I saved the Tres Leches Cake recipe (pp.104-105) to make for an important event, and today it happened—my hubby’s birthday. The title of the book, The Deceptively Easy Dessert Cookbook includes the term “easy,” which always appeals to me. I’d had Tres Leches cake before from a professional chef, so I was totally intimidated. However, the intro to this recipe explained in simple, confidence-building language that this is a pan cake drenched in a couple of different milks and with a sweetened whipped cream topping. I’d built the task up in my mind to gargantuan heights unattainable by mere mortals such as myself. But, hey, how difficult could a sheet cake be? I was game. This cake needs to be made ahead, which worked out perfectly.I’d prepared the sheet cake and soaked it with the appropriate filling while tomorrow’s birthday boy was at a meeting and chilled it all night in the ‘fridge. When he and the dog were out for their morning walk, I made the whipped cream topping and stuck it in the back of the refrigerator; Author Robin Donovan said to wait to put the topping on until just before serving it. Miraculously, hubby went through the entire day without a clue about what awaited him. After this evening’s dinner salad (I knew to make a light meal—I knew what awaited us), I got the cake out, topped two pieces with the sweetened whipped cream, and planted a few red raspberries on top for color and flavor, which was the only way I varied this recipe. Was it a hit? OMG, yes! We shared pieces with several neighbors and still have enough for tomorrow. This recipe would be a favorite at whatever function it ends up at. Next time, invite it along to your next shared meal. Everyone will be glad you did.Up next: Homemade caramels (p. 144) sound amazing, but so do a lot of other recipes.The publisher kindly furnished me with an examination copy of The Deceptively Easy Dessert Cookbook. I also thought there was too much magic and hocus pocus to the story (looking into bath bubbles who acted as crystal balls to reveal the future, etc.) I thought it could have been more enjoyable, realistic and resulted in more honesty making the sincere connection over a deeplife change without that "magic reading the future aspect", however it did succeed in at last getting to an opening for a heart to heart talk between the parent (or caregiver) and child. The book has nice illustrations and an excellent final page of questions the child may have.

I'm neither a professional psychologist nor a specialist in divorce; but, having been divorced myself with two young children, I can say that I dearly wish this book had been published five years ago when we needed it. There is simply no other book like it available; and, with its beautiful picture and kind, welcoming story, all young children will open up to reading it with their parents. And, once they start reading, the issues and topics it evokes will allow children and parents to discuss the things that are upsetting to children during divorce.

The background story was not based on reality (bunnies traveling sliding on rainbows and other random magical things happening) which was disorienting and confusing at times, however I thought the way the topic of divorce was addressed was good. Overall I felt the story was not what I was hoping for.

Story is tooo long and wordy.. tried reading it to my children after our divorce conversation it was a disaster.. it won’t hold the attention of kids under 8

Both her parents are there to answer these tough questions for their beloved daughter in terms that she can understand soothing her confused, worried mind and heart and easing that ever present sick feeling in her tummy.The book is a wonderful resource for any adult who is involved with a child going through such a traumatic experience in her life. The author has included a very helpful guide for the grown-ups as the book is introduced, and 20 questions at the back of the book for both adult and child to discuss together.This book is is highly recommended and would be a perfect resource for any therapist, parent, teacher, and all others working to aid children through this very difficult period in their lives.

First experience reading Steven Suttie, and much enjoyed the experience. The characters are quite believable and well-developed, and they are nearly universally likable. The plot device is fresh, possibly unique - low income housing residents moved into higher-income residential area, and conflicts that ensue.Enjoying the plucky nature of the principal characters, the reader is caught trying to apply the brakes to the oncoming freight train that looms down the track. One off-putting side note - Suttie for some reason found it necessary to give a bit too much away with one sentence forewarnings at or near the end of some chapters. Those foreshadows are too blunt and not really needed to anticipate plot developmentThe seemingly radical character shift at the book end was disappointing for readers hoping for a rosy sunset and happy ending, but c'est la vie.Good read, good characters, and well crafted.

