Ruler and Compass contains a surprising amount of information that prefaces each type of geometric construction. Though I've perused the internet, I've yet to find the quality information and instruction provided in this small volume. Small being the operative word here because Wooden Books have crammed 58 pages of directions and diagrams into a space about 6" x 5". I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if I could because of what is probably the publishers decision in format. Pricing was appropriate though. Otherwise, the book has no equal so deserves the top rating. Topics include Perpendiculars, Squares & Rhombuses, Octagons, Tangents, Means, The Golden Section, Neusis, Spirals; there are 28 chapters along with 2 appendices. Each chapter begins with a few paragraphs with references to pertinent mathematicians and concepts. I find the material more than ample for the purpose of creating unusual geometric figures. There's no escaping learning a bit about the subject of geometry as well.

Excellent book! It's surprising how much of fundamental mathematics traces its origin to the ruler and compass technique. Modern mathematics courses present theories and principle but you never really hear about this aspect of the math. My only wish is that the book would be even longer. For instance there is one illustration early in the book that is provided without explanation that shows a ruler-and-compass drawing which results in the solution for a set of square roots (from 1 to 19 or 20 I believe) - fascinating!

I have to teach a few basic constructions for a state test. I have taught them pretty much the same way for years. I teach them the way I was taught. Then I bought this book. This short book helped me energize my class with some great constructions that are quite simple once you get the notation figured out. My students were thrilled with some of the more complex constructions and I think they walked away with a better understanding of the way constructions work. I also used some of the basic shaped like the hexagon construction to reinforce the associated properties. I have never had so much success keeping the students attentive during these lessons.I have not really investigated other such books, but for me, and for my students, this book served as a great resource. Short - effective - informative. In fact - so small that I can tuck the book, a graph paper notebook and a compass in my backpack and not use up much space. One problem - I did spend quite a bit of time doodling with the book during faculty meetings.

What this book is: An excellent reference of over 170 compass and straight-edge constructions. The directions for each construction are brief but sufficient for somebody familiar with these types of constructions. An excellent resource for teachers. What this book is NOT: I would not recommend this book for students. The book does not teach constructions in the typical sense and would be confusing for a student.PS The constructions go from easy (equilateral triangle) to ridiculously difficult (Fixed aspect ration six-arc oval). If you love constructions then you will love this book!

Cool and detailed (okay, I'm looking at it from my physics/engineering background) but a "little" above the intended 11 year-old audience (i.e. son) that this was targeting. Visually shows step-by-step method of doing all sorts of regular geometrical forms that tickle my fancy but the boy views as unneeded beyond his current advanced math curriculum (he bemoans that the ordinary kids don't have as much homework, which is unfortunately correct.) He does math rather well and does things in his head that I sometimes fail to follow, but just pursuing math for the "fun of it" isn't in his agenda.

Absolutely amazing. This book gives you tools to see the truths of communication that have vanished since the advent of the internet. It seems people (myself included) rationalize based on popularity rather than logic. This book goes along way towards putting the tools of understanding back in our hands.

Great book as it offers the basic formulas for different geometric designs.Love it.

Very tiny font, a magnifying glass maybe necessary. Very abbreviated instructions. Much is the same same material as Euclid, but with even less explanation. No back ground material or discussion. All in all an exercise in minimalism. No references as to the corresponding proposition in Euclid.possible ok for travelling - not detailed enough for serious home study.
