, is an independent sociologist and former Chair of Sociology and Criminology and Founding Director of Gender Studies at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. She is the author, coauthor, or editor of over 25 books, and the creator and editor of seven book series. Known for her commitment to public scholarship, she is frequently contacted by the U.S. national news media and has regular blogs for The Huffington Post,The Creativity Post, and We Are the Real Deal. She is also co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of the journal Art/Research International. Dr. Leavy has received numerous awards for her work in the field of research methods, including the Distinguished Service Outside the Profession Award from the National Art Education Association, the New England Sociologist of the Year Award from the New England Sociological Association, the Special Achievement Award from the American Creativity Association, the Egon Guba Memorial Keynote Lecture Award from the American Educational Research Association Qualitative Special Interest Group, and the Special Career Award from the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry.
