I needed a good review of gardening. It has been a number of years since I have had a garden and I now live in desert which is entirely different than I have done before. I found this little book so helpful as to how and when to plant. But more important to me was companion planting. I don't get around to spraying and he tells you what to plant among you potatoes that will get rid of most of the critters you might acquire. He tells you about the soil and the different kind of potatoes.
I've decided to grow potatoes in my garden for the first time and got this book to help me get started. I heard about great success of growing potatoes in a bag, but this book did not cover this topic in any detail just mentioned building a potato box which has a bit of similarity to growing potatoes in a grow bag. I was able to find tips on growing potatoes in a bag by searching the internet.Even though I did not find information about my specific interest, I found some helpful information in the book. The Chapter 1 talks about benefits and cost savings of growing potatoes and I did not find it very interesting. Starting with Chapter 2 I found the book it became more interesting. Chapter 2 talks about the different variety of potatoes describing the taste and what works well for home growing. It also provides info on where to buy seed potatoes on line where you can find more varieties then in local stores. I investigated this option but the price turned out to be so much higher (mostly due to shipping costs) than local Agway that I decided to buy my seed potatos locally. However, I printed and brought with me several charts from the web sites which described the taste and the grow cycles of the potatoes. Agway did not have that information and these lists helped me select what I wanted.Ali Julia review
More of a pamphlet than a book, Ruppenthal's offering totals only 25 pages of actual text. OK, so it's short. It gets worse though as the printed letters must be no higher than a sixteenth of an inch and the short text is practically unreadable. As for information the author states that digging a potato bed is "hard work." I guess that's helpful to know, excuse the sarcasm. And, finally there are no page numbers. No page numbers gives a clue as to the effort that went into the pamphlet. For the six or eight dollars or whatever the cost is, the prospective buyer would be well advised to look at other publications.
I love to grow my own stuff but seldom does the output match the blood sweat and tears so to speak! I have had a lot of people tell me a lot of stupid advice about how they grow such splendid looking crops, but it never works for me. Makes me think that I am a subject of a fool's fool. I live in Florida and I understand all the proclivites of what you can and cannot grow in this climate, but I figure that the heartiest of all crops being a root crop couldn't be that hard to grow. WRONG!So I purchased this ebook version of growing potatoes because ... well, who doesn't love them? Found out a lot of helpful things about raising potatoes, but what made my success a reality was finding out which variety grows well in Florida and how ridiculously easy it was to grow these little red gems! Also what types of soil preparations and how to organically control various garden pests and a whole lot more. Thankfully there are such books like this around to help people like me who want to optimize and understand how to grow certain veggies. This author was very good and engaging when talking potatoes. Everything you ever wanted to know about potatoes. Now if I can find an author who writes the same way about raising other vegetables!
I wish I had read this book earlier in the year and got started with a potato crop so I could have plenty of potatoes throughout the year. This is a well written book with plenty of excellent suggestions for increasing your yield and how to grow potatoes even from your potatoes from the supermarket that have gone seedy. This is better than some of the DIY books that I have seen on Amazon. The pictures are helpful as are the illustrations. One issue that I had with the book is that a couple of the links for some interesting projects are not working. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a sustainable crop that is easy to grow and provide your family with a versatile vegetable. If I don't get a chance to try these suggestions this year next St. Patrick's day I am going to be out there planting my potatoes and looking forward to a great crop throughout the summer and fall. Great job R.J. I am looking forward to reading some of your other books.
Having a pretty good pile of gardening books, I was a bit skeptical that 30 pages could really prepare me to grow potatoes but I very pleasantly surprised. This book is both highly detailed and to the point. Meaning that the author covers exactly the subjects you want to know about and in enough detail that you feel capable of trying, but doesn't detour off track and waste time with the extraneous.
I have grown potatoes for years and, up until recently, had fairly good success....but I still felt like I wasn't getting the harvest that I should. This book is very basic and very reader friendly and gave me some great ideas for my next potato garden....I think this is a GREAT reference book and I will probably buy a hard copy to put in my reference library.
I have been trying to figure out a way to grow more of our own food and I couldn't have found this book at a better time. Spring is just around the corner and I have been wanting to try container gardening. My sister grows her own vegetables in raised beds, but our lawn has an in ground sprinkler system, so that would not be ideal for us, but planting in containers would work. It's great that the author offers suggestions on recommended brands, and includes links right to Amazon. Easy and convenient. Obviously, we haven't used the info in the book yet, but in discussions with my sister, the experienced gardener, I know this information is solid. Highly recommended.