Book one left us with a police officer who had principles and care for his community. He did his level best to "do right" by all involved. He used his brains and cunning to achieve this. Book 2 gives us a DCI Miller who goes after the case in the laziest way possible. He allows himself to be outsmarted by idiots. Then to compound this, he helps the machine which is supposed to be Justice drive over and crush Innocents.Very dissapointed to see a hero for justice fall so horrifically without any reason given for the change. What could have been a great story destroyed by lazy policing and a cop out of an ending!

This book was very intriguing. I couldn't stop reading it I just had to know the ending. The police procedure was good. The caricatures were all very believable. I was shocked at the ending, really didn't expect that. If you looking for something completely different this book is for you

Wow, what a great read. An amazing storyline. A great first half followed by a compelling second. More twists and turns than a don't know what! Great characters and great police work by DCI Miller.

What happens when Social Services places indigent families In a posh in Manchester, UK, chaos follows, but not in the way you would think.This a fun read, even though the end is not wonderful.

This is book 2 of this DCI Miller series and I loved it, can't wait for more from this author.

And with a plot and setting that revolve around dance and a main character whose skill lies in the movement of her body, this story sets itself apart.While there were a few scenes that felt a bit unnecessary to the plot and the story could have benefited from more character development for some of the secondary characters, they didn't detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the story. The pacing was fairly consistent throughout, building as the story neared its conclusion, which made for a very quick and easy one-sit read.And while the main character, Vanessa Adler, wasn't a particularly strong heroine, her character felt very realistic. She was a ballerina. She was a student. She was sometimes fragile. Sometimes silly. Sometimes brave. And she was a girl who put her feelings for her sister above all else.As this is the first book in a series, more of the backstory is likely to be included in the subsequent books in the series along with further development of those characters that remain. And while the story doesn't end on a cliffhanger, there are a number of questions left unanswered and loose ends to be tied up in future books.DANCE OF SHADOWS offers readers a wonderful distraction from reality as the story brings them into this dark and deadly world of dance and its malevolent power.

I fell for the cover and for the synopsis of Dance of Shadows and I really, really, really wanted it to be as amazing as its packaging indicated it would be, but alas, no such luck.First of all, let's take a minute to realise the main character's, Vanessa, love interest's name is Zeppelin. Keep in mind he's a dark-haired hunk with swelling biceps, not a Hindenburg-like airship. That is dumb. People do not name other people after airships. Second, their relationship doesn't feel natural or believable, it feels like something is deeply wrong with it. Sometimes Vanessa and Zep would have fights and on the next day were back to grinding against each other like mad dogs, as if nothing had happened at all. Before even talking to each other, he left her creepy notes telling her she "shined in every way", and Vanessa would almost tear her hair out whenever Zeppelin was with his girlfriend. That when she wasn't busy planning all her dates with a guy she saw once. What?There's also how Vanessa refuses to listen to Justin (blonde-haired hunk with swelling biceps, also not an airship) every single time he tries to warn her about something. It's basically as if someone you knew kept telling you "Hey, can we talk? I really have some important information that might help save your sorry butt", and you just did the whole dismissive wave thing at him and went "Nah, that can wait."The writing was fair to middling, some nice metaphors and pretty descriptions filling in here and there, but sometimes scenes would make absolutely no sense. In one scene, Vanessa is sitting while everyone gets up to leave, as she should, as well. Her friend is beside her, but she's momentarily distracted by something. When Vanessa turns back, everyone is gone. It wasn't like she was entranced for dozens of seconds as people queued out of the room. Vanessa was distracted for one measly second and suddenly everyone's disappeared. Again, what?I also felt like the reveal could have been worked at a little better. I get what Yelena Black was trying to do, but it felt rather rushed and honestly, not scary at all. In the end, I guess i just expected way more. I probably won't pick up the sequel, and Dance of Shadows wasn't nearly shadowy enough for me.
